Designing multi-resonance (MR) emitters that can simultaneously achieve narrowband emission and suppressed intermolecular interactions is challenging for realizing high color purity and stable blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Herein, a sterically shielded yet extremely rigid emitter based on a triptycene-fused B,N core (Tp-DABNA) is proposed to address the issue. Tp-DABNA exhibits intense deep blue emissions with a narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) and a high horizontal transition dipole ratio, superior to the well-known bulky emitter, t-DABNA. The rigid MR skeleton of Tp-DABNA suppresses structural relaxation in the excited state, with reduced contributions from the medium- and high-frequency vibrational modes to spectral broadening. The hyperfluorescence (HF) film composed of a sensitizer and Tp-DABNA shows reduced Dexter energy transfer compared to those of t-DABNA and DABNA-1. Notably, deep blue TADF-OLEDs with the Tp-DABNA emitter display higher external quantum efficiencies (EQEmax = 24.8%) and narrower FWHMs (< 26 nm) than t-DABNA-based OLEDs (EQEmax = 19.8%). The HF-OLEDs based on the Tp-DABNA emitter further demonstrate improved performance with an EQEmax of 28.7% and mitigated efficiency roll-offs.

Operational lifetime improvement of solution-processed OLEDs: Effect of exciton formation region and degradation analysis by impedance spectroscopy

Significance Design of nanostructured protein materials is a big challenge due to structural complexity. Even more challenging is the design of protein nanomaterials endowed with specific properties and functions. Here, we report a prototype oxygen-impermeable protein nanocage assembled from the pentameric vertex protein of β-carboxysomes, CcmL, through nanoparticle templating. We solved the structure of the cage at the atomic scale by integrating solid-state NMR spectroscopy and cryoelectron microscopy and designed a molecular patch to the pores of the cage based on the structure, establishing a gating mechanism for reversible control of the oxygen permeability. The CcmL cage can serve as a protein nanoplatform for oxygen-sensitive or -responsive storage, catalysis, delivery, sensing, etc. Protein nanocages (PNCs) in cells and viruses have inspired the development of self-assembling protein nanomaterials for various purposes. Despite the successful creation of artificial PNCs, the de novo design of PNCs with defined permeability remains challenging. Here, we report a prototype oxygen-impermeable PNC (OIPNC) assembled from the vertex protein of the β-carboxysome shell, CcmL, with quantum dots as the template via interfacial engineering. The structure of the cage was solved at the atomic scale by combined solid-state NMR spectroscopy and cryoelectron microscopy, showing icosahedral assembly of CcmL pentamers with highly conserved interpentamer interfaces. Moreover, a gating mechanism was established by reversibly blocking the pores of the cage with molecular patches. Thus, the oxygen permeability, which was probed by an oxygen sensor inside the cage, can be completely controlled. The CcmL OIPNC represents a PNC platform for oxygen-sensitive or oxygen-responsive storage, catalysis, delivery, sensing, etc.

Molecular engineering by triptycene groups enables homoleptic Ir(III) complexes with enhanced electroluminescent properties

A series of charge-neutral cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes (1–3 and 5–7) containing triptycene-substituted ligands (tbt and tpbi) and two parent complexes (4 and 8) were synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures indicated that π–π stacking interactions existed in ligand tbtH, but not in complex 6. However, a large intramolecular repulsion was found in complex 6. These triptycene-based complexes exhibited good thermal stability, which was higher compared with that of the parent complexes. These complexes showed green to yellow emission with peaks that ranged from 503 to 563 nm. The introduction of the rigid non-conjugate triptycene skeleton caused a slight emission red shift ( 47%) was observed. The electroluminescent devices employing 2 and 6 as phosphors displayed impressive performance improvements and low efficiency roll-off because of the higher PLQYs and HOMO levels of these triptycene-based complexes. The maximum current and external quantum efficiencies of the devices based on complexes 2 and 6 were 41.7 cd A−1, 11.9% and 41.2 cd A−1, 12.6%, respectively, which were about 31% higher than that of the devices based on the parent complexes 4 and 8. This work provides a novel approach to develop highly efficient phosphors with a triptycene skeleton.
