This paper proposes a robust ground settlement prediction framework that can cope with class imbalance and multi-source uncertainties within the practice of deep excavation. There are two main stages incorporated to achieve a reliable risk perception with high accuracy. The first stage involves the application of the Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) under a statistical learning process (SLP) for detecting settlement occurrences. The second stage utilizes the Least Square Support Vector Regression (LSSVR) under the coupled simulated annealing (CSA) optimizer to predict settlement evolution. It is followed by the construction of prediction intervals and a global sensitivity analysis (GSA) to facilitate deeper investigation. A real deep excavation project as part of Shanghai Metro is used as a case study to validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, yielding high prediction accuracy in ground settlement prediction. Moreover, the prediction results can be expressed by two types of high-quality intervals as a promising description of uncertainties attributed to the intelligent model and collected data. Overall, the proposed two-stage LSSVM-based framework offers practical value as a decision-making support tool for stakeholders to understand and control the ground settlement as a reflection of risk status, contributing to enhancements of early risk perception and management in deep excavation engineering.

Interactive behaviors of four closely spaced mega excavations in soft clays: Case study on an excavation group in Shanghai, China

Ground subsidence is a significant safety concern in mining regions, making large-scale subsidence forecasting vital for mine site environmental management. This study proposes a deep learning-based prediction approach to address the challenges posed by the existing prediction methods, such as complicated model parameters or large data requirements. Small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) technology was utilized to collect spatiotemporal ground subsidence data at the Pingshuo mining area from 2019 to 2022, which was then analyzed using the long-short term memory (LSTM) neural network algorithm. Additionally, an attention mechanism was introduced to incorporate temporal dependencies and improve prediction accuracy, leading to the development of the AT-LSTM model. The results demonstrate that the Pingshuo mine area had subsidence rates ranging from −205.89 to −59.70 mm/yr from 2019 to 2022, with subsidence areas mainly located around Jinggong-1 (JG-1) and the three open-pit mines, strongly linked to mining activities, and the subsidence range continuously expanding. The spatial distribution of the AT-LSTM prediction results is basically consistent with the real situation, and the correlation coefficient is more than 0.97. Compared with the LSTM, the AT-LSTM method better captured the fluctuation changes of the time series for fitting, while the model was more sensitive to the mining method of the mine, and had different expressiveness in open-pit and shaft mines. Furthermore, in comparison to existing time-series forecasting methods, the AT-LSTM is effective and practical.

Integrating SBAS-InSAR and AT-LSTM for Time-Series Analysis and Prediction Method of Ground Subsidence in Mining Areas

Building and ground settlement due to construction dewatering is a well-studied topic. However, most previous investigations have not considered the barrier effect of an adjacent underground structure on the drawdowns and resulting settlements. In this study, the barrier effect and its influence during construction dewatering for a metro station foundation pit is investigated. There are five aquifers at the foundation pit site, and a row of buildings supported on pile foundations, which act as an underground barrier to flow, is present on one side of the pit. On the other sides, there are no deep underground structures to impede groundwater flow. Field monitoring of the groundwater level drawdown, diaphragm wall movement, and ground and building settlements on both sides of the pit was carried out during dewatering. The results indicate that on the side with the pile foundations, the groundwater level drawdown, ground settlement, differential settlement, and angular distortion of building incurred by dewatering were relatively greater, but the diaphragm wall movements were relatively smaller. The effect of preexisting barriers should be considered in the assessment of construction dewatering-induced drawdowns, soil settlements, and building movements. 

Ground Behavior due to Dewatering Inside a Foundation Pit Considering the Barrier Effect of Preexisting Building Piles on Aquifer Flow

Hydro-mechanical analysis of a braced foundation pit affected by rainfall and excavation in unsaturated soils

In urban environment, there exist numerous pre-existing underground structures, which act as underground barriers to block the groundwater flow and soil movement, i.e., water-blocking (WB) and soil-blocking (SB) effects, making the responses of groundwater and soil to dewatering different from that without nearby structure. In this study, dewatering inside a foundation pit with a nearby metro station was simulated in a coupled hydro-mechanical numerical model; after validating the model by measured results from a field pumping test, extensive numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the behaviours of groundwater and soil during dewatering under WB and SB effects. Results show that the two effects would induce opposite soil response, either aggravating or restricting the dewatering-induced soil settlement; under the combined actions of the two barrier effects, the soil responses depend on which effect would play a dominant role. When the distance between the metro station and foundation pit (D) is small, the SB effect plays a leading role, restricting the dewatering-induced soil settlement; as D increases, both the SB and WB effects get weakened while SB effect weakens more rapidly; when D surpasses a critical value, the WB effect in turn plays a dominant role, aggravating the dewatering-induced soil settlement. 

Responses of groundwater and soil to dewatering considering the barrier effect of adjacent metro station on multi-aquifers

When an excavation is close to an existing underground structure which exactly penetrates aquifers, the structure would exert water-blocking (WB) and soil-blocking (SB) effects by changing the groundwater seepage and restricting the strata movement. These two barrier effects would make the dewatering-induced behaviours of groundwater and strata be different from the case with no nearby structure. In this study, a typical metro station was selected as an underground barrier, and its barrier effect on the responses of groundwater and strata to dewatering of adjacent large-scale excavations were numerically investigated. Results indicate that regardless of the excavation scale, the overall water yield of the excavation would be reduced by considering the WB effect, while in the meantime, the induced groundwater drawdown would be enlarged, meaning the number of the designed pumping wells could be reduced to achieve the same dewatering effect. The strata behaviour under barrier effect is more complicated, depending on the coupled action of the WB and SB effects; both the excavation width (B) and the distance of station to the excavation (D) could largely affect the intensity of the WB and SB effects, further determining the ground settlement amount (either larger or smaller than that without barrier effect). Designers should consider the barrier effect based on practical D and B to realize the optimal or economic design and meanwhile to prevent the appearance of unexpected large responses of groundwater and strata during dewatering construction.
