Isolation and characterization of nanocrystalline cellulose from sugar palm fibres (Arenga Pinnata)

Natural fiber reinforced polylactic acid composites: A review

The aim of this study was to characterize tensile and thermal properties of sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) fibres obtained from different heights (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 m) of sugar palm tree. This study has confirmed that in a mature sugar palm tree, degradation was occurred and altered the properties of its fibre. Fibres obtained at the area of live (green) palm frond were found to have a better tensile properties as a result of its optimum chemical composition especially cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. For the fibre obtained from the upper part of sugar palm tree, it shows slightly decreasing trend in tensile properties compared to mature fibres. It is due to the fibres are juvenile where their cell walls are progressively built up thus give slightly lower properties than matured fibres. For the fibre obtained from the area of dead palm frond, the fibres are considered to be degraded biologically. It is believed that polymeric chains in microfibrils were broken and their cellulose content was decreased which demonstrated inferior properties (tensile strength, modulus, elongation at break and toughness). The use of such fibre for application as reinforcing fibre in composite is not recommended since the strength of the fibre and composite will be reduced. There were four phases of decomposition of the fibres where the sequence of decomposition started with decomposition of moisture, followed by hemicelluloses, then cellulose and next is lignin while the ash was the last component left. The thermal degradation of these components were found in ranges of 45–123, 210–300, 300–400, 160–900 and 1723 °C, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis and derivative thermogravimetric analysis curves showed that the fibre of 1 m showed higher thermal stability than the fibres of 3–15 m. The different thermal stability for each fibre was due to different chemical compositions especially when the fibre containing high ash content which result in higher thermal stability.

Characterization of sugar palm ( Arenga pinnata ) fibres

In this study, it is shown the attitudes and approaches behind the two important function-specific management system standards developed by International Organization for Standardization, namely quality management system (QMS) based on ISO 9001:2008 and risk management system (RMS) based on ISO 31000:2009, are largely similar and complementary. Also, both these management systems (MSs) are essential elements of organisational performance management system. Thus, as the key result, integration of the above MSs is suggested and a conceptual model to support this integration is introduced. The integration model is called risk-based quality management system. The main driver for such integration are: to reduce the number of MSs in an organisation and hence to decrease the number of resources employed and to enhance the organisation performance as both RMS and QMS are two sides of the same coin. Development of a conceptual model for risk-based quality management system

Purpose




The purpose of this paper is to present the review of natural fibre composites as well as a specific type of fibre, i.e., sugar palm fibre and its composites.




Design/methodology/approach




The approach of this review paper is to present previous work on natural fibres and their composites. Then a review of several important aspects such as history, origin, botanic description, distribution, application and characterisation of sugar palm tree, and its fibre is presented. Finally a review of properties and characterisation of sugar palm composites is presented.




Findings




Findings of this review include the potential application of natural fibres and their composites for engineering application, the use of sugar palm and its fibres, as well as the suitability of sugar palm composites in engineering application after conducting review of their performance and characterisation.




Originality/value




The value of this review is to highlight the potential of natural fibres, natural fibre composites, sugar palm, sugar palm fibres and sugar palm composites as materials for engineering applications.

Current attention to the argument of collaborative procurement has been investigated by both academia and industry practitioners as the concept of group purchasing. This paper first reviews the literature on horizontal collaboration in purchasing task and recognises the interface between purchasing progress and the logistical point of view of supply as the accomplishing task of the procurement cycle. Secondly, it examines the effects of a successful horizontal collaboration in logistics activities among a group of small and medium sized food enterprises (SMEs) which have participated in a purchasing consortium. ‘Homo-regional firms’ are introduced as a logistics concept illustrating the potentiality in establishing horizontal collaboration in logistics activities in order to gain a competitive advantage. Methodology consists of data collection through quantitative questionnaires in direct contact with the firms. The results show a reduction of 10% to 30% in outbound logistics cost in comparison to the time period in which the firms were undergoing procurement by themselves.
