Diffusion, coalescence, and reconstruction of vacancy defects in graphene layers are investigated by tight-binding molecular dynamics (TBMD) simulations and by first principles total energy calculations. It is observed in the TBMD simulations that two single vacancies coalesce into a 5-8-5 double vacancy at the temperature of 3000 K, and it is further reconstructed into a new defect structure, the 555-777 defect, by the Stone-Wales type transformation at higher temperatures. First principles calculations confirm that the 555-777 defect is energetically much more stable than two separated single vacancies, and the energy of the 555-777 defect is also slightly lower than that of the 5-8-5 double vacancy. In TBMD simulation, it is also found that the four single vacancies reconstruct into two collective 555-777 defects which is the unit for the hexagonal haeckelite structure proposed by Terrones et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 1716 (2000)].

Recent Progress on 2D Noble-Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides

Defects are ubiquitous in solids and often introduce new properties that are absent in pristine materials. One of the opportunities offered by these crystal imperfections is an extrinsically induced long-range magnetic ordering1, a long-time subject of theoretical investigations1–3. Intrinsic, two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials4–7 are attracting increasing attention for their unique properties, which include layer-dependent magnetism4 and electric field modulation6. Yet, to induce magnetism into otherwise non-magnetic 2D materials remains a challenge. Here we investigate magneto-transport properties of ultrathin PtSe2 crystals and demonstrate an unexpected magnetism. Our electrical measurements show the existence of either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ground-state orderings that depends on the number of layers in this ultrathin material. The change in the device resistance on the application of a ~25 mT magnetic field is as high as 400 Ω with a magnetoresistance value of 5%. Our first-principles calculations suggest that surface magnetism induced by the presence of Pt vacancies and the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) exchange couplings across ultrathin films of PtSe2 are responsible for the observed layer-dependent magnetism. Given the existence of such unavoidable growth-related vacancies in 2D materials8,9, these findings can expand the range of 2D ferromagnets into materials that would otherwise be overlooked. Magneto-transport measurements on thin metallic crystals of the transition metal dichalcogenide PtSe2 show signatures of ferro- and antiferromagnetic order depending on the number of layers and first-principles calculations suggest Pt vacancies at the surface as a plausible cause.

Defect induced, layer-modulated magnetism in ultrathin metallic PtSe 2

Two-dimensional crystals have emerged as a class of materials that may impact future electronic technologies. Experimentally identifying and characterizing new functional two-dimensional materials is challenging, but also potentially rewarding. Here, we fabricate field-effect transistors based on few-layer black phosphorus crystals with thickness down to a few nanometres. Reliable transistor performance is achieved at room temperature in samples thinner than 7.5 nm, with drain current modulation on the order of 10(5) and well-developed current saturation in the I-V characteristics. The charge-carrier mobility is found to be thickness-dependent, with the highest values up to ∼ 1,000 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) obtained for a thickness of ∼ 10 nm. Our results demonstrate the potential of black phosphorus thin crystals as a new two-dimensional material for applications in nanoelectronic devices.

Black Phosphorus Field-effect Transistors

Platinum diselenide (PtSe2) is a newly discovered 2D material which is of great interest for applications in electronics and catalysis. PtSe2 films were synthesized by thermally-assisted selenization of predeposited platinum films and scanning transmission electron microscopy revealed the crystal structure of these films to be 1T. Raman scattering of these films was studied as a function of film thickness, laser wavelength and laser polarization. Eg and A1g Raman active modes were identified using polarization measurements in the Raman setup. These modes were found to display a clear position and intensity dependence with film thickness, for multiple excitation wavelengths, and their peak positions agree with simulated phonon dispersion curves for PtSe2. These results highlight the practicality of using Raman spectroscopy as a prime characterization technique for newly-synthesized 2D materials.

Raman Characterization of Platinum Diselenide Thin Films

The recent epitaxial growth of monolayer PtSe2 has raised hope for its novel applications in valleytronic, spintronic, and energy-harvesting devices. Compared with 2H-phase transition-metal dichalcogenides, the 1T-phase PtSe2 is much less studied and this is especially true for its defects behaviors and their influence on electronic properties. In this article, we systemically explore the structure, stability, and kinetics of both Pt and Se vacancies in monolayer PtSe2 using first-principles calculations. By examining the relative energies of these vacancies, we identify the most stable Se/Pt single and double vacancies. In particular, we reveal a new type of Se double vacancy structure with the lowest energy. Energetically, both Se and Pt single vacancies prefer to combine to form double vacancies. All Se and Pt vacancies have remarkable influence on the electronic properties.
