Optimization of drilling processes for oil and gas and geothermal wells requires the effective use of mechanical energy for the destruction of rocks. When constructing a well, an important indicator of the drilling stage is the mechanical speed. Therefore, when performing drilling operations, operators usually use blade bits of an aggressive design and often use forced drilling modes. Drill bits under forced operation modes generate a wide range of vibrations in the drilling tools; in turn, a drill string, being a long-dimensional deformable body, causes the development, amplification, and interconnection of vibrations of different types. Vibration loads reduce the technical and economic indicators of drilling, with destructive effects on drill string elements, and cause complications and emergencies. The authors initiated the creation of an informational and analytical database on emergency situations that occurred as a result of excessive vibrations of the drill string during the construction of deep wells in the deposits of the Dnipro–Donetsk Basin. For the first time, the suitability and effectiveness of using the Smart 4 controller (“Innova Power Solutions”, Calgary, Canada) for monitoring the vibration load of the drilling tool was tested in industrial conditions, while the controller was used as a separate element in the drill string. A special module was developed for the reliable installation of the Smart 4 controller, with a power battery in the layout of the lower part of the drill string. During the testing of the proposed device for measuring vibrations in the process of drilling an inclined well, verification of the registered data was carried out with the help of a high-cost telemetry system. The implementation of the proposed innovation will allow each operator to assess the significance of the impact of vibrations and shocks on the production process and, if necessary, adjust the drilling modes or apply vibration protection devices. In addition, service departments that operate and repair drilling equipment will be able to obtain an evidence base for resolving warranty disputes or claims.

Decoding Brain’s Electrical Activity: Leveraging Hilbert Transforming Techniques for EEG Analysis

The high-frequency information of downhole vibration can record more specific details about the dynamic response of bottom hole assembly (BHA), which is conducive to analyzing downhole abnormal vibration and diagnosing drilling tool failure. However, high frequency measurements would generate a large amount of data, which is a huge challenge for data storage. To cope with this challenge, this work proposes applying compressive sensing theory to high-frequency measurement of downhole vibration signals and failure analysis of drilling tools. First, three ADCs clocked at different sub-Nyquist frequencies are used to collect and store downhole vibration signals. Then, the stored sparse vibration data is reconstructed into complete vibration signal by an improved OMP signal reconstruction algorithm. The performance of the proposed method has been investigated via a series of experiments by applying simulation and real vibration signals, which show that the proposed method can reconstruct the downhole vibration signal well and significantly reduce the pressure of acquisition and data storage. This method provides a new way to obtain the high-frequency measurement data of downhole vibration, and provides a data basis for further mastering the comprehensive law of downhole vibration, diagnosing abnormal downhole vibration, and drilling tool failure.

A high-frequency measurement method of downhole vibration signal based on compressed sensing technology and its application in drilling tool failure analysis

In the rotary steering drilling process, directional drilling engineers use downlink commands to control the drilling tool according to the wellbore trajectory, and actual downlink commands are affected by various transmission processes. To further investigate the effect of drilling parameters on downlink command transmission, shorten the drilling cycle, and improve the drilling efficiency by building a downlink command simulation model in Simulink to simulate the actual transmission process of the downlink signal in the well. The decoding correlation rate of downlink commands received by downhole tools was used as a measure for DOE tests. The Box-Behnken experimental design method was used to investigate the effect of drilling parameters on the magnitude of the decoding correlation rate of downlink command signals. After response surface analysis, the factors that significantly affect the decoding correlation of downlink commands are obtained. And the optimal solutions of each parameter are obtained when the decoding correlation rate reaches 0.96.
