In this paper, we consider a fractional order prey predator model with a prey and two predator species with the group defense capability. In this model, we use the Holling-IV functional response, called Monod-Haldane function, for interactions between prey and predator species. Boundedness of the solution will be proved. Local stability of system’s equilibrium points will be investigated analytically and the required conditions for existence of Hopf bifurcation will be obtained. Finally, by using numerical methods, the validity of the obtained results and more dynamical behaviors of system, such as chaotic and periodic solutions will be assessed.

This paper describes a prey–predator fishery system with prey dispersal in a two-patch environment, one of which is a free fishing zone and the other a protected zone. The proposed system reflects the dynamic interaction between the net economic revenue and the fishing effort used to harvest the population in presence of a suitable tax. Local as well as global stability of the system is analyzed. The optimal taxation policy is formulated and solved with the help of Pontryagin’s maximal principle. The objective of the paper is to achieve the sustainability of the fishery, keeping the ecological balance, and maximize the monetary social benefit. The dynamical behavior of the delay system is further analyzed through incorporating discrete type gestational delay of predators, and the existence of Hopf bifurcation phenomenon is checked at the interior equilibrium point. Moreover, we use normal form method and center manifold theorem to examine the nature of the Hopf bifurcation. Theoretical results are verified with the help of numerical examples and graphical illustrations.

Effort dynamics of a delay-induced prey–predator system with reserve

Defense mechanisms are very important to all animal life. Predators in every biome must eat to survive. With predators being top on the food chain and always on the lookout for a meal, prey must constantly avoid being eaten. In this paper, we have proposed and analyzed a tri-trophic predator–prey model of one prey and two predator exhibiting group defense mechanism. We have assumed Monod-Haldane functional response for interaction between species due to group defense ability of prey and middle predator. We have performed Kolmogorov and Hopf bifurcation analysis for the model system. Linear and global stability of the model system have been analyzed. Lyapunov exponents are computed numerically and 2D scan for different parameters of the model have performed to characterize the complex behavior of the model system. The numerical simulations shows the chaotic and periodic oscillations of the model system for certain range of parameter. We have drawn bifurcation diagrams for different parameter values which shows the complex dynamical behavior of model system. This work is an attempt to study the effect of group defense mechanism of prey in predator population and effect of immigration within top predator population is investigated. It is also observed that in the presence of group defense, the model system stabilizes after adding a small amount of constant immigration within top predator population.

Complex behavior of prey-predator system exhibiting group defense: A mathematical modeling study

Many prey organisms have developed defense mechanisms against predation. If the predator can encounter in a limited spatial domain, the feeding rates reflect interference between predators and the corresponding functional response depends on both predator and prey densities. In this manuscript, an attempt has been made to understand the role of top predator interference and gestation delays on the dynamics of a three-species food chain model involving intermediate and top predators population. Interaction between the prey and an intermediate predator follows the Monod–Haldane functional response, while that between the top predator and its prey depends on Beddington–DeAngelis-type functional response. Analytically, we study the essential mathematical features such as boundedness, stability and direction of bifurcating periodic solution around the coexisting equilibrium for the model system. Numerically, we study the Hopf and transcritical bifurcations scenarios with respect to inhibitory effect of phytoplankton against zooplankton and death rate of fish population for the non-delayed system. Further, we study the stability behavior of the delayed model system. Model system exhibits irregular behavior when the interference is high or gestation period is larger than its critical value. Further, the system shows extinction of predators with the increase in inhibitory effect. Stability domain plots with respect to different important system parameters for non-delayed system and delay parameters for delayed system give a significant impact to study the stability of the different equilibrium points and bifurcation scenarios of both non-delayed and delayed systems. Our results point out the complexity of three-way interactions between phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish population in marine environment and highlight the role of predator interference and gestation delays in exhibiting the chaotic dynamics and extinction of predator population.

Modeling the plankton–fish dynamics with top predator interference and multiple gestation delays

By introducing impulsive biological control strategy, the dynamic behaviors of the two-prey one-predator model with defensive ability and Holling type-II functional response are investigated. By using Floquet’s Theorem and the small amplitude perturbation method, we prove that there exists an asymptotically stable pest-eradication periodic solution when the impulsive period is less than some critical minimum value, and permanence conditions (that is, the impulsive period is greater than some critical maximum value) are established via the method of comparison involving multiple Liapunov functions. It is shown that our impulsive control strategy is more effective than the classical one. Furthermore, the effect of impulsive perturbations on the unforced continuous system is studied. From simulations, we find that the system has more complex dynamic behaviors and is dominated by periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic solutions.
