Continuous years of biodegradable film mulching enhances the soil environment and maize yield sustainability in the dryland of northwest China

The effects of plastic film mulching and straw mulching on licorice root yield and soil organic carbon content in a dryland farming.

Carbon (C): nitrogen (N): phosphorus (P) stoichiometry in terrestrial ecosystems largely determines nutrient cycling in plant-soil-microorganism systems. However, a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of warming on plant-soil-enzyme C-N-P stoichiometry has not been well documented. Here, a global meta-analysis of 603 pairwise observations was conducted to reveal the impacts of experimental warming on C:N:P stoichiometry in plant-soil-microorganism systems across different warming duration (0–5, 5–10, and >10 years), magnitudes (<2 and ≥2 °C), and ecosystem types (cropland, grassland, shrub, and forest). Overall, results show that warming increased soil N:P and vector angle (reflecting the P limitations of soil microbes) by 4.2 % and 2.0 %, but decreased plant shoot N:P and enzyme N:P by 15.1 % and 2.1 %, respectively. The percentage changes of soil N:P and enzymes N:P increased but the vector angle and length (reflecting the C limitations of soil microbes) decreased with warming duration. The soil N:P, vector angle, and length increased but plant shoot N:P decreased with warming magnitudes. Warming increased microbial P limitation but decreased the microbial C limitation in the forest. MAP negatively affected the shoot N:P in areas with a range of 400–800 mm. In conclusion, our results indicated that both plants and microorganisms are more likely to be limited by P than by N under warming. These effects were influenced by warming duration, magnitudes, ecosystem type, and soil depths. The results deepened our understanding of C, N, and P cycling processes in terrestrial ecosystems. Simultaneously, warming duration, magnitudes, ecosystem type, and soil depths should be incorporated into the C and N cycle model under global warming. 

Warming effects on C:N:P stoichiometry and nutrient limitation in terrestrial ecosystems

Reducing plant pathogens could increase crop yields after plastic film mulching.

The widespread adoption of returning crop residue to regulate soil properties and improve yields has been well-established. However, the long-term effects of residue return on soil organic carbon (SOC) and yield in film-mulched farmland, especially under future climate conditions, are still unclear. To address this issue, we utilized the SPACSYS model, which was calibrated with 5-year (2016–2020) field experiment data from various mulching and fertilization treatments in the Hetao irrigation district in northwest China. Furthermore, we investigated the impacts of climate change on SOC storage in 20 cm and maize yield with calibrated SPACSYS model driven by 27 global climate models under two climate scenarios (SSP245 and SSP585) from CMIP6. We considered multiple combinations of agronomic options: five residue return levels (R1: 20%; R2: 40%; R3: 60%; R4: 80%; R5: 100%) and three return depths (D1: surface applied; D2: 10 cm; D3: 20 cm) to evaluate the effects of residue return on SOC storage and yield. We found that yield at a high fertilization rate with transparent film mulching (HT) would increase by 10.1% under SSP245, 15.3% under SSP585 in 2021–2060 compared to the baseline (1981–2020). By contrast, the yield would decrease by 5.8% under SSP245, 21.7% under SSP585 in 2061–2100. SOC storage under HT would decrease by 9.4–12.7% and 18.4–41.4% in 2021–2060 and 2061–2100, respectively. We determined that the optimal treatment involves returning 100% of residue to a depth of 20 cm (R5D3). Under R5D3, yield showed an increasing trend in both two future periods; the SOC storage decreased by 4.8–6.8% in 2021–2060 and increased by 3.9–16.1% in 2061–2100 compared to the baseline under HT. Our results highlight the potential of residue return to increase yield while maintaining soil health when film mulching is adopted. 

Impact of plastic mulching and residue return on maize yield and soil organic carbon storage in irrigated dryland areas under climate change

The response of the carbon (C) cycle to global warming in terrestrial ecosystems is a major issue that must be considered when predicting future climate change. Due to warming simultaneously affects both vegetation and soil, therefore the response of soil organic carbon (SOC) has shown contradictory results in different warming experiments. A 7-year soil warming experiment using plastic film mulching (PM) was conducted with and without plants in a dryland agriculture system to determine the responses of SOC and its fractions to warming. Under different treatments, the δ13C signature and a C model were applied to analyze changes in SOC and its sub-pools: soil heavy-fraction organic C (HFOC) and light-fraction organic C (LFOC). The results showed that PM-induced soil warming controlled the LFOC change and the crop-produced C inputs controlled the HFOC change. The LFOC significantly decreased (p   0.05) impact in HFOC. The C4-sourced C (C4-C) had longer mean residence time (MRT) than C3-C in both LFOC and HFOC, and soil warming reduced MRT of C4-C in LFOC. Soil warming significantly reduced the new C accumulation in LFOC (17.77% lower) and had no effect on new C accumulation in HFOC (1.71% lower); therefore, the crop residue C return ratio is crucial to recover decomposed LFOC and for SOC sustainability in a PM system. Different residue return ratios can alter the SOC change trend, and SOC changes under PM for different residue management should be compared with caution.
