Perceived overqualification (POQ) has traditionally been seen as an undesirable employment situation associated with negative outcomes. However, recent research suggests that POQ may have positive implications for both employees and organizations. Despite the growing literature on this topic, scholars have offered numerous explanatory mechanisms for linking POQ with its work outcomes, and inconsistent findings have been reported, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of why, where, and for whom POQ is beneficial or detrimental. In the present study, we developed an integrative theoretical framework that depicts the consequences, mechanisms, and moderators of POQ. We then conducted a meta-analytical review of the POQ literature, analyzing 704 effect sizes from 251 independent samples (N = 87,229). By organizing the dominant mechanisms in POQ research within a unified framework of work motivation, we elucidate the distinct pathways by which POQ induces differential work consequences. We further consider the role of key cultural, economic, sociodemographic, and methodological characteristics as boundary conditions. Overall, our findings provide support for our predictions and provide novel insights into the work-related consequences of POQ. Theoretical and practical implications of our findings are thoroughly discussed.

Capable Fish or Deficient Ponds? A Meta-Analysis of Consequences, Mechanisms, and Moderators of Perceived Overqualification

PurposeDrawing on appraisal theory of emotion, this study aims to establish and test a moderated mediation model underlying the process of exploitative leadership by investigating the mediating role of job anxiety and the moderating role of psychological entitlement.Design/methodology/approachWe collected two-wave questionnaire data from 355 supervisors with matched responses from 1,065 subordinates in Hubei province of China. Hierarchical multiple regression and PROCESS macro were applied to test our hypotheses.FindingsThe results indicated that supervisor perceived overqualification prompted supervisor job anxiety, which then led to raised exploitative leadership. Additionally, we found that supervisor psychological entitlement intensified the direct effect of supervisor perceived overqualification on supervisor job anxiety as well as the indirect effect of supervisor perceived overqualification on exploitative leadership through supervisor job anxiety.Originality/valueAlthough researchers have documented a growing number of consequences of exploitative leadership, less focus has been placed on its antecedents. The study extends our understanding of why, how and when supervisors engage in exploitative behaviors.

Amaç: Çalışmanın temel amacı, aşırı nitelikli çalışanların performanslarının artırılmasının nasıl sağlanacağını ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda psikolojik sağlamlığın aşırı niteliklilik algısı olan çalışanların performanslarının artması yönünde aracılık rolünü test eden bir model geliştirilmiştir. 
Yöntem: Araştırma örneklemini 331 kamu ve özel sektör çalışanı oluşturmaktadır. Nicel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada veriler anket tekniği kullanılarak elektronik ortamda (Google form aracılığıyla) evrene ulaştırılmıştır. Kolayda örnekleme yöntemi tercih edilmiştir. Mevcut araştırmanın tanımlayıcı (betimleyici) istatistiklerinin, normallik ve güvenirlik değerlerinin, değişkenler arasındaki ilişkilerinin (Pearson korelasyon) tespit edilmesinde SPSS 22.0 programından yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma modeli ve ölçüm araçlarının geçerliliklerini hesaplamak amacıyla AMOS 24.0 programı aracılığıyla yapısal eşitlik modeli (YEM) ve aracılık rolü (dolaylı etki) analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Aracılık etkisinin anlamlılığına yönelik ise Bootstrap (yeniden örnekleme) güven aralığı değerlerine bakılmıştır. 
Bulgular: Aşırı nitelikli çalışanların performanslarının artırılmasının nasıl sağlanacağını ortaya koymak amacıyla yapılan mevcut araştırmada aşırı nitelikliliğin psikolojik sağlamlığı ve işgören performansını pozitif ve anlamlı yönde etkisi olduğu, ardından psikolojik sağlamlığın işgören performansı üzerinde bir etkiye sahip olduğu bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır. 
Sonuç: Yapılan istatistik analizleri neticesinde, çalışanların aşırı niteliklilik algılarının işgören performansı üzerindeki etkisinde psikolojik sağlamlığın aracı rol üstlendiği saptanmıştır. Bu sonuç doğrultusunda örgütler için genellikle olumsuz bir durum olarak kabul edilen aşırı niteliklilik ve olumlu kabul edilen psikolojik sağlamlığın işgören performansı üzerindeki aşırı niteliklilikten kaynaklanabileceği düşünülen olumsuz etkiyi azaltabileceği düşünülmektedir. Ayrıca bu sonuç aşırı nitelikliliğin olumsuz sonuçlarının önlenebilir olduğunu göstermektedir. 
Özgünlük: Aşırı nitelikliliğin işgören performansını etkileceği ve bu etkinin psikolojik sağlamlık aracılığıyla daha farklı bir yol üzerinden işleyeceği düşünülmektedir. Mevcut araştırma, değişkenler arası bu etkileşimleri ortaya koyma amacından beslenmektedir. Bu nedenle araştırmanın özgün olduğu düşünülmektedir. Bu bağlamda Türkçe yazında aşırı niteliklilik ve işgören performansı arasındaki durumsal etkilerin araştırılmasının önem arz edeceği kanaatine varılmıştır. Ayrıca Türkçe yazında daha önce üç değişkeni (aşırı niteliklilik, psikolojik sağlamlık ve işgören performansı) birlikte inceleyen çalışmaya rastlanılmadığı için, bu çalışmanın yazın açısından özgünlük gösterebileceği ve yazına katkı sunabileceği öngörülmektedir.

Grounding on relative deprivation theory, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived overqualification (POQ) and knowledge hiding. Furthermore, this study investigated the mediating role of job boredom and the moderating effect of job crafting. 

Unveiling the nexus between perceived overqualification and knowledge hiding: Moderated mediation analysis of job crafting and job boredom

Existing research has indicated the direct effect of perceived overqualification on job crafting, but little is known about the underlying mechanisms and processes through which this occurs. Drawing on motivation and capability-based approaches, we proposed and examined how employees’ perception of their overqualification would influence job crafting by increasing workplace anxiety. Furthermore, we employ emotion regulation literature to predict that reappraisal will mitigate the negative effects of workplace anxiety on job crafting. Using a sample of 1,112 workers from China, our findings showed that (1) perceived overqualification was positively associated with job crafting; (2) perceived overqualification was positively associated with workplace anxiety, which in turn reduced job crafting; and (3) reappraisal emotion regulation weakened the detrimental effect of workplace anxiety on job crafting. Based on these findings, we discussed theoretical and practical implications.
