Rice is a widely cultivated crop in China and needs a large quantity of water during its entire growth period. Many water-saving irrigation techniques have been developed and widely applied to conserve water in paddy fi elds in recent years. A controlled and mid-gathering irrigation (CMI) regime is one of them, of which the main feature is to maximize the use of rainwater different from the others. The objective of this study was to assess and verify the water conservation and nitrogen pollution reduction effects of CMI in comparison with a conventional irrigation (CVI) regime. Results showed that the CMI method had potential for water conservation by reducing total irrigation amount and irrigation frequency and making better utilization of rainwater during the rice growth stage. By making use of irrigation water more effi ciently, CMI showed higher irrigation water use effi ciency and rainfall use effi ciency. CMI can also reduce nitrogen pollution emitted to the water system by reducing the pollutant discharge rather than the pollutant concentration during a storm event. However, the irrigation regime’s effect on pollutant loading reduction was not as signifi cant as fertilizer according to experiment results. China, as the world's largest rice producer, is committed to efficient water use in rice production. After nearly 40 years of continuous research and development, studies and investigations, China has developed a series of controlled irrigation technologies and models adapted to local conditions, showing promising results for efficient water use in paddy rice. At the same time, the spread of controlled irrigation technologies at a large scale has achieved the effect of saving water, increasing yield and improving water productivity. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Controlled Irrigation for Paddy Rice in China

In consideration of non-uniform distribution of water resources, insufficient water supply capacity, and day-by-day aggravation of unbalance between water supply and water demand in Jiangsu Province, it is necessary to popularize water-saving irrigation techniques for paddy planting. In this paper, three kinds of water-saving irrigation techniques and the popularization mode of "demonstration in districts-demonstration expansion-popularization in large areas-general popularization" were introduced, and the effect of popularization of the techniques was summarized. Three-year popularization of the techniques from 1998 to 2000 shows that the total area of water-saving irrigation is up to 4.18910~6?hm~2, the volume of water saving is more than 12?480 million m~3, the total output of rice is increased by 2?550 million kg, and the input-output ratio reaches 1103. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of technique popularization in water saving, output increase, and benefit improvement.
