Emotion recognition based on electroencephalography (EEG) is a significant task in the brain-computer interface field. Recently, many deep learning-based emotion recognition methods are demonstrated to outperform traditional methods. However, it remains challenging to extract discriminative features for EEG emotion recognition, and most methods ignore useful information in channel and time. This paper proposes an attention-based convolutional recurrent neural network (ACRNN) to extract more discriminative features from EEG signals and improve the accuracy of emotion recognition. First, the proposed ACRNN adopts a channel-wise attention mechanism to adaptively assign the weights of different channels, and a CNN is employed to extract the spatial information of encoded EEG signals. Then, to explore the temporal information of EEG signals, extended self-attention is integrated into an RNN to recode the importance based on intrinsic similarity in EEG signals. We conducted extensive experiments on the DEAP and DREAMER databases. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ACRNN outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

EEG-based Emotion Recognition via Channel-wise Attention and Self Attention

Emotions are fundamental for human beings and play an important role in human cognition. Emotion is commonly associated with logical decision making, perception, human interaction, and to a certain extent, human intelligence itself. With the growing interest of the research community towards establishing some meaningful "emotional" interactions between humans and computers, the need for reliable and deployable solutions for the identification of human emotional states is required. Recent developments in using electroencephalography (EEG) for emotion recognition have garnered strong interest from the research community as the latest developments in consumer-grade wearable EEG solutions can provide a cheap, portable, and simple solution for identifying emotions. Since the last comprehensive review was conducted back from the years 2009 to 2016, this paper will update on the current progress of emotion recognition using EEG signals from 2016 to 2019. The focus on this state-of-the-art review focuses on the elements of emotion stimuli type and presentation approach, study size, EEG hardware, machine learning classifiers, and classification approach. From this state-of-the-art review, we suggest several future research opportunities including proposing a different approach in presenting the stimuli in the form of virtual reality (VR). To this end, an additional section devoted specifically to reviewing only VR studies within this research domain is presented as the motivation for this proposed new approach using VR as the stimuli presentation device. This review paper is intended to be useful for the research community working on emotion recognition using EEG signals as well as for those who are venturing into this field of research.

EEG-Based Emotion Recognition: A State-of-the-Art Review of Current Trends and Opportunities.

Emotion recognition technology through analyzing the EEG signal is currently an essential concept in Artificial Intelligence and holds great potential in emotional health care, human-computer interaction, multimedia content recommendation, etc. Though there have been several works devoted to reviewing EEG-based emotion recognition, the content of these reviews needs to be updated. In addition, those works are either fragmented in content or only focus on specific techniques adopted in this area but neglect the holistic perspective of the entire technical routes. Hence, in this paper, we review from the perspective of researchers who try to take the first step on this topic. We review the recent representative works in the EEG-based emotion recognition research and provide a tutorial to guide the researchers to start from the beginning. The scientific basis of EEG-based emotion recognition in the psychological and physiological levels is introduced. Further, we categorize these reviewed works into different technical routes and illustrate the theoretical basis and the research motivation, which will help the readers better understand why those techniques are studied and employed. At last, existing challenges and future investigations are also discussed in this paper, which guides the researchers to decide potential future research directions.

EEG Based Emotion Recognition: A Tutorial and Review

Since electroencephalogram (EEG) signals can truly reflect human emotional state, emotion recognition based on EEG has turned into a critical branch in the field of artificial intelligence. Aiming at the disparity of EEG signals in various emotional states, we propose a new deep learning model named three-dimension convolution attention neural network (3DCANN) for EEG emotion recognition in this paper. The 3DCANN model is composed of spatio-temporal feature extraction module and EEG channel attention weight learning module, which can extract the dynamic relation well among multi-channel EEG signals and the internal spatial relation of multi-channel EEG signals during continuous period time. In this model, the spatio-temporal features are fused with the weights of dual attention learning, and the fused features are input into the softmax classifier for emotion classification. In addition, we utilize SJTU Emotion EEG Dataset (SEED) to appraise the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Finally, experimental results display that the 3DCANN method has superior performance over the state-of-the-art models in EEG emotion recognition. 

3DCANN: A Spatio-Temporal Convolution Attention Neural Network for EEG Emotion Recognition

Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal analysis is one of the mostly studied research areas in biomedical signal processing, and machine learning. Emotion recognition through machine intelligence plays critical role in understanding the brain activities as well as in developing decision-making systems. In this research, an automated EEG based emotion recognition method with a novel fractal pattern feature extraction approach is presented. The presented fractal pattern is inspired by Firat University Logo and named fractal Firat pattern (FFP). By using FFP and Tunable Q-factor Wavelet Transform (TQWT) signal decomposition technique, a multilevel feature generator is presented. In the feature selection phase, an improved iterative selector is utilized. The shallow classifiers have been considered to denote the success of the presented TQWT and FFP based feature generation. This model has been tested on emotional EEG signals with 14 channels using linear discriminant (LDA), k-nearest neighborhood (k-NN), support vector machine (SVM). The proposed framework achieved 99.82% with SVM classifier.
