Ionogels are promising materials for flexible electronics due to their continuous conductive phase, high thermal and chemical stability. However, a large amount of ionic liquid is required to get high conductivity, resulting in a sharp decline in the mechanical properties. Therefore, it is a great challenge to prepare ionogels with both high conductivity and mechanical properties, which is important for their practical applications. Herein, ionogels with high mechanical strength and stretchability, extraordinary ionic conductivity, excellent transparency, outstanding durability, and stability are fabricated with crosslinked polymer, ionic liquid, and lithium salt. The adoption of lithium salt can significantly improve both the mechanical strength and stretchability, which is a common dilemma in material science, and simultaneously, address the conflict between mechanical strength and ionic conductivity in ionogels. It is primarily corresponding to the microphase‐separation effects induced by the lithium bonds formed between lithium ions and carbonyl groups on the polymer networks. Ionotronics including resistance‐type sensors for strain and temperature sensing and triboelectric nanogenerators with stable output performance are fabricated. Moreover, ionogel‐based microcircuit and sensing arrays with high resolution and accuracy are fabricated through digital light processing printing technology. The ionogels have great promise for various ionotronics in many fields.

Mechanically Robust and Highly Conductive Ionogels for Soft Ionotronics

Intelligent perception means that with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI)-motivated brain, flexible sensors achieve the ability of memory, learning, judgment, and reasoning about external information like the human brain. Due to the superiority of machine learning (ML) algorithms in data processing and intelligent recognition, intelligent perception systems possess the ability to match or even surpass human perception systems. However, the built-in flexible sensors in these systems need to work on dynamic and irregular surfaces, inevitably affecting the precision and fidelity of the acquired data. In recent years, the strategy of introducing the developed functional materials and innovative structures into flexible sensors has made some progress toward the above challenges, and with the blessing of ML algorithms, accurate perception and reasoning in various scenarios have been achieved. Here, the most representative functional materials and innovative structures for constructing flexible sensors are comprehensively reviewed, the research progress of intelligent perception systems based on flexible sensors and ML algorithms is further summarized, and the intersection of the two is expected to unlock new opportunities for next-stage AI development.

Advances in flexible sensors for intelligent perception system enhanced by artificial intelligence

Human beings have a greater need to pursue life and manage personal or family health in the context of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, and 5G/6G technologies. The application of micro biosensing devices is crucial in connecting technology and personalized medicine. Here, the progress and current status from biocompatible inorganic materials to organic materials and composites are reviewed and the material-to-device processing is described. Next, the operating principles of pressure, chemical, optical, and temperature sensors are dissected and the application of these flexible biosensors in wearable/implantable devices is discussed. Different biosensing systems acting in vivo and in vitro, including signal communication and energy supply are then illustrated. The potential of in-sensor computing for applications in sensing systems is also discussed. Finally, some essential needs for commercial translation are highlighted and future opportunities for flexible biosensors are considered.

Biocompatible Material-Based Flexible Biosensors: From Materials Design to Wearable/Implantable Devices and Integrated Sensing Systems.

Abstract Due to the development of the novel materials, the past two decades have witnessed the rapid advances of soft electronics. The soft electronics have huge potential in the physical sign monitoring and health care. One of the important advantages of soft electronics is forming good interface with skin, which can increase the user scale and improve the signal quality. Therefore, it is easy to build the specific dataset, which is important to improve the performance of machine learning algorithm. At the same time, with the assistance of machine learning algorithm, the soft electronics have become more and more intelligent to realize real-time analysis and diagnosis. The soft electronics and machining learning algorithms complement each other very well. It is indubitable that the soft electronics will bring us to a healthier and more intelligent world in the near future. Therefore, in this review, we will give a careful introduction about the new soft material, physiological signal detected by soft devices, and the soft devices assisted by machine learning algorithm. Some soft materials will be discussed such as two-dimensional material, carbon nanotube, nanowire, nanomesh, and hydrogel. Then, soft sensors will be discussed according to the physiological signal types (pulse, respiration, human motion, intraocular pressure, phonation, etc.). After that, the soft electronics assisted by various algorithms will be reviewed, including some classical algorithms and powerful neural network algorithms. Especially, the soft device assisted by neural network will be introduced carefully. Finally, the outlook, challenge, and conclusion of soft system powered by machine learning algorithm will be discussed.
