A range of stable emulsions of spherical and rod-like conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPN) were synthesized via Suzuki−Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of 9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diboronic acid bis(1,3-propanediol) ester with a number of different dibromoarene monomers in xylene, stabilized in water by the nonionic surfactant, Triton X-102. High molar mass poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PF8), poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PF8BT), poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-4-sec-butylphenyldiphenylamine) (PF8TAA) and poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-bithiophene) (PF8T2) emulsions were obtained, at high overall conjugated polymer concentrations (up to 11,000 ppm), in the presence of the palladium complex, (IPr*)PdCl2(TEA) and base, tetraethylammonium hydroxide, in nitrogen atmosphere at 30 °C after 24–48 h. A review of the migration mechanism of antibiotics during struvite recovery from wastewater

Polyfluorenes with pendant alkoxysilyl groups have been used to prepare inorganic–organic composite nanoparticles (diameter = 80–220 nm) in which the conjugated polymer is dispersed within a silica matrix. Preparation of these nanoparticles is achieved by simultaneous nanoprecipitation of the conjugated polymer and hydrolysis/crosslinking of the alkoxysilyl groups under basic conditions. The composition of the nanocomposites is controlled by addition of an alkoxysilane monomer, tetramethylorthosilicate. The hybrid nanoparticles form highly stable dispersions in water and buffer (pH 9.2). The size of the nanoparticles can be tuned by varying the amount of the alkoxysilane monomer added during the nanoprecipitation process. Increasing the relative amount of alkoxysilane monomer also increases the proportion of polyfluorene chains that adopt the higher energy β-phase conformation within the resultant nanoparticles. Nanoparticles with the highest silica content were found to have increased photoluminescence quantum yields. This work provides a controllable method for optimisation of the photophysical properties of light-emitting conjugated polymer nanoparticles via a simple aqueous processing technique.

Hybrid inorganic–organic composite nanoparticles from crosslinkable polyfluorenes

The supramolecular approach of fluorenol polymers brings about excellent self-assembly behavior to fabricate organogels and superstructured thin films through highly directional noncovalent interactions. To understand the aggregation effects on electronic structures, the packing structures and the UV/vis absorption spectra of oligofluorenols (PFOHn, n = 1/3–8), with and without OC8H17 side chains, were studied experimentally and theoretically in crystal, amorphous solids, and solutions, respectively. For the ground state in vacuum the steric repulsion between two adjacent fluorenol units renders the PFOH oligomers twisted in a helix conformation, while the molecular aggregation favors the appearance of planar π-conjugated structures. In comparison with the crystal packing, the content of planar conformation (with the torsion angle less than 20°) is increased in amorphous solids. Role of Planar Conformations in Aggregation Induced Spectral Shifts of Supermolecular Oligofluorenols in Solutions and Films: A Combined Experimental and MD/TD-DFT Study

In this study, a magnetic biochar-based bismuth tungstate composite photocatalyst was synthesized to investigate the competitive adsorption behaviors of multiple antibiotics, specifically ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TC), as target pollutants in aqueous environments. We aimed to elucidate the mechanism of adsorption-photocatalysis synergy for the removal of multiple antibiotics in water. Our results demonstrated that the composite catalyst exhibited remarkable degradation efficiencies of 92.41% for CIP and 95.34% for TC within the multi-solute system. Additionally, we found that the composite photocatalyst showed preferential adsorption selectivity toward CIP in this multi-solute system. The adsorption process followed a monolayer chemisorption mechanism on the catalyst surface, primarily driven by π–π interactions and surface complexation with functional groups. The photocatalytic reaction relied on the generation of·OH,·O2−, and h+ as the primary active species for degrading TC and CIP. Moreover, we observed that incorporating magnetic properties into the composite enhanced its recovery rate. We hope that these results provide new insights into the removal of various antibiotics from water.

Fluorescent nanoparticles from PEGylated polyfluorenes

The adsorption behaviors of ciprofloxacin (CIP), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, onto goethite (Gt) in the presence of silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (AgNPs and TiO2NPs) were investigated. Results showed that CIP adsorption kinetics in Gt with or without NPs both followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The presence of AgNPs or TiO2NPs inhibited the adsorption of CIP by Gt. The amount of inhibition of CIP sorption due to AgNPs was decreased with an increase of solution pH from 5.0 to 9.0. In contrast, in the presence of TiO2NPs, CIP adsorption by Gt was almost unchanged at pHs of 5.0∼6.5 but was decreased with an increase of pH from 6.5 to 9.0. The mechanisms of AgNPs and TiO2NPs in inhibiting CIP adsorption by Gt were different, which was attributed to citrate coating of AgNPs resulting in competition with CIP for adsorption sites on Gt, while TiO2NPs could compete with Gt for CIP adsorption. Additionally, CIP was adsorbed by Gt or TiO2NPs through a tridentate complex involving the bidentate inner-sphere coordination of the deprotonated carboxylic group and hydrogen bonding through the adjacent carbonyl group on the quinoline ring. These findings advance our understanding of the environmental behavior and fate of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in the presence of NPs.
