Interest in catalysis by metal nanoparticles (NPs) is increasing dramatically, as reflected by the large number of publications in the last five years. This field, "semi-heterogeneous catalysis", is at the frontier between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, and progress has been made in the efficiency and selectivity of reactions and recovery and recyclability of the catalytic materials. Usually NP catalysts are prepared from a metal salt, a reducing agent, and a stabilizer and are supported on an oxide, charcoal, or a zeolite. Besides the polymers and oxides that used to be employed as standard, innovative stabilizers, media, and supports have appeared, such as dendrimers, specific ligands, ionic liquids, surfactants, membranes, carbon nanotubes, and a variety of oxides. Ligand-free procedures have provided remarkable results with extremely low metal loading. The Review presents the recent developments and the use of NP catalysis in organic synthesis, for example, in hydrogenation and C--C coupling reactions, and the heterogeneous oxidation of CO on gold NPs.

From Dysfunction to Bis-function: Design and Applications of Functionalized Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids continue to find applications in an ever-increasing range of technologies. Here we describe some of the key routes used to prepare ionic liquids and then relate their properties to their applications. In particular, ionic liquids have been used to facilitate crystal growth and, for this reason, are emerging as useful solvents/additives in the preparation of perovskite films. The role of ionic liquids in these films and how they lead to perovskite solar cells with high efficiencies and stabilities is described.

Ionic Liquids: From Synthesis to Applications in Solar Cells.

Two different fluorescent single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were prepd. First by a reaction of oxidized SWNT-K salt with 1,3-bis(9-anthracenylmethyl)imidazolium chloride (bamim)Cl to provide a fluorescent system SWNT-(bamim), via ion exchange and formation of KCl. Second, by phys. mixing of non-functionalized SWNTs with (bamim)Cl salt to provide SWNT/[bamim]Cl in which anthracene units adhere to the walls of the nanotube via π-π stacking interactions. The SWNT-[bamim] material exhibits a partially reversible photodimerization process that was investigated using UV/Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy, and HR-TEM. This study establishes the concept of photoinduced/photoswitchable org.-SWNT conjugated systems based on anthracene dimerization as a prototypical reaction. Hierarchical nanoscale hybrid structures based on the above materials and an understanding of their optical properties may facilitate the construction of SWNT based materials.
