The field of viscous liquid and glassy solid dynamics is reviewed by a process of posing the key questions that need to be answered, and then providing the best answers available to the authors and their advisors at this time. The subject is divided into four parts, three of them dealing with behavior in different domains of temperature with respect to the glass transition temperature, Tg , and a fourth dealing with ‘‘short time processes.’’ The first part tackles the high temperature regime T.Tg ,i n which the system is ergodic and the evolution of the viscous liquid toward the condition at Tg is in focus. The second part deals with the regime T;Tg , where the system is nonergodic except for very long annealing times, hence has time-dependent properties ~aging and annealing!. The third part discusses behavior when the system is completely frozen with respect to the primary relaxation process but in which secondary processes, particularly those responsible for ‘‘superionic’’ conductivity, and dopart mobility in amorphous silicon, remain active. In the fourth part we focus on the behavior of the system at the crossover between the low frequency vibrational components of the molecular motion and its high frequency relaxational components, paying particular attention to very recent developments in the short time dielectric response and the high Q mechanical response. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.@S0021-8979~00!02213-1#

Relaxation in glassforming liquids and amorphous solids

Natural fibers are emerging as low cost, lightweight and apparently environmentally superior alternatives to glass fibers in composites. We review select comparative life cycle assessment studies of natural fiber and glass fiber composites, and identify key drivers of their relative environmental performance. Natural fiber composites are likely to be environmentally superior to glass fiber composites in most cases for the following reasons: (1) natural fiber production has lower environmental impacts compared to glass fiber production; (2) natural fiber composites have higher fiber content for equivalent performance, reducing more polluting base polymer content; (3) the light-weight natural fiber composites improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions in the use phase of the component, especially in auto applications; and (4) end of life incineration of natural fibers results in recovered energy and carbon credits.

Among the main challenges of our century, the climate change and the need of diversification of the energy sources are of most importance. Renewable energies undoubtedly have an important role to play, photovoltaic (PV) electricity being especially well suited to face these energy challenges. However, the current integration of PV panels often comes without architectural consideration. In this context, the Archinsolar project [1] aims to develop a new generation of photovoltaic elements based on silicon thin films technologies (amorphous and micromorph), ultra-reliable and manufacturable at a very low cost, allowing a unique architectural integration, respectful of the bui lt environment and overall landscape. Here we will present our new developments on innovative PV elements including colored PV panels and a solar tile using a composite back-structure.

Innovative Solution for Building Integrated Photovoltaics

Failure mechanics of thin coatings under multiaxial loading

The functional performance of nanosized oxide and nitride films on polymer substrates is dictated by the fracture properties of these extremely thin and brittle films, controlled by a complex interplay between process induced defects and residual film stresses, cohesive film properties and adhesion to the substrate (Figure 1) [1]. Successful design and process optimization of such composite materials relies on accurate analysis of the properties of the interfacial region, and, more specifically, of the stress transfer features of the interface. Stress transfer theories were developed in the 1950s, parallel to the development of adhesion tests. Since these early efforts, a broad diversity of models and test methods have emerged, but only a few are applicable in case of strong elastic contrast between coating and substrate, germane to stiff coatings on soft polymer substrates.

Mechanical integrity of thin films on polymer substrates

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have attracted increasing attention over the last few years owing to their
outstanding properties, e.g. their large actuation strains, high energy density, and pliability, which have opened up a wide
spectrum of potential applications in fields ranging from microengineering to medical prosthetics. There is consequently
a huge demand for new elastomer materials with improved properties to enhance the performance of DEAs and to
overcome the limitations associated with currently available materials, such as the need for high activation voltages and
the poor long-term stability. The electrostatic pressure that activates dielectric elastomers can be increased by higher
permittivity of the elastomer and thus may lead to lower activation voltages. This has led us to consider composite
elastomeric dielectrics based on thermoplastic elastomers or PDMS, and conductive polyaniline or ceramic (soft doped
PZT) powder fillers. The potential of such materials and strategies to counter the adverse effects of increased
conductivity and elastic modulus are discussed.
