This study was conducted at the apiary of Agricultural and Veterinary Training and Research Station, King Faisal University, Al-Ahsa province, East of Saudi Arabia for two successive years 2012 and 2013 to make a map of nectar and pollen sources in Al-Ahsa province. Throughout the year, we recorded seventy nine sources of bee forage belonging to 24 plant families. Sixty six species were recorded as nectar sources, while the recorded pollen sources were 77 species. Medicago sativa L., Ziziphus spp. and Citrus spp. were the dominant sources of nectar. The yearly average amount of collected pollen was 2.23 kg/colony. The highest amount of trapped pollen loads was obtained during March. The most abundant pollen sources were found to be Cucurbita pepo Thunb (21.10%), followed by Phoenix dactylifera L. (20.25%), Helianthus annuus L. (18.15%), M. sativa L. (17.42%) and Brassica napus L. (17.05%). Beekeepers could trap pollen loads that were collected from these sources during January-May and September-October, February-March, March-August, May-June, and January-March, respectively. It was possible to map the major and minor sources of honeybee flora in Al-Ahsa province throughout the year.

A study on nectar and pollen sources for honeybee, Apis mellifera L. in Al-Ahsa Saudi Arabia

Nectar sources for the African honeybee Apis mellifera adansonii were investigated. The work involved analysis of three honey samples bought from open markets in Lagos, Nigeria. The pollen sediment of the honeys was acetolysed, mounted on slides and pollen types were identified and counted to determine the relative frequency of the different pollen types in the honey samples. The proportion of pollen from each of the honey samples varied from 196 in sample A, 280 in sample B to 238 in sample C. The most abundant taxa identified from the honey samples were Tridax procumbens and Elaeis guineensis belonging to the families Asteraceae and Palmae. The highest proportion of Palm pollen grain was recorded in sample B with one hundred and ten (110) pollen grains per slide. The pollen grains in the families Palmae and Asteraceae are of great importance to the bees for honey production, this can be seen in the abundance displayed in sample B and C. Other pollen taxa recovered belong to the families Mimosaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Sapotaceae and Anacardiaceae providing a clue on the ecological origin of the pollen grains in the honey sample. Pollen analysis of honey proved to be useful in deciphering nectar sources of Apis mellifera adansonii.

Nectar Sources for the Honey Bee (Apis mellifera adansonii) Revealed by Pollen Content

The palynological properties of 8 honey samples commercially produced in 1 region in Croatia (Varazdin County) were determined. Each sample was examined to determine the pollen percentage and pollen spectrum. On the basis of honey pollen analysis, in these 8 samples different botanical origin was determined. In total, 20 different types of pollen grains were identified. The dominant group of pollen grains consisted of Castanea sativa Mill. in samples 2 and 8, Brassica napus L. in samples 4 and 5, and Trifolium pratense L. in samples 6 and 7. The pollen analysis revealed 6 unifloral and 2 multifloral honeys. Analysis was performed using methods in accordance with national and international legislation, in an accredited laboratory.

Pollen analysis of honeys from Varaždin County, Croatia

Pollen analysis of honey samples collected from Coorg district of Karnataka state was undertaken to gather information regarding the bee forage plants and to determine the prevailing bee-plant relationship. In the present investigation, 20 honey samples were collected from Apis cerana and Apis dorsata colonies during January 2010 to April 2011 from bee hives located at 14 locations of Coorg district. A total of 91 pollen types belonging to 42 families were identified. The dominant pollen types were Coffea sp., Cocos nucifera, Aster sp., Scheffleria sp., Syzygium sp., Terminalia sp., Brassica sp., Croton sp., Oryza sativa, etc. Among the pollen types observed, 53.84% were tree species and the most preferred. The highest contribution for nectar and pollen source for honeybee in the study area belonged to the Fabaceae and Asteraceae. This paper discusses the honey plant resources, potentialities for commercial beekeeping in Coorg district and also the importance of honeybees in the forest and agriculture ecosystem.

Eregli, Karapinar, Ayranci ve Ulukisla ilcelerinin farkli lokalitelerindeki 19 bal ureticisinden polen analizi yapmak icin Kasim 2015’de bal ornekleri temin edilmistir. Incelenen orneklerin tumu sekonder ve minor polen grubu icerdigi icin multifloral bal olarak tespit edilmistir. Fabaceae 2 ornekte, Scrophulariaceae 5 ornekte, Helianthus annuus 1 ornekte, Zea mays 1 ornekte dominant polen grubu olarak belirlenmistir. Sekonder polen grubunda ise Amaranthaceae, Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, Rosaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Centaurea , Cistus , Eucalyptus and Linaria taksonlari olusturmustur. Arastirilan bal orneklerinde 55 bitki taksonuna ait polenlerden 21’i familya, 30’u cins, 1’i tribus, 3’u ise tur duzeyinde tespit edilmistir. Toplam polen sayisi 10 gram balda 332 ile 42496 arasinda degisiklik gostermistir. TPS-10 degerine gore, arastirilan bal orneklerinden 3’u normal, digerleri zayif bulunmustur. Arastirilan ballarda; Zea mays , Cistus , Poaceae, Scrophulariaceae ve Amaranthaceae taksonlarinin polen kaynagi, Helianthus annuus and Brassicaceae taksonlarinin nektar kaynagi, Fabaceae, Rosaceae , Eucalyptus ve Centaurea taksonlarinin nektar ve polen kaynagi oldugu belirlenmistir.

This study presents the pollen analyses of 13 floral honeys from the some regions of Turkey. The pollen analyses revealed 1 unifloral honey and 12 multifloral honeys. Pollen have been identified pertaining to 86 taxa, 74 of which were at genus level and 12 were at species level.The dominant group of pollen grains consisted of: Hedera helix, Gossypium, Trifolium, Sophora, Rhododendron, Castanea sativa, Peganum harmala and Helianthus.
