The development of new corrosion inhibitors constitutes a significant endeavor for researchers. In this study, the efficacy of octacalcium phosphate (OCPa), an inorganic green corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in a 3% NaCl solution, was evaluated. This investigation marks the first application of this compound in a saline environment. The phosphate inhibitor was synthesized through a double aqueous decomposition process in an equimolar solution of water and ethanol, and subsequently characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), chemical analysis, and SEM/EDX to ascertain its properties and morphology. Meanwhile, the electrochemical behavior was investigated using techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to assess the anticorrosive performance of the studied phosphates. Analysis of the carbon steel surface morphology of the resultant layer was conducted using SEM/EDX and FTIR. According to the electrochemical results, OCPa demonstrated an impressive inhibitory effect, with an efficiency reaching 93.1% at an optimal concentration of 50 ppm, exhibiting a cathodic type of inhibition. Moreover, the charge transfer resistance was found to be 2450 Ω.cm2 in the presence of 50 ppm of the inhibitor, as compared to 161.0 Ω.cm2 in the uninhibited solution. The thermodynamic parameters indicated an endothermic nature for the adsorption process in the presence of OCPa. Examination of the carbon steel surface morphology by SEM revealed the formation of a protective layer, serving to shield the metal from corrosion. The experimental findings underscore the potential of octacalcium phosphate as a promising inorganic green corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in saline environments, opening new avenues for the exploration and development of environmentally benign anti-corrosive substances. 

Investigation of the Inhibition Behavior of an Octacalcium Phosphate as a Green Corrosion Inhibitor Against Carbon Steel in 3 % NaCl Medium

In the present study, chemical surface treatment was performed on Molybdenum (IV) disulfide (MoS2) nanoparticles with two coupling agents; amino silane ((3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane) and epoxy silane ((3-Glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane), and the effect of these nanoparticle embedment into epoxy coating was evaluated. Chemical structure of the nanoparticles was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirms that 21 wt% of surface-treated MoS2 nanoparticles (MoS2 + AS) is amino silane, but the surface treatment with epoxy silane has not been very effective. The morphology and physical structure of nanoparticles were evaluated by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), which respectively shows that the surface treatment with epoxy silane cannot interfere the agglomeration of MoS2 nanosheets. The exceptional corrosion resistance of the coating containing 2 wt% of MoS2 + AS nanoparticles has been verified using both EIS and salt spray measurements. Furthermore, it is anticipated that this remarkable performance will endure over time, as there was no substantial decline in the corrosion resistance of the coating even after duration of 21 days with a recorded Rp value of 1.19 × 108 Ω·cm2.

In order to control the corrosion rate and enhance the biocompatibility of the AZ31 magnesium alloys, hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings pre-treated and post-treated with Ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and zein were prepared by pre-treatment and post-treatment methods, and then they were compared to each other. The electrochemical test results indicated that the modified coatings have more polarization resistance in contrast with HA coating. Moreover, the treated HA coating with zein prepared by the post-treatment method (Rp = 25375 ohm.cm2), reveals a better anti-corrosion behavior compared with the treated coating with EDTA (Rp = 10160 ohm.cm2) and zein prepared by the pretreatment method (Rp = 20376 ohm.cm2) in NaCl 3.5 wt.% solution. The surface characterization and composition of the coatings were examined by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). FE-SEM results confirm the formation of a polymeric layer of zein on apatite's crystals. In addition, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) tests were performed in a simulated body fluid (SBF) in order to investigate the in vitro properties at specific times, and then the surface morphology of the coatings was also investigated. Immersion tests in SBF showed that the HA coating treated with zein by the post-treatment method significantly increases the corrosion rate due to the presence of the zein polymer film and the hydroxyapatite coating, and after 1 week of exposure to SBF, the protective layer of the zein remained almost unchanged. The viable cell count method was utilized to examine the antibacterial characteristics of the coatings, and a considerable reduction in bacteria growth percentage was observed after 24 hours in the EDTA-HA and HA-zein coatings.
