As a new generation of artificial enzymes, nanozymes have the advantages of high catalytic activity, good stability, low cost, and other unique properties of nanomaterials. Due to their wide range of potential applications, they have become an emerging field bridging nanotechnology and biology, attracting researchers in various fields to design and synthesize highly catalytically active nanozymes. However, the thorough understanding of experimental phenomena and the mechanisms beneath practical applications of nanozymes limits their rapid development. Herein, the progress of experimental and computational research of nanozymes on two issues over the past decade is briefly reviewed: (1) experimental development of new nanozymes mimicking different types of enzymes. This covers their structures and applications ranging from biosensing and bioimaging to therapeutics and environmental protection. (2) The catalytic mechanism proposed by experimental and theoretical study. The challenges and future directions of computational research in this field are also discussed.

Integrated nanozymes: facile preparation and biomedical applications

Nanozymes are inorganic nanoparticles that mimic the enzyme-like properties in redox reactions, processing both unique properties of nanomaterials and a catalytic function. Because of high catalytic activity, stability and multifunctionality, nanozyme are of increasingly wide interest in the fields of environmental science and technology. In this article, we review the most recent advances of nanozyme research for environmental pollutant detection and treatment. Nanozymes can be used to detect ions, molecules and organic compounds both qualitatively and quantitatively. They have also been applied for destruction multi-drug resistant bacteria and the degradation of various organic pollutants. Despite the apparent potential of nanozymes in environmental science and technology, current research and application is still limited, and so future challenges and research prospects have been highlighted.

Applications of nanozymes in the environment

Nanozymes, which are functional nanomaterials with enzyme-like characteristics, have emerged as a highly-stable and low-cost alternative to natural enzymes. Apart from overcoming the limitations of natural enzymes (e.g., high cost, low stability or complex production), nanozymes are also equipped with the unique intrinsic properties of nanomaterials such as magnetism, luminescence or near infrared absorbance. Therefore, the development of nanozymes exhibiting additional functions to their catalytic activity has opened up new opportunities and applications within the biomedical field. To highlight the progress in the field, this review summarizes the novel applications of multifunctional nanozymes in various biomedical-related fields ranging from cancer diagnosis, cancer and antibacterial therapy to regenerative medicine. Future challenges and perspectives that may advance nanozyme research are also discussed at the end of the review.

Nanozyme-based pollutant sensing and environmental treatment: Trends, challenges, and perspectives.

Nanozymes merge nanotechnology with biology and provide a lower cost and higher stability options, compared to that of natural enzymes. However, nanozyme catalyzed polymerization under physiological conditions is still a big challenge due to heavy oxygen inhibition. In this study, the simple glucose oxidase system can effectively adjust oxygen concentration and generate hydrogen peroxide, which assists in the realization of nanozyme-catalyzed polymerization. The nanozyme based hydrogel is printable due to its mild preparation with gradually increased viscosity. The antibacterial performance is ascribed to the in situ generated hydroxyl radical via the reaction of the bound nanozyme and glucose.
