Designing nanostructured Si anodes for high energy lithium ion batteries

Materials research has driven the development of modern nano-electronic devices. In particular, research in magnetic thin films has revolutionized the development of spintronic devices1,2 because identifying new magnetic materials is key to better device performance and design. Van der Waals crystals retain their chemical stability and structural integrity down to the monolayer and, being atomically thin, are readily tuned by various kinds of gate modulation3,4. Recent experiments have demonstrated that it is possible to obtain two-dimensional ferromagnetic order in insulating Cr2Ge2Te6 (ref. 5) and CrI3 (ref. 6) at low temperatures. Here we develop a device fabrication technique and isolate monolayers from the layered metallic magnet Fe3GeTe2 to study magnetotransport. We find that the itinerant ferromagnetism persists in Fe3GeTe2 down to the monolayer with an out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The ferromagnetic transition temperature, Tc, is suppressed relative to the bulk Tc of 205 kelvin in pristine Fe3GeTe2 thin flakes. An ionic gate, however, raises Tc to room temperature, much higher than the bulk Tc. The gate-tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism in two-dimensional Fe3GeTe2 opens up opportunities for potential voltage-controlled magnetoelectronics7-11 based on atomically thin van der Waals crystals.

Gate-tunable Room-temperature Ferromagnetism in Two-dimensional Fe 3 GeTe 2

With the advent of flexible electronics, flexible lithium-ion batteries have attracted great attention as a promising power source in the emerging field of flexible and wearable electronic devices such as roll-up displays, touch screens, conformable active radio-frequency identification tags, wearable sensors and implantable medical devices. In this review, we summarize the recent research progress of flexible lithium-ion batteries, with special emphasis on electrode material selectivity and battery structural design. We begin with a brief introduction of flexible lithium-ion batteries and the current development of flexible solid-state electrolytes for applications in this field. This is followed by a detailed overview of the recent progress on flexible electrode materials based on carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon cloth, conductive paper (cellulose), textiles and some other low-dimensional nanostructured materials. Then recently proposed prototypes of flexible cable/wire type, transparent and stretchable lithium-ion batteries are highlighted. The latest advances in the exploration of other flexible battery systems such as lithium–sulfur, Zn–C (MnO2) and sodium-ion batteries, as well as related electrode materials are included. Finally, the prospects and challenges toward the practical uses of flexible lithium-ion batteries in electronic devices are discussed.

Progress in flexible lithium batteries and future prospects

This review paper illustrates the main normal and superconducting state properties of magnesium diboride, a material known since the early 1950s but only recently discovered to be superconductive at a remarkably high critical temperature Tc = 40 K for a binary compound. What makes MgB2 so special? Its high Tc, simple crystal structure, large coherence lengths, high critical current densities and fields, and transparency of grain boundaries to current promise that MgB2 will be a good material for both large-scale applications and electronic devices. During the last seven months, MgB2 has been fabricated in various forms: bulk, single crystals, thin films, tapes and wires. The largest critical current densities, greater than 10 MA cm−2, and critical fields, 40 T, are achieved for thin films. The anisotropy ratio inferred from upper critical field measurements is yet to be resolved as a wide range of values have been reported, γ = 1.2–9. Also, there is no consensus on the existence of a single anisotropic or double energy gap. One central issue is whether or not MgB2 represents a new class of superconductors, which is the tip of an iceberg awaiting to be discovered. To date MgB2 holds the record for the highest Tc among simple binary compounds. However, the discovery of superconductivity in MgB2 revived the interest in non-oxides and initiated a search for superconductivity in related materialss; several compounds have since been announced to be superconductive: TaB2, BeB2.75, C–S composites, and the elemental B under pressure.

Review of the superconducting properties of MgB2

With the development of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs), a variety of civilian missions could be carried out by UGVs. The utilization of UGV in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) has received significant attention in recent year. However, single UGV can’t satisfy the requirement of enormous complex work in civil use. It requires UGV to be grouped as a platoon to complete different mission with different formation and information topology. Therefore, a novel coordination control method is needed to solve the topology switch problem. In this paper, a switchable form of Vehicle-Cloud Bidirectional Leader (VCBDL) topology is proposed. Within this information topology, the formation topology of UGV platoon is formed by following the order of cloud brain and can be switched for different requirement. To obtain stable performance of the platoon in switch process, this paper analyzes the design of the platoon controller. The range of controller gain is obtained through the Lyapunov stability analysis. The above conclusions are verified by the experiments based on a shuttle UGV testbed platoon.

Dynamics control of topology switching for multi-functional unmanned ground vehicle platoon with VCBDL topology

Monolayer titanium carbide nitride (TiCN) and multilayer TiCN reinforced titanium (Ti) are coated on the surface of Ti6Al4V alloy by Filtered Arc Deposition System (FADS). Surface chemical composition has been characterized by an X-ray diffraction (XRD). Wear resistance of TiCN coating and TiCN/Ti coating have been detected by hommel tester T1000. Hardness and deformation mechanisms of the multilayer coatings are investigated using depth-sensing indentation comparison with the monolayer TiCN coatings. Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) are used to identify the fracture modes of the coatings. The TEM image observations show that the inclined crack is the dominant crack in the monolayer TiCN coating while small bending crack is the dominant crack in the multilayer TiCN/Ti coating. The Ti layer with good ductility could efficiently suppress the crack propagation and absorb more indent energy.

Deformation Behavior and Wear Resistance of Hard TiCN and TiCN/Ti Coatings on Ti6Al4V Alloy

In recent years, the demand for dental implants has surged, driven by their high success rates and esthetic advantages. However, accurate prediction of missing teeth for precise digital implant planning remains a challenge due to the intricate nature of dental structures and the variability in tooth loss patterns. This study presents a novel framework for accurate prediction of missing teeth in different patterns, facilitating digital implant planning. The proposed framework begins by estimating point-to-point correspondence among a dataset of dental mesh models reconstructed from CBCT images of healthy subjects. Subsequently, tooth dictionaries are constructed for each tooth type, encoding their position and shape information based on the established point-to-point correspondence. To predict missing teeth in a given dental mesh model, sparse coefficients are learned by sparsely representing adjacent teeth of the missing teeth using the corresponding tooth dictionaries. These coefficients are then applied to the dictionaries of the missing teeth to generate accurate predictions of their positions and shapes. The evaluation results on real subjects shows that our proposed framework achieves an average prediction error of 1.04mm for predictions of single missing tooth and an average prediction error of 1.33mm for the prediction of 14 missing teeth, which demonstrates its capability of accurately predicting missing teeth in various patterns. By accurately predicting missing teeth, dental professionals can improve the planning and placement of dental implants, leading to better esthetic and functional outcomes for patients undergoing dental implant procedures.

Broadband spectrum electrically pumped InP-based superluminescent diodes (SLDs) in continuous-wave (CW) are reported. The optimized active region and high quality of quantum wells are guaranteed for controlling wavelength and acquiring large mode gain. All device spectrums are centered around 2.1 μm and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of widest spectrum is 99 nm. After the optimization of waveguide structure for higher output power, the maximum CW output power is lifted up to 30 mW. This work is of great importance to pave the way for demonstrating compact and efficient light sources based on InP material systems.
