Humanity already possesses the fundamental scientific, technical, and industrial know-how to solve the carbon and climate problem for the next half-century. A portfolio of technologies now exists to meet the world's energy needs over the next 50 years and limit atmospheric CO2 to a trajectory that avoids a doubling of the preindustrial concentration. Every element in this portfolio has passed beyond the laboratory bench and demonstration project; many are already implemented somewhere at full industrial scale. Although no element is a credible candidate for doing the entire job (or even half the job) by itself, the portfolio as a whole is large enough that not every element has to be used.

The efficiency and versatility of catalysts in the multi-step reaction of carbonates with carbon dioxide (CO2) as raw material are barely satisfactory. Herein, ternary copolymerized bifunctional poly(ionic liquid)s (TBPILs) rich in hydroxyls, halogen anions and tertiary N were fabricated via free radical copolymerization. Due to the ingenious modification of tertiary N in the polymeric framework to form multi-site activation with hydroxyls and halogen anions, the specific activity of TBPILs reached to 17.87 mmolSC m−2catal h−1 in CO2 cycloaddition reaction. Meanwhile, for the transesterification reaction of cyclic carbonates with methanol, by the introduction of tertiary N, the yield of dimethyl carbonate increased from trace to 80.31 % in the absence of any solvent or co-catalyst. Density functional theory calculations, combined with electrostatic potential and average local ionization energy analyses confirmed the dual roles of tertiary N in the formation of carbonates by CO2. This work provides an originality idea to design high-efficiency catalysts for CO2 insertion into carbonates, and study the effects of basic sites on CO2 conversion.

Insight into the reversible behavior of Lewis–Brønsted basic poly(ionic liquid)s in one-pot two-step chemical fixation of CO2 to linear carbonates

Nitrogen-doped microporous carbon using carboxylic acid-functionalized imidazole-type polymers (PDVA) as a carbon precursor was fabricated by a one-step carbonization method without an additional activator. The introduction of acrylic acid was beneficial to promote the formation of microporous structures during the pyrolysis process. By changing the carbonization temperature, the textural properties and surface nitrogen content of the carbon materials were tuned. The synergistic effect of the microporous structure and basic nitrogen sites was conducive to enhancing the CO₂ adsorption performance of porous carbon materials. The CO₂ adsorption quantity of PDVA-C-800 obtained without an additional activator reached 3.18 mmol·g–¹ under 1 bar at 25 °C, which was comparable to that of the reported carbon materials. Besides, PDVA-C-800 possessed excellent cycle stability and recyclability. The fabrication of microporous nitrogen-doped carbon derived from carboxylic acid-functionalized imidazole-type polymers provided an original idea for CO₂ uptake.
