Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are becoming increasingly popular with the advent of the Internet of things (IoT). Various real-world applications of WSNs such as in smart grids, smart farming and smart health would require a potential deployment of thousands or maybe hundreds of thousands of sensor nodes/actuators. To ensure proper working order and network efficiency of such a network of sensor nodes, an effective WSN management system has to be integrated. However, the inherent challenges of WSNs such as sensor/actuator heterogeneity, application dependency and resource constraints have led to challenges in implementing effective traditional WSN management. This difficulty in management increases as the WSN becomes larger. Software Defined Networking (SDN) provides a promising solution in flexible management WSNs by allowing the separation of the control logic from the sensor nodes/actuators. The advantage with this SDN-based management in WSNs is that it enables centralized control of the entire WSN making it simpler to deploy network-wide management protocols and applications on demand. This paper highlights some of the recent work on traditional WSN management in brief and reviews SDN-based management techniques for WSNs in greater detail while drawing attention to the advantages that SDN brings to traditional WSN management. This paper also investigates open research challenges in coming up with mechanisms for flexible and easier SDN-based WSN configuration and management.

Software Defined Networking for Improved Wireless Sensor Network Management: A Survey

In recent years, Internet of things (IoT) is widely used in various domains. However, the security of the IoT system becomes a challenge. If the IoT system is attacked, a great property loss will happen. In this paper, a denial of service (DoS) attack to an IoT system is shown. The attack tool is Kali Linux, A Denial of Service (DOS) attack is launched by using 3 different methods. The comparison between the 3 DoS attack methods is also given.

A survey on software defined networking enabled smart buildings: Architecture, challenges and use cases

During the last ten years, the progress of the Internet of Things (IoT) has continued unabated and gradually expanded into almost every corner of our daily lives. One very typical use case of IoT is the intelligent building (IB). Along with the remarkable rise of IoT, an increasing number of smart devices will be connected to IB networks, which brings many challenges to current IB network architectures. SDN (Software Defined Networking) is a potential solution to future IB networks, however, there are still few studies on SDN-based IB networks. In this paper, we have proposed a secure SDN framework named as S2Net, offering authentication and key agreement between the central controller and smart devices. In addition, we have designed a secure OpenFlow message issuing protocol for IB networks, it is used to securely exchange messages between the controller and smart devices. Also, these security protocols are evaluated regarding their security and performance. In doing so, we take an important step towards integrating SDN with extant IB networks.

S2Net: A Security Framework for Software Defined Intelligent Building Networks

The Internet of things (IoT) has revolutionized the use of connectivity and has given birth to new transmission technologies to satisfy the requirements of diverse IoT applications. Low powered wide area networks (LPWAN) is one of those transmission technologies, and is becoming exceptionally useful for IoT applications. The nodes use energy-efficient mechanisms for long-range data transmission (10–20 km), lasting in hostile environments for years and making them suitable for IoT applications such as environmental monitoring, automated billing systems, smart homes, smart offices, and patient monitoring. However, LPWAN devices have minimal resources, which makes it challenging to provide promising security to devices and data in the network. In this paper, we discuss the security mechanisms used in current LPWAN technologies along with their vulnerabilities and possible attacks on them. A detailed literature review is conducted on existing solutions on the security of constrained IoT networks similar to LPWAN using different networking frameworks. The reviewed literature is then compared based on various network security measures addressed by them. In addition, the emergence of software defined network (SDN) architecture for security in IoT is explained based on literature. Finally, the applicability of SDN in LPWAN security, its opportunities, and challenges in implementation are discussed.

Security in Low Powered Wide Area Networks: Opportunities for Software Defined Network-Supported Solutions

The networks of intelligent building are usually consist of a great number of smart devices. Since many smart devices only support on-site configuration and upgrade, and communication between devices could be observed and even altered by attackers, efficiency and security are two key concerns in maintaining and managing the devices used in intelligent building networks. In this paper, the authors apply the technology of software defined networking to satisfy the requirement for efficiency in intelligent building networks. More specific, a protocol stack in smart devices that support OpenFlow is designed. In addition, the authors designed the lightweight security mechanism with two foundation protocols and a full protocol that uses the foundation protocols as example. Performance and session key establishment for the security mechanism are also discussed.

Software defined wireless sensor network is an network defined for dynamic and secure control of smart devices. It decouples the data plane and the control plane, allowing administrators to reprogram the smart devices in the network and backbone network devices based on users' varying demands. In this paper, a typical architecture of software defined wireless sensor network is proposed. Continuous time Markov chain and continuous stochastic logic are used for model checking the reliability of this architecture, which lead to several interesting findings.

A Study on the Reliability of Software Defined Wireless Sensor Network

A body area network is a network of small and portable devices around human bodies. It enables a number of interesting applications including elderly healthcare and chronic diseases monitoring. Since body area networks are used to collect sensitive information, they require proper security protections. IEEE Std 802.15.6 is a standard for body area networks, it also provides mechanisms for strong security. In this paper, security association protocols proposed in the standard are reviewed. First of all, several security flaws are found. In addition, we also get some interesting findings from the standpoint of performance and usability.
