Practical implications and future research agenda of lean manufacturing: a systematic literature review

This Paper takes a broader look at how vertical linkages can trigger the spatial agglomeration of economic activity in a ‘new economic geography’ (NEG) set-up. First, it formally establishes the key positive features of a wide class of vertical-linkage models without resorting to numerical simulations. Second, it proposes an analytically solvable model of this class. Third, it addresses the important though neglected issue of whether in such models market forces yield too much or too little agglomeration. It shows that, in terms of positive implications, vertical-linkage models are identical to migration models once considered in their ‘natural’ state space. Important differences arise, however, in terms of normative implications in the absence of interregional transfers: in migration models agglomeration is necessarily bad for people stuck in lagging regions; in the vertical-linkage models it can be good for everybody as it delivers richer product variety.

The 'Genome' of NEG Models with Vertical Linkages: A Positive and Normative Synthesis

This paper employs fixed effect quantile regression techniques to study the effects of technological relatedness on firm productivity and to investigate whether the size of those effects varies for low and high performing firms. Next, we consider how changes in the local industrial mix brought about by China's market reforms influence the ability of different types of firms to benefit from technological related spillovers. The findings highlight the important role that technological relatedness has on increasing firm productivity, providing some support that regions should pursue a strategy of 'regional branching' to evolve the local industrial mix into related economic activities. The findings also reveal, however, that increasing technological relatedness may asymmetrically harm under performing firms and widen disparities in productivity between local firms.

A rich agenda for future research in the field of Lean Manufacturing (LM) is available in the academic literature The purpose of this paper is to determine the LM future research methodologies suggested in the literature and to classify them into themes Classifying these themes into broad categories is also an aim of the present study,For the purpose of the present study, a systematic literature review (SLR) of peer reviewed journal articles in LM was conducted A total of 214 articles published in 46 journals during 2010–2020 were collected from four major management science publishers, namely, Emerald Online, Elsevier/Science Direct, Springer Link and Taylor and Francis To organize the qualitative data into meaningful themes and these themes into broad categories, the quality tool “affinity diagram” was applied,The review of LM articles that are increasing over time reveals the “vital few” academic journals, which have published most of the sample articles The plethora of the suggested future research methodologies are analytically presented and classified into meaningful themes, namely, the size of the research sample and its composition, several types of study (other than surveys), longitudinal studies, applying advanced statistical analysis and (mathematical) modeling techniques, objective, real and quantitative data, surveys, mixed/multiple research studies, reliability and validity analysis, using computer-aided technology for data collection and processing and research collaborations These themes in turn are classified into broad categories, namely, study, data and statistical analysis and modeling,This SLR is not comprehensive because the number of the databases searched is restricted to four Moreover, the literature review is limited to peer reviewed journal articles regarding Lean only in the manufacturing sector, while the subject reviewed is limited to the future research methodologies The subjectivity of classifying the large number of the future research methodologies into themes and these themes into broad categories is also a limitation of the present SLR Based on these limitations, future literature review studies can be carried out,Researchers can be analytically informed about the future research methodologies suggested in the literature and their respective key themes and broad categories, to design original research studies of high academic and practical value,This study goes beyond previous SLRs on LM by presenting analytically the plethora of the future research methodologies suggested in the literature as well as by identifying natural patterns or groupings of these methodologies

Future research methodologies of lean manufacturing: a systematic literature review

The global industrial chain and energy supply chain are being reconfigured at an accelerated pace, and the uncertainty of China’s energy supply security is growing significantly. Empowering energy supply chains through the digital economy (diec) has a positive effect on accelerating the transformation of China’s energy supply structure. This paper discusses the effect and mechanisms of the digital economy on energy supply chain efficiency (esce). Specifically, based on the panel data of 112 energy enterprises in China from 2011 to 2019, energy supply chain efficiency and digital economy at the enterprise level were evaluated through three-stage DEA and content analysis, respectively. A two-way fixed effects model and mediation effect mode were adopted to investigate the nexus of diec and esce. The results show that the digital economy improves energy supply chain efficiency, and the conclusion holds water even after a series of robustness tests and endogenous treatment. Meanwhile, its promotion effect is more significant among large enterprises, non-state enterprises and enterprises in high market-oriented regions. The main impact mechanisms are regional industrial agglomeration and technological innovation of enterprises. Based on the above conclusions, it is suggested to take advantage of the industrial aggregation effect and technological innovation effect of the digital economy to further improve the efficiency of the energy supply chain for the purpose of maintaining energy supply security.

Impact of Digital Economy on Energy Supply Chain Efficiency: Evidence from Chinese Energy Enterprises

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between inventory leanness and venture survival, and demonstrate the role of organizational environments in moderating this relationship from three dimensions: environmental complexity, dynamism and munificence.,Using a large panel data of more than 150,000 new Chinese small- and medium-sized enterprises between 2000 and 2007 in the manufacturing sector, the authors employ the method of survival analysis via an accelerated failure time model to explore the non-linear relationship between inventory leanness and the likelihood of survival. Moreover, the moderation model is applied to examine the moderating role of organizational environments.,At its core, this paper demonstrates the inverted U-shaped relationship between inventory leanness and the likelihood of survival. Furthermore, the authors find that environmental complexity and dynamism can negatively moderate this relationship, whereas environmental munificence acts the exact opposite.,Managers need to realize the trade-off between inventory leanness and venture survival. Collectively, more than 90 percent of new Chinese ventures have great potential to improve the likelihood of survival by implementing inventory leanness management. In addition, firms ought to be fully aware of the internal management and the external environments.,This is the first study to confirm the inverted U-shaped relationship between inventory leanness and the likelihood of survival, and empirically verify the moderating role of environmental complexity, dynamism and munificence on this relationship.

The moderating role of organizational environments on the relationship between inventory leanness and venture survival in Chinese manufacturing

From the intra- and inter-regional dimensions, this paper investigates the linkage between industrial agglomeration and inventory performance, and further demonstrates the moderating role of firm size and enterprise status in the supply chain on this linkage.,Using a large panel dataset of Chinese manufacturers in the Yangtze River Delta for the period from 2008 to 2013, this study employs the method of spatial econometric analysis via a spatial Durbin model (SDM) to examine the effects of industrial agglomeration on inventory performance. Meanwhile, the moderation model is applied to examine the moderating role of two firm-level heterogeneity factors.,At its core, this research demonstrates that industrial agglomeration is associated with the positive change of inventory performance in the adjacent regions, whereas that in the host region as well as in general does not significantly increase. Additionally, both firm size and enterprise status in the supply chain can positively moderate these effects, except for the moderating role of firm size on the positive spillovers.,In view of firm heterogeneity, managers should take special care when matching their abilities of inventory management with the agglomeration effects. Firms with a high level of inventory management are suited to stay in an industrial cluster, while others would be better in the adjacent regions to enhance inventory performance.,This paper is the first to systematically analyze the effects of industrial agglomeration on inventory performance within and across clusters, and confirm that these effects are contingent upon firm size and enterprise status in the supply chain. It adds to the existing literature by highlighting the spatial spillovers from industrial clusters and enriching the antecedents of inventory leanness.
