With this supply, the volume of the solution vessel (4) is reduced and the capacity of the reaction chamber (2) is increased. Thus, the region where hydrogen is generated is increased in a small space.

The invention is a hydrogen generator (10) with a liquid reservoir (24), a reaction area (22), a byproduct containment area (26) and a hydrogen containment area (28) within a housing (12). A liquid from the liquid reservoir can react within the reaction area to produce hydrogen gas and byproducts, which flow to the byproduct containment area, and hydrogen gas passes into the hydrogen containment area (28) and is released from the housing through a hydrogen outlet (38) as needed. The liquid reservoir and the reaction area are each within a container (18,20) made of a liquid impermeable material, the byproduct containment area is within a flexible container (16) made of a hydrogen permeable, liquid impermeable material, and the hydrogen containment area is within a flexible container (14) made of a hydrogen impermeable material. The byproduct containment area is in a volume exchanging relationship with one or both of the liquid reservoir and the reaction area.

SOLUTION: A first cartridge 10 where the hydrogen generating agent generating hydrogen gas by reacting with a reaction liquid is stored in respective storing chambers 11 which are partitioned into a plurality of storing chambers 11 and a second cartridge 20 which is freely attachable to and detachable from the first cartridge 10 and in which the required amount of the reaction liquid to react with the hydrogen generating agent stored in a storing chamber 11A is stored are provided. When the second cartridge 20 is attached to the first cartridge 10, a connecting means where the reaction liquid in the second cartridge 20 can be supplied to the storing chamber 11A, a step to take a reaction product to a second cartridge 20 side and a step to detach together the second cartridge 20 and the reaction product after the reaction liquid is consumed are provided. After detachment, a connecting means where the reaction liquid in a newly attached second cartridge 20 can be supplied to one of remaining storing chambers 11B and 11C is provided. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen generation method and a hydrogen generation device where, when water is fed to a metal hydrogen complex compound such as tetrahydroborate, the time required until a prescribed amount of hydrogen is generated after the start of the feed of water is shortened, and to provide a fuel cell system utilizing hydrogen generated by the method and device. SOLUTION: An aqueous solution in which a metal salt as a catalyst precursor such as cobalt chloride is dissolved into a solid metal hydrogen complex compound such as sodium borohydride is fed, and gaseous hydrogen is generated by hydrolysis reaction between the sodium borohydride and water. Since the quantity of the generated heat by the reduction reaction between the aqueous solution and sodium borohydride is added to the reaction system, the temperature is swiftly elevated to a critical temperature at which the generation of the hydrogen is promoted. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply control progress of a hydrogen generation reaction of a hydrogen generating apparatus mounted to a fuel cell system and using an alkaline aqueous solution containing a metal-hydrogen complex compound. SOLUTION: This hydrogen generating apparatus is so structured that an aqueous solution storage part for storing the aqueous solution containing the metal-hydrogen complex compound, and a catalyst storage part for storing catalyst coming into contact with the alkaline aqueous solution to generate hydrogen are formed by partitioning them; a state for generating hydrogen by bringing the alkaline aqueous solution into contact with the catalyst is changed over to a state for separating the alkaline aqueous solution from the catalyst and vice versa by using a switch means; and generated hydrogen is exhausted from a hydrogen discharge port to supply it to, for instance, a fuel cell. In this case, control of the hydrogen generation can simply be carried out so that, for instance, hydrogen gas is generated in line with timing at which a hydrogen supply destination needs hydrogen, and hydrogen gas is prevented from being generated in other timing.
