The increasing penetration of renewable resources causes some challenges like the electric power demand prediction uncertainty and energy surplus. Energy storage systems (ESS) are promising solutions for these challenges. However, considering the marginal capacity of ESSs according to the installation area and the economic portion of ESSs according to the installation capacity, the use of battery ESSs to reduce surplus energy is not efficient and has practical limitations. To efficiently resolve the challenges, a multi-energy system (MES) that is capable of operating different energy sources, such as natural gas storage (NGS), thermal energy storage (TES), ice energy storage (IES), and hydrogen energy storage (HES) has been proposed. The centerpiece of converting and managing multiple energy sources associated with the MES is the energy hub (EH). In this paper, we reviewed and compared the performance of existing ESSs and the MES, and the results have demonstrated the superiority of the MES. In addition, EHs that include power-to-gas, combined heat power, and combined cooling heat power, have been examined based on their structural characteristics. A review of the methods and the primary purpose of MES is also highlighted in this paper.

Multi Energy System With an Associated Energy Hub: A Review

Modern power systems must provide efficient, reliable, and environmentally responsible energy. Recently, the inclusion of Microgrids (MGs) has allowed us to overcome some difficulties and face important challenges in this direction, especially related to the use of alternative energy sources. Increased and probabilistic demand, as well as limited energy supply, pose the need to evaluate the reliability of any distribution system (DS) when MGs are introduced. Here we reviewed and classified the state-of-the-art of reliability assessment (RA) in MGs. Initially, we contextualize RA in distribution systems. Next, each of the MGs subsystems components are introduced and the questions (1) why is it important to evaluate the reliability in Microgrids? (2) how do Microgrids influence the reliability of distribution systems? and (3) how does each of its subsystems influence the reliability of the Microgrids? are addressed. A total of 1395 research studies were published between 2002 and 2020. Using the PRISMA model, 147 met the inclusion criteria (71% correspond to research papers and 29% to reviews; 62% were published in journals, 34% were conference papers and 4% were books). The first study dates from 1971. Despite immense advances in MGs, we identified that (1) real test systems constitute an emerging trend; (2) although new MG configurations sound promising, the development and application of new RA techniques are a necessary step towards the identification of potential pitfalls of such architectures; (3) new RA methods or variations of the existing ones, whether analytical or simulation-based, are constantly being proposed, but their comparison for a particular DS, including MGs, are yet to be performed; and (4) more research studies are needed to assess how new control strategies and information and communications technology impact MGs reliability. Future lines of research could build upon these gaps to enhance reliability, especially when alternative energy resources are available.

Reliability Evaluation in Distribution Networks with Microgrids: Review and Classification of the Literature

More and more attention has been paid to the development of renewable energy in the world. Microgrids with flexible regulation abilities provide an effective way to solve the problem of renewable energy connected to power grids. In this article, an optimization strategy of a microgrid participating in day-ahead market operations considering demand responses is proposed, where the uncertainties of distributed renewable energy generation, electrical load, and day-ahead market prices are taken into account. The results show that, when the microgrid implements the demand response, the operation cost of the microgrid decreases by 4.17%. Meanwhile, the demand response program can transfer the peak load of the high-price period to the low-price period, which reduces the peak valley difference of the load and stabilizes the load curve. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of three factors is carried out, finding that, with the increase of the demand response adjustable ratio or the maximum capacity of the electrical storage devices, the operation cost of the microgrid decreases, while, with the increase of the demand response cost, the operation cost of the microgrid increases and, finally, tends to the cost without the demand response. The sensitivity analysis reveals that the demand response cost has a reasonable pricing range to maximize the value of the demand response.
