Media performance : mass communication and the public interest / Denis Mcquail

This paper compares the news coverage of HIV/AIDS in China by the Xinhua News Agency of China and the Associated Press of the United States in 2004. By examining the frames embedded in the two news discourses, the study aims at uncovering how the social reality of HIV/AIDS in China is constructed by the two leading news organizations. Findings suggest that an overarching anti-government frame was evident in AP's report whereas Xinhua's coverage has articulated a pro-government frame. Three major frames, i.e. the dishonesty/oppression frame, the human rights abuser frame, and the incompetence frame, have combined to support the anti-government frame in AP's report. Xinhua's pro-government frame is also supported by three distinct frames, i.e. the defense frame, the progress frame, and the ambivalence/ambiguity frame. The Hermeneutics of International Trade Conflicts: U.S. Punitive Trade Policy Towards China and Japan

The Tiananmen crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in 1989 was a decisive event that has provided an enduring prism for the world media to interpret China. This article examines how two of the most preeminent U.S. newspapers—New York Times and Washington Post—editorially invoked Tiananmen as a “news icon” in the past twenty years. We contend that the meanings of Tiananmen were reconstructed over twenty years partly but not completely in line with the changes in the United States’ policy toward China. Specifically, Tiananmen symbolized Communist dictatorship in the initial years after 1989 and then became an example of China’s human rights abuse in the late 1990s. Into the 2000s, the significance of Tiananmen faded away. But it remained as part of United States’ ritualistic memory of China’s repression that invokes the moral bottom line of U.S. foreign policy. Is corruption in China “out of control”? A comparison with the US in historical perspective

This study examined the coverage of China in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times between 1992 and 2001. Across time comparison were made both within and between the two newspapers in terms of total number of stories, media frames used and favourability differences. Findings show that coverage of China has increased significantly over time, but the overall tone remained negative. Stories presented in political frames and ideological frames were more likely to be unfavourable. No significant differences were found between the two newspapers.
