Novel Wearable Optical Sensors for Vital Health Monitoring Systems—A Review

The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique with ultrahigh sensitivity has gained attention to meet the increasing demands for food safety analysis. The integration of machine learning and SERS facilitates the practical applicability of sensing devices. In this study, a machine learning-driven 3D plasmonic cavity-in-cavity (CIC) SERS platform is proposed for sensitive and quantitative detection of antibiotics. The platform is prepared by transferring truncated concave nanocubes (NCs) to an obconical-shaped template surface. Owing to the triple synergistic enhancement effect, the highly ordered 3D CIC arrays improve the simulated electromagnetic field intensity and experimental SERS activity, demonstrating a 33.1-fold enhancement compared to a typical system consisting of Au NCs deposited on a flat substrate. The integration of machine learning and Raman spectroscopy eliminates subjective judgments on the concentration of detectors using a single feature peak and achieves accurate identification. The machine learning-driven CIC SERS platform is capable of detecting ampicillin traces in milk with a detection limit of 0.1 ppm, facilitating quantitative analysis of different concentrations of ampicillin. Therefore, the proposed platform has potential applications in food safety monitoring, health care, and environmental sampling.

Machine Learning-Driven 3D Plasmonic Cavity-in-Cavity Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Platform with Triple Synergistic Enhancement Toward Label-Free Detection of Antibiotics in Milk.

As two pollutants with similar transport pathways, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics (ATs) inevitably co-exist in water environments, and their interaction has become a topic of intense research interest for scholars over the past few years. This paper comprehensively and systematically reviews the current interaction between MPs and ATs, in particular, the role played by biofilm developed MPs (microplastic biofilm). A summary of the formation process of microplastic biofilm and its unique microbial community structure is presented in the paper. The formation of microplastic biofilm can enhance the adsorption mechanisms of ATs on primary MPs. Moreover, microplastic biofilm system is a diverse and vast reservoir of genetic material, and this paper reviews the mechanisms by which microplastics with biofilm drive the production of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the processes that selectively enrich for more ARGs. Meanwhile, the enrichment of ARGs may lead to the development of microbial resistance and the gradual loss of the antimicrobial effect of ATs. The transfer pathways of ARGs affected by microplastic biofilm are outlined, and ARGs dependent transfer of antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) is mainly through horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Furthermore, the ecological implications of the interaction between microplastic biofilm and ATs and perspectives for future research are reviewed. This review contributes to a new insight into the aquatic ecological environmental risks and the fate of contaminants (MPs, ATs), and is of great significance for controlling the combined pollution of these two pollutants. 

Interaction between microplastic biofilm formation and antibiotics: Effect of microplastic biofilm and its driving mechanisms on antibiotic resistance gene.

Flexible sweat sensors have found widespread potential applications for long-term wear and tracking and real-time monitoring of human health. However, the main substrate currently used in common flexible sweat sensors is thin film, which has disadvantages such as poor air permeability and the need for additional wearables. In this Review, the recent progress of sweat sensors has been systematically summarized by the types of monitoring methods of sweat sensors. In addition, this Review introduces and compares the performance of sweat sensors based on thin film and textile substrates such as fiber/yarn. Finally, opportunities and suggestions for the development of flexible sweat sensors are presented by summarizing the integration methods of sensors and human body monitoring sites.

Flexible Sweat Sensors: From Films to Textiles.

The development of wearable non-invasive glucose sensors provides a convenient technical means to monitor the glucose concentration of diabetes patients without discomfortability and risk of infection. Apart from enzymes as typical catalytic materials, the active catalytic materials of the glucose sensor are mainly composed of polymers, metals, alloys, metal compounds, and various metals that can undergo catalytic oxidation with glucose. Among them, metallic nanomaterials are the optimal materials applied in the field of wearable non-invasive glucose sensing due to good biocompatibility, large specific surface area, high catalytic activity, and strong adsorption capacity. This review summarizes the metallic nanomaterials used in wearable non-invasive glucose sensors including zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), and two-dimensional (2D) monometallic nanomaterials, bimetallic nanomaterials, metal oxide nanomaterials, etc. Besides, the applications of wearable non-invasive biosensors based on these metallic nanomaterials towards glucose detection are summarized in detail and the development trend of the wearable non-invasive glucose sensors based on metallic nanomaterials is also outlook. 

Wearable non-invasive glucose sensors based on metallic nanomaterials

A novel approach is developed to fabricate an ultra-thin layered flexible wearable Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrate named silk fibroin-anodic aluminum oxide-Au nanoparticles (SF-AAO-Au), which consists of biocompatible SF film as flexible support, ultrathin cavity AAO as template, and plasmonic Au NPs. The SF-AAO-Au sensor exhibits excellent SERS mechanical flexibility, homogeneity and sensitivity for its effective enhancement ability and highly ordered 3D periodic porous particle-in-cavity (PIC) arrays structure. The humidity-driven interface structure of biocompatible SF film provides good skin adhesion under various fitness tests and excellent mechanical flexibility as a wearable SERS sensor on natural skin (deformation within 5%). The flexible SF-AAO-Au can be developed as quantitative sweat glucose sensor in the concentration range of 10 − 7 to 10 − 3 M with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.68 × 10 − 7 M and qualitative human sweat glucose detection ability. This SF-AAO-Au substrate can be further designed as lab-on-glove SERS sensing platform for ultrasensitive (LOD ~5.7 ppt) quantitative on-site detection of agricultural residues in a wide range. The effective dual-functional SERS wearable sensor realized for the first time paves a new way to develop smart wearable and non-destructive devices in environmental safety, forensic identification and point-of-care testing (POCT) diagnosis of physiological disease. • A novel humidity-driven flexible SF-AAO-Au substrate with highly ordered 3D periodic porous PIC arrays structure is developed as excellent wearable SERS sensor for sweat glucose analysis. • This SF-AAO-Au substrate can be further designed as effective quantitative agricultural residues lab-on-glove SERS sensor. • The effective dual-functional wearable SERS sensor is realized for the first time.
