FTO polymorphisms in oceanic populations
Jun Ohashi,Izumi Naka,Ryosuke Kimura,Kazumi Natsuhara,Taro Yamauchi,Takuro Furusawa,Minato Nakazawa,Yuji Ataka,Jintana Patarapotikul,Pornlada Nuchnoi,Katsushi Tokunaga,Takafumi Ishida,Tsukasa Inaoka,Yasuhiro Matsumura,Ryutaro Ohtsuka +14 more
TL;DR: The study of the FTO polymorphisms has generated no evidence to support the thrifty genotype hypothesis for Oceanic populations, and these variants were in strong linkage disequilibrium.
The Q223R polymorphism in LEPR is associated with obesity in Pacific Islanders
Takuro Furusawa,Izumi Naka,Taro Yamauchi,Kazumi Natsuhara,Ryosuke Kimura,Minato Nakazawa,Takafumi Ishida,Tsukasa Inaoka,Yasuhiro Matsumura,Yuji Ataka,Nao Nishida,Naoyuki Tsuchiya,Ryutaro Ohtsuka,Jun Ohashi +13 more
TL;DR: The results revealed that carriers of the 223Q alleles of LEPR had significantly higher body weight and BMI than non-carriers, suggesting that the LEPR Q223R polymorphism is one of the factors contributing to the high prevalence of obesity in the Pacific Island populations.

Brief communication: mitochondrial DNA variation suggests extensive gene flow from Polynesian ancestors to indigenous Melanesians in the northwestern Bismarck Archipelago
Jun Ohashi,Izumi Naka,Katsushi Tokunaga,Tsukasa Inaoka,Yuji Ataka,Minato Nakazawa,Yasuhiro Matsumura,Ryutaro Ohtsuka +7 more
TL;DR: Analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences revealed that more than 60% of mtDNA sequences in the Balopa Islanders were very similar to those in Tongans, suggesting an extensive gene flow from Polynesian ancestors to indigenous Melanesians.

Molecular polymorphism of ABO blood group gene in Austronesian and non-Austronesian populations in Oceania.
Jun Ohashi,Izumi Naka,Ryutaro Ohtsuka,Tsukasa Inaoka,Yuji Ataka,Minato Nakazawa,Katsushi Tokunaga,Yasuhiro Matsumura +7 more
TL;DR: Polymorphism of the ABO blood group gene was investigated in three populations and results imply that Balopa may be Melanesian descendants of the Lapita people who populated the Bismarck Archipelago.

A functional SNP upstream of the beta-2 adrenergic receptor gene (ADRB2) is associated with obesity in Oceanic populations.
Izumi Naka,Koki Hikami,Kazuhiro Nakayama,Minori Koga,Nao Nishida,Ryosuke Kimura,Takuro Furusawa,Kazumi Natsuhara,Taro Yamauchi,Minato Nakazawa,Yuji Ataka,Takafumi Ishida,Tsukasa Inaoka,Sadahiko Iwamoto,Yasuhiro Matsumura,Ryutaro Ohtsuka,Naoyuki Tsuchiya,Jun Ohashi +17 more
TL;DR: The present results suggest that rs34623097-A, which would lead to lower expression of ADRB2, contributes to the onset of obesity in the Oceanic populations.
