Considering the current global energy crisis and the most alarming environmental pollution issues, moving towards renewable energy resources instead of fossil fuels, should be the ultimate goal of modern civilization. Alternative solar fuel generation by applying heterogenous photocatalysis is one of the major approaches in renewable energy research. After the discovery of the amazing material; graphene and its derivatives, it has become one of the most promising materials for efficient photocatalysis in terms of solar water splitting and CO2 photo-reduction. However, a lot of challenges are still there considering the efficiency, product selectivity, fabrication techniques, etc. Here in, we have discussed the deeper insight into the fundamental aspects of graphene/graphene oxide and their derivatives in terms of structural, electronic, and thermodynamic consideration for the fabrication of new generation photocatalysts. Finally, we have discussed the future directions and strategic insight to overcome the current challenges for sustainable production of solar fuels.

Challenges and Future Prospects of Graphene Based Hybrids for Solar Fuel Generation: Moving Towards the Next Generation Photocatalysts

The assembly of different levels of structure from the nano‐ to the macroscale has produced materials with outstanding performance. Here, using graphene as a model building block, the fabrication of multiscale structures is reported, with tailorable features spanning seven orders of magnitude in size by a 3D printed template‐directed assembly method which combines the ability to customize structures from the meso‐ to macroscale using digital light processing and from the nano‐ to microscale using self‐assembly. It is shown that by a careful design of the structures, a number of extraordinary properties can be produced including ultralow density (≥0.08 mg cm–3), and ultrahigh stiffness, and compressibility (full recovery from 95% strain). The approach not only provides diversified structure control over wide length scales for nanomaterial assembly but also shows the possibility of changing the properties of the structure for different applications.

Graphene, the super material, endlessly demonstrates some of the substantial, as well as desired, mechanical, thermal, optical, and chemical characteristics which are just about to bring about an unprecedented transformation in the science and technology field. Being derived from graphite, graphene is made of one-atom-thick, two-dimensional carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice. This Nobel-prize-winning phenomenon includes properties that may result in a new dawn of technology. Graphene, the European Union’s (EU) largest pledged project, has been extensively researched since its discovery. Several stable procedures have been developed to produce graphene nanoparticles in laboratories worldwide. Consequently, miscellaneous applications and futuristic approaches in artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology, biomedical and nanomedicine, defence and tactics, desalination, and sports are ruling over the next generation’s fast-paced world and are making the existing market competitive and transformative. This review sheds light upon the ideology of the preparation and versatile application of graphene and foretells the upcoming advancements of graphene nanoparticles with the challenges rearing ahead. The study also considers graphene nanoparticles’ diverse fields and portends their sustainability with the possibility of their acceptance in the commercial market as well as in common usage.

Graphene oxide (GO) has demonstrated potential applications in various fields, and attracted intensive attention in industry as well. Numerous companies worldwide have been working on the industrial applications of GO-based materials in, e.g., thermal management, multifunctional composites, anti-corrosion paints, lubricants, energy storage, environment protection and biomedicals. This review presents a short summary on the proceedings of GO towards industrialization, including the large-scale production and some promising applications, by providing views on the processing strategies and challenges specifically for the industrial use of GO. This review would help the scientists in this area to find topics for overcoming challenges together with engineers.
