A comprehensive review of the promising clean energy carrier: Hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and utilization (HPTSU) technologies

The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is seen as an essential step toward a more sustainable future. Hydrogen is being recognized as a promising renewable energy carrier to address the intermittency issues associated with renewable energy sources. For hydrogen to become the “ideal” low or zero-carbon energy carrier, its storage and transportation shortcomings must be addressed. This paper will provide the current large-scale green hydrogen storage and transportation technologies, including ongoing worldwide projects and policy direction, an assessment of the different storage and transportation methods (compressed hydrogen storage, liquid hydrogen, blending hydrogen into natural gas pipelines, and ammonia as green hydrogen carrier), as well as economic factors that influence the viability of large-scale green hydrogen storage and transportation. The results of our study highlight several significant findings concerning the cost, challenges, and potential advancements in the green hydrogen storage and transportation field. Our analysis demonstrates that the cost associated with storing and transporting green hydrogen is anticipated to decrease over time due to technological advancements and economies of scale being achieved. However, the commercialization of this technology requires addressing challenges related to storage methods, transportation modes, efficiency optimization, and technology adoption. For example, our research highlights the need for thorough technical and economic evaluations of using salt caverns for hydrogen storage. The efficiency of hydrogen storage and transportation utilizing existing infrastructure, such as storage tanks and natural gas pipelines. By elucidating these aspects, our research contributes valuable insights that can guide future endeavors toward achieving a sustainable and economically viable green hydrogen industry.

Indubitably, hydrogen demonstrates sterling properties as an energy carrier and is widely anticipated as the future resource for fuels and chemicals. Herein, an updated assessment of progress recorded on the production, transportation, utilization, and storage of hydrogen is examined. Firstly, the numerous routes for the production of hydrogen from renewable and non-renewable sources are systematically demystified. Subsequently, the transportation framework for hydrogen is discussed. Moreover, the industrial application of hydrogen is elucidated and the existing hydrogen storage systems are chronologically analyzed. From the review of the literature, photocatalytic water splitting technology is the most environmentally benign method available for H2 production. Additionally, underground hydrogen storage in a geologic porous medium offers the largest and most affordable storage capacity for H2 gas. Nonetheless, the compatibility of H2 with reservoir fluid in porous media and other safety concerns has to be adequately understood to avoid preventable losses. Finally, the key research gaps were highlighted and potential areas for future research are proffered.

This review aims to provide an insight into the composite phase change material (CPCM) based battery thermal management system (BTMS), with a focus on the improvement of battery thermal management (BTM) performance using both passive and hybrid BTMS. The mechanism of battery heat generation and temperature effect on batteries are discussed. Challenges of CPCM based BTMS are found to be mainly associated with phase change material (PCM), which has a low thermal conductivity, low form stability, bad mechanical property, and flammability issues for organic PCM. The building of heat conduction paths could effectively increase the thermal conductivity. Discussion on methods addressing this is made, including the incorporation of PCM into porous materials and dispersing thermally conductive nanomaterials within the PCM. The effects of structure/size and surface modification on the thermal conductivity enhancement are analysed. Recent progress in the PCM adsorption into porous materials and melt blending or copolymerizing with polymers have been reviewed. The methods could improve the form stability and increase mechanical property. Formulation of CPCM using flame retardant and inorganic PCMs is found to be promising to address the flammability challenge. Compared with passive cooling, the hybrid BTMS uses active cooling and thus provides a stronger cooling capacity, and the use of CPCM can enhance heat transfer further and provide better temperature uniformity. The review suggests future research focus on developing assembly methods to minimize interfacial thermal resistance, maximising the mechanical property of CPCM, and enhancing the manufacturing readiness of the CPCM based BTMS. • Heat generation mechanisms and temperature effect on LIB introduced. • Challenges of CPCM based BTMS identified and associated solutions reviewed and discussed. • Passive and hybrid BTMS compared based on performance, complexity, and cost. • Insights into further development and commercialisation of CPCM based BTMS provided.
