Plant growth depends on soil and water environment of root and atmospheric environment of canopy. With the synergistic effect of environmental factors, it can affect the process of plant energy transportation, material interchange, and physiological accommodation. Aiming at two different micro-environments under flooding and drought condition in paddy field, this article conducted research on the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) change law under water level regulation, and the relationship between Pn and soil and water environment and atmospheric environmental factors. Results showed that Pn descended in all growth stages under flooding or drought treatment. The descending range for lower leakage amount (2 mm/d) was slightly higher than that for higher leakage amount (4 mm/d), and it was slightly higher for heavy drought (-600 mm) with the comparison to light drought (-400 mm). Pn exhibited an impact of quadric relationship on photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) and CO2 concentration (Ci) – both in the morning and in the afternoon, while it exhibited an impact of quadric relationship on air temperature (Ta) in the morning, and a linear relationship in the afternoon. It showed no obvious relationship on relative humidity (RH) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). With the comparison of two photosynthetic light response models under water-level regulation, it illustrated the flooding and drought conditions that resulted in Pn decreasing according to the light suppression effect, while it showed the physiological compensation effect after rewatering. Response of Net Photosynthetic Rateto Environmental Factors under Water LevelRegulation in Paddy Field

The soil microbial community serves as a crucial indicator for assessing soil fertility and health. The composition and activity of soil microorganisms reflect the soil&amp;#039;s well-being and its ability to provide proper nutrients for crops. Fertilization plays a prominent role in enhancing soil fertility, and novel types of fertilizers, such as stabilized fertilizers with nitrification/urease inhibitors and coated fertilizers, have gained popularity in rice and maize cultivation. However, the long-term effects of these stabilized and coated urea fertilizers on soil chemical properties, microbial di-versity and community structure, as well as nitrogen cycling functional genes, remain unclear. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the impact of extended use of stabilized and coated urea fertilizers on soil fertility and microbiota in rice paddy fields. This research will provide scientific and theoretical support for the development and promotion of stabilized and coated urea ferti-lizers. To examine the effects of long-term application of these stabilized and coated urea fertilizers on soil chemical properties and microorganisms in rice paddy fields, soil samples were collected from brown soil rice paddy fields treated with various urease and nitrification inhibitors, stable urea, sulfur-coated urea (SCU), and resin-coated urea (PCU). &#x0D; The study revealed that 16 years of long-term use of conventional urea nitrogen fertilizer led to a considerable reduction in soil TP. On the other hand, NBPT and conventional urea fertilizers, when applied for an extended period, significantly increased soil organic matter (SOM). Moreover, except for HQ and NBPT+DMPP, the prolonged application of new urea fertilizers also signifi-cantly enhanced soil total potassium (TK). Notably, among all the treatments, PCU treatment had higher values for various soil chemical properties. In the case of SCU fertilizer used in brown soil rice paddy fields, it resulted in a significant decrease in soil pH over time. However, this change in pH did not affect the population of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), as it was primarily in-fluenced by soil available nitrogen. DMPP, HQ+DCD, NBPT+DMPP, SCU, and PCU significantly reduced the copy number of bacterial 16S rRNA genes in the soil, with the coated urea fertilizers (SCU and PCU) having a greater impact.&#x0D; The long-term use of stabilized urea fertilizers containing HQ significantly reduced the bacterial community in rice paddy soil. Conversely, HQ+DCD stable urea fertilizer significantly increased the population structure and abundance of Basidiomycota fungi while decreasing the population structure and abundance of Rozellomycota fungi. DMPP stabilized urea fertilizer notably increased the population structure and abundance of Ascomycota fungi while decreasing the population structure and abundance of Rozellmycota and Chytridiomycota fungi. Further-more, HQ stabilized urea fertilizer significantly reduced the population structure and abundance of Chytridiomycota fungi. It is important to note that SCU fertilizer is not suitable for long-term application in neutral to slightly acidic meadow brown soil with a background pH. On the other hand, stable urea fertilizers and resin-coated urea fertilizers containing HQ, NBPT, DCD, DMPP, and their combinations are suitable for long-term application in neutral to slightly acidic meadow brown soil.

