A number of new solid polyiodides of thia- and oxa-zinoquinolinium derivatives have been characterized using a combined approach of Raman spectroscopy and periodic 3D calculations of the Raman intensities. Various cation–anion ratios, including tri- and polyiodides of the complex structure [I3⋯I2]−, have been studied. For the oriented single crystal containing the [I3⋯I2]− fragments, the polarized Raman spectra and the angular dependency of the band intensities on crystal rotation have been obtained. These techniques have allowed us to get new information on the spatial organization of the intermolecular interactions of iodine in polyiodide-anion chains. They have also shown perspectives on the geometrical characterization of complex polyiodides using Raman spectroscopy.

Silver-ion-sconducting solid electrolytes with low activation energy are important because of their distinctive application potential in solid-state batteries operated within a broad temperature range, especially below room temperature. Achieving glassy solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, low activation energy, and good thermal stability is a continuous challenge for the design and synthesis of novel fast ion-conducting glasses. Here, we report markedly low activation energy and high room-temperature ionic conductivity in melt-quenched GeS2–Sb2S3–AgI chalcogenide glasses. Homogeneous 2.5GeS2–27.5Sb2S3–70AgI glass presenting high glass transition temperature of 135 °C shows high ionic conductivity of 9.18 × 10–3 S/cm at 25 °C and low activation energy of 0.07 eV, which is the lowest among those of Ag-ion glassy electrolytes. Optical properties of SbI3 single crystalline platelets

The development of robust methods for determining the concentration and speciation of antimony (Sb) in natural samples is essential to understanding its distribution and cycling in nature. Here we discuss our experiences with a variety of approaches for measuring the content and speciation of Sb in environmental matrices. Total Sb concentration measurements in waters require digestion with HNO3–HCl to release Sb from particulate material and may require a preconcentration step to remove Sb from saline matrices or to obtain the required sensitivity. Plant analyses require the use of HNO3–HBF4 or HNO3–HF while sediments require the use of HNO3–HCl to solubilise Sb and prevent adsorption to silicates. Methods for Sb speciation should be fit for purpose. Volatile Sb species can be measured successfully using SPME-GCMS, waters via hydride generation-trapping ICPMS and sediment extracts using HPLC-ICPMS. Extraction of Sb from sediments and plants presents a challenge; however, the use of citrate is adequate for extraction of Sb from sediments predominately containing Sb associated with Fe–Mn oxyhydroxide phases. We have been unable to successfully quantify organic Sb species in plants because of the oxidation of Sb(III) to Sb(V) and the formation of artefact Sb species. The analysis of solid samples using X-ray absorption spectroscopy should be considered as it has been shown to discriminate between Sb(III) and Sb(V) as well as Sb minerals, oxides and adsorbed Sb species.

Raman spectra of the layered compound, AsI3, are reported for samples at ambient temperature and at pressures up to 8 GPa. Changes in the number of peaks, their frequencies, relative intensities and spectral widths as a function of pressure are briefly described, and evidence for a possible crystallographic phase transition near 1.6 GPa is presented. The two As-I stretching frequencies initially decrease with increasing pressure, as a result of charge-transfer effects, but above 4.5 GPa show the more typical increase with pressure exhibited by all other normal modes.
