Social media brought new opportunities not only for entertainment and marketing but also for knowledge sharing and learning. This research attempted to examine the effectiveness of social media as an educational tool and its impact on knowledge sharing among college and university students. The study used social cognitive and connective theories to develop a model that examines the influence of personal motivations (such as reputation) and social networking features (such as file sharing and student engagement) on information sharing. The study concluded that social media can promote knowledge sharing and can increase student motivation and performance. The findings suggest that social networking is a valuable method of information dissemination and can be used to encourage student engagement. The article also provides implications, restrictions, and future research directions for using social media in education. This study provides valuable insights for educators and institutions looking to incorporate social media into their teaching and learning strategies.

Social Media Influence on Students’ Knowledge Sharing and Learning: An Empirical Study

A growing body of literature demonstrates that social media usage has witnessed a rapid increase in higher education and is almost ubiquitous among young people. The underlying mechanisms as to how social media usage by university students affects their well-being are unclear. Moreover, current research has produced conflicting evidence concerning the potential effects of social media on individuals' overall well-being with some reporting negative outcomes while others revealing beneficial results.To address the research gap, the present research made an attempt to investigate the crucial role of social media in affecting students' psychological (PWB) and subjective well-being (SWB) by testing the mediating role of self-esteem and online social support and the moderation effect of cyberbullying. The data in the study were obtained from a sample of 1,004 college students (483 females and 521 males, Mage = 23.78, SD = 4.06) enrolled at 135 Chinese universities. AMOS 26.0 and SPSS 26.0 as well as the Process macro were utilized for analyzing data and testing the moderated mediation model.Findings revealed that social media usage by university students was positively associated with their PWB and SWB through self-esteem and online social support, and cyberbullying played a moderating role in the first phase of the mediation process such that the indirect associations were weak with cyberbullying reaching high levels.These findings highlight the importance of discerning the mechanisms moderating the mediated paths linking social media usage by young adults to their PWB and SWB. The results also underline the importance of implementing measures and interventions to alleviate the detrimental impacts of cyberbullying on young adults' PWB and SWB. 

How social media usage affects psychological and subjective well-being: testing a moderated mediation model

Chatbots have arrived in higher education, and professors are trying to make the most of them. Typically, chatbots are used to help students learn academic subjects. In times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, students who were not living with their families during the course, especially international students, were isolated and in critical situations. The student services offices were in constant contact with these students to solve problems, advise them and support them during their stay, within the constraints of confinement and the guidelines dictated by the country at the time. The student services offices were overwhelmed trying to help these students because, although the students' problems were very recurrent, the government guidelines changed from one day to the next. This article proposes the use of a chatbot to provide initial support to students during crisis situations, and facilitate communication between them and the university. The chatbot was tested by more than 160 students and student services staff. The findings support the use of chatbots as a potential tool to facilitate communication with students in emerging emergency situations, and encourage universities to adopt these types of smart tools to be prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to students in times of crisis. 

Chatbot for communicating with university students in emergency situation

PurposeAs the number of social media users continues to rise globally, a heated debate emerges on whether social media use improves or harms mental health, as well as the bidirectional relation between social media use and mental health. Motivated by this, the authors’ study adopts the stressor–strain–outcome model and social compensation hypothesis to disentangle the effect mechanism between social media use and psychological well-being. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue.Design/methodology/approachTo empirically validate the proposed research model, a large-scale two-year longitudinal questionnaire survey on social media use was administered to a valid sample of 6,093 respondents recruited from a university in China. Structural equation modeling was employed for data analysis.FindingsA longitudinal analysis reveals that social media use positively (negatively) impacts psychological well-being through the mediator of nomophobia (perceived social support) in a short period. However, social media use triggers more psychological unease, as well as more life satisfaction from a longitudinal perspective.Originality/valueThis study addresses the bidirectional relation between social media use and psychological unease. The current study also draws both theoretical and practical implications by unmasking the bright–dark duality of social media use on psychological well-being.

Unmasking the bright–dark duality of social media use on psychological well-being: a large-scale longitudinal study

This study explored the usage patterns of short videos and social media (SVSM) among adolescents and their correlation with psychological health. We conceptualized SVSM using a multidimensional construct, including usage duration, number of friends, and emotional and life involvement, as a precursor to mental health. Using a sample of 1263 junior and senior high school students in China, unconditional latent profile analysis (LPA) and conditional LPA with the simultaneous inclusion of demographic covariates and distal outcomes were conducted. Four SVSM usage profiles were identified: low usage (35.6%), general usage (46.2%), high duration (8.4%), and many friends (9.7%). Significant grade and gender differences were found when comparing the profiles. Depression, fear of missing out, core self-evaluation, and life satisfaction differed across the four profiles. Higher depression, fear of missing out and lower core self-evaluation were found in both high duration and many friends, additionally, lower life satisfaction was found in many friends, suggesting a high risk for mental health. These findings highlight the need for parents, educators, clinicians, and researchers to understand the importance of appropriate use of SVSM. Early identification of SVSM use patterns could be an important component of effective strategies to prevent mental health problems in adolescents. 

Usage patterns of short videos and social media among adolescents and psychological health: A latent profile analysis

Understanding connections between social media use and youth's psychosocial adjustment has emerged as a goal to both psychology and communication scholars. Conclusions are presented from a systematic narrative review of 77 qualifying studies conducted between 2000-2016 evaluating the association between social media use and three forms of internalizing behaviors (depression, anxiety, and loneliness) among 10-18 year olds. For each behavior, three questions were addressed: 1) Is there an association (and direction) between social media use and the behavior?; 2) For whom does this association emerge?; 3) What factors account for this association? For depression (36 studies), a positive association between time spent on social media and depression emerges consistently. Gender, popularity, and perceived social support serve as moderators. Specific activities and experiences on social media (e.g., social comparison and feedback-seeking, passive and active use of Facebook, cybervictimization), sleep disturbance, and "FOMO" (fear-of-missing-out) are mediators. For anxiety (15 studies), the relationship with adolescents' social media use is best represented as a positive reciprocal relationship. Gender is a moderator. Mediators include reducing uncertainty about others, concern for privacy, FOMO, and cybervictimization. For loneliness (26 studies), there is a consistent positive relationship between the frequency/intensity of social media use and loneliness; loneliness is often the precursor. Moderators are age, personality, and experiences with social media activity. Mediators are motives for pursuing specific social media activities. Across outcomes, theoretically drive studies assessing why, with whom, and how teens interact online are needed to determine specific consequences of utilizing social media.

International students’ psychosocial well-being and social media use at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic: A latent profile analysis


 Social relational theory proposes that children and parents socialize each other, particularly when knowledge, beliefs, and identities diverge. For families with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) teens, identity-relevant media depictions may spark moments of mutual socialization, including attempts to mediate each other’s viewing and discussions of the teen’s identity. U.S. data from 200 LGBTQ teens (aged 13–18) and one of their parents indicated that 83% of dyads reported that media content had elicited identity-related conversations. Both teens and parents perceived teens to mediate more often than parents, though latent profile analyses suggested distinct dyadic profiles. Although all teens were out to their parent, those with more identity certainty engaged in and received more frequent mediation. For parents, the frequency and positivity of “media moments” were associated with greater support for their teen’s identity. For teens, positivity (but not frequency) of such moments was associated with perceptions of more parental support for their identity.