A Mixture of Controlled-Release and Common Urea Application Increases Yield by Improving Soil Properties and Regulating Bacterial Communities During Critical Periods of Zea Mays L. Growth

Halophyte-based desalinization is emerging as a promising technology for saline agriculture. However, few studies have integrated halophytes into intercropping systems. This study investigated Suaeda salsa and soybean intercropping and the associated mechanisms, including changes in salt, nutrients, and bacterial communities at three salt treatments (control, 3‰, and 5‰). The results showed that regardless of salt treatment, soybean biomass and P content significantly increased in intercropping compared with monocropping, by an average of 32% and 51%, respectively (p &lt; 0.05), indicating interspecific facilitation. Under 5‰ salt, soybean mortality decreased from 37% in monocropping to 10% in intercropping, and shoot Na decreased by over 60% in intercropping; the rhizosphere Na+, Cl−, and NO3−–N decreased in intercropping by over 75% compared with monocropping, and the response ratios correlated negatively with S. salsa biomass (p &lt; 0.01). The soybean rhizosphere bacterial community in intercropping was enriched with the genera Sphingomonas, Salinimicrobium, Lysobacter, Allorhizobium–Neorhizobium–Pararhizobium–Rhizobium, and Ramlibacter, and the bacterial co-occurrence network exhibited increases in the number of nodes and edges, average degree, and average clustering coefficient. Considering the combined effects, the soybean biomass of intercropping correlated positively with bacterial co-occurrence network parameters, including average degree and number of edges, independent of tissue salt and nutrient content, and that of monocropping correlated negatively with tissue salt content. These results demonstrate that S. salsa intercropping could alleviate salt stress in soybean by creating a low-salt environment and improving its nutrient accumulation and rhizosphere bacterial community, and emphasize the importance of microbial communities in influencing soybean growth.

Effects of Different Paddy Field Drainage Degrees and Panicle Nitrogen Fertilizer Managements on Photosynthetic Productivity and Nitrogen Utilization of Rice under Triangle-Planted System of Rice Intensification

Increased complexity of microbial networks can contribute to increased biodiversity and multifunctionality and thus crop productivity. However, it is not clear which combination ratio of regular and controlled-release urea will increase the soil microbial community complexity and improve maize yield in the North China Plain. To address this knowledge gap, a 2-year field experiment was conducted to explore the effects of the combination of regular (U) and controlled release (S) urea ratios [no fertilizer control (CT), regular urea alone (U), controlled-release urea alone (S), controlled-release urea mixed with regular urea 3:7 (SU3), controlled-release urea mixed with regular urea 5:5 (SU5), and controlled-release urea mixed with regular urea 7:3 (SU7)] on XianYu 688 yield and its rhizosphere and bulk soil microbial community composition and network complexity at different fertility stages. The combination of controlled-release and regular urea increased the N agronomic efficiency, N partial factors productivity, maize yield, and grain number per spike, with the maximum maize yield (9,186 kg ha–1) being achieved when the ratio of controlled-release urea to regular urea was 3:7 (SU3, p < 0.05). Maize yield increased by 13% in the SU3 treatment compared to the CT treatment. Rhizosphere soil microbial diversity remained stable at the silking stage of maize while increased at the physiological maturity stage of maize, with the increasing controlled-release to regular N fertilizer ratios (from 3:7 to 7:3, p < 0.05). This result suggests that a combination of regular and controlled-release N fertilizer can still substantially increase soil microbial diversity in the later stages of maize growth. The combination of controlled-release and regular urea is more effective in improving microbial network total links and average degree, and N agronomic efficiency (R2 = 0.79, p < 0.01), N partial factor productivity (R2 = 0.79, p < 0.01), spikes per unit area (R2 = 0.54, p < 0.05), and maize yield (R2 = 0.42, p < 0.05) increased with the microbial network complexity. This result indicates that the higher microbial network complexity is strongly associated with the higher N agronomic efficiency and N partial factors productivity and maize yield. In conclusion, the ratio of controlled-release to regular urea at SU3 not only increases the yield of maize and N agronomic efficiency but also enhances microbial diversity and network complexity in the North China Plain.
