We have developed an all-solid-state master-oscillator-power-amplifier system employing Ce:LiCAF, a new degradation-free tunable ultraviolet laser medium pumped by the fourth harmonic of conventional 10-ns Q -switched Nd:YAG lasers. The low- Q , short-cavity Ce:LiCAF master oscillator produced a satellite-free 1-ns pulse under appropriate pumping-fluence control. 18% energy extraction with sufficient gain was achieved in a single-stage, confocal, double-pass amplifier. As a result, 289-nm, 1-ns, 14-mJ pulses were efficiently obtained from this simple laser system.

Summary form only given. Cerium-ion-doped crystals are already known as practical tunable ultraviolet laser media when pumped with the fourth harmonic of an Nd:YAG laser. A 60 mJ output from Ce:LiCAF has already been demonstrated with large Czochralski (CZ)-grown crystals (Marshall et al, 1994; Liu et al, 2001; Shimamura et al, 2000), and if other pumping schemes were available, it would expand the applicability of this laser medium. In this paper, we report finding new cerium ion excitation channels through Ce:LiCAF, Ce:LiSAF, and Ce:LiSCAF crystals, and find that they coincide completely with the transmission edge of each crystal.

New excitation channels of cerium ion for various fluoride crystals Ce/sup 3+/:LiCaAlF/sub 6/ (Ce:LiCAF), Ce/sup 3+/:LiSrAlF/sub 6/ (Ce:LiSAF), and Ce/sup 3+/:LiSr/sub 0.8/Ca/sub 0.2/AlF/sub 6/ (Ce:LiSCAF) are observed. These excitation channels coincide with the bandgap of each respective crystal.

Chirped pulse amplification in the ultraviolet region has been demonstrated using the broad-band Ce3+:LiCaAlF6 crystal. A modified bow-tie style four-pass amplifier pumped by 100-mJ, 266-nm pulses from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser delivered 6-mJ, 290-nm pulses. After dispersion compensation, output pulses can be compressed down to 115 fs.
