A modular multilevel converter (MMC) is an advanced voltage source converter applicable to a wide range of medium and high-voltage applications. It has competitive advantages such as quality output performance, high modularity, simple scalability, and low voltage and current rating demand for the power switches. Remarkable studies have been carried out regarding its topology, control, and operation. The main purpose of this review is to present the current state of the art of the MMC technology and to offer a better understanding of its operation and control for stationary applications. In this study, the MMC configuration is presented regarding its conventional and advanced submodule (SM) and overall topologies. The mathematical modeling, output voltage, and current control under different grid conditions, submodule balancing control, circulating current control, and modulation methods are discussed to provide the state of the MMC technology. The challenges linked to the MMC are associated with submodule balancing control, circulating current control, control complexity, and transient performance. Advanced nonlinear and predictable control strategies are expected to improve the MMC control and performance in comparison with conventional control methods. Finally, the power losses associated with the advanced wide bandgap (WBG) power devices (such as SiC, GaN) are explored by using different modulation schemes and switching frequencies. The results indicate that although the phase-shifted carrier-based pulse width modulation (PSC-PWM) has higher power losses, it outputs a better quality voltage with lower total harmonic distortion (THD) in comparison with phase-disposition pulse width modulation (PD-PWM) and sampled average modulation pulse width modulation (SAM-PWM). In addition, WBG switches such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) devices have lower power losses and higher efficiency, especially at high switching frequency in the MMC applications.

A Review of Modular Multilevel Converters for Stationary Applications

Electric means of transportation have seen a rapid expansion partly due to flexibility to commuters and carbon emission reduction. However, transportation electrification is creating severe power quality problems in the utility grid. A single-phase voltage-source traction converter (VSTC) plays a vital role in high-speed train operation. However, it is partly blamed for injecting instability into the vehicle-grid coupling systems (VGCSs). Therefore, understanding the function of VSTC and complying with various grid codes and technical standards for VGCSs is essential. Furthermore, grid-connected VSTC must comply with strict safety standards, such as IEEE Std. 519 and IEEE Std. 16. However, with hundreds or thousands of literature available, it is difficult to choose an effective control method that meets all the requirements. Consequently, to illustrate a clear picture of the development of effective control strategies, this work review recent control techniques, mainly for harmonics rejection and low-frequency oscillation suppression. Factors affecting grid stability and control performance are first identified and discussed in detail. Then, effective control methods to alleviate the disturbance are elaborated. Moreover, future trends on control strategies for VSTCs considering the recent advancements of artificial intelligence are extensively discussed. 

Review of Recent Control Strategies for the Traction Converters in High-Speed Train

Advances in voltage-source converters (VSCs), as well as their successful application in VSC-HVDC systems, have motivated growing interests and research in medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) traction power systems (TPSs) for high-speed rail (HSR) applications. As an emerging power-converter-based infrastructure, this study reviewed developments that shape two key evolving pieces of equipment—namely, high-power traction substation (TSS) converters, and power electronic transformers (PETs)—for MVDC TPS as well as prospects for smart grid (SG) applications in the future. It can be deduced that cost-effective and robust high-power TSS converters are available from hybrid modular multilevel converters (MMCs) for enhanced performance and fault-tolerance capability. In addition, silicon carbide (SiC) MMC-based PETs with input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) configuration are present for greater weight/size reduction and efficiency for MVDC rolling stock design. Finally, the implementation of a smart MVDC TPS incorporating a sophisticated railway energy management system (REM-S) based on the smart grid principles is feasible in the future, with numerous benefits. However, there are related challenges, like knowledge gaps on these technologies, the high costs involved, and lack of standardization to overcome to realize widespread future commercial deployment.

MVDC railway traction power systems, state-of-the art, opportunities, and challenges

The industry and academia are focusing their efforts on finding more efficient and reliable electrical machines and motor drives. However, many of the motors driven by pulse-width modulated converters face the recurring problem of common-mode voltage (CMV). In fact, this voltage leads to other problems such as bearing breakdown, deterioration of the stator winding insulation and electromagnetic interferences (EMI) that can affect the lifespan and correct operation of the motors. In this sense, multilevel converters have proven to be a useful tool for solving these problems and mitigating CMV over the past few decades. Among other reasons, because they provide additional degrees of freedom when comparing with two-level converters. However, although there are several proposals in the scientific literature on this topic, no complete information has been reviewed about the CMV issues and the different multilevel alternatives that can be used to solve it. In this context, the objective of this work is to determine how multilevel power converters provide additional degrees of freedom to make the reduction of the CMV possible by using specific modulation techniques, making it easier for engineers and scientists in this field to find solutions to this problem. This document consists of a descriptive study that collects the strengths and weaknesses of most important multilevel power converters, with special emphasis on how CMV affects each of them. In addition, the differences of modulation techniques aimed to the CMV reduction are explained in terms of output voltage, operating linear range, and generated CMV. Considering this last, it is recommended to use those modulation techniques that allow the generation of CMV levels of 0 V in order to be able to completely eliminate said voltage.

Common-Mode Voltage Elimination in Multilevel Power Inverter-Based Motor Drive Applications

Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have attracted extensive research interests in various ac and dc conversion applications due to their modular structure and excellent harmonic performance. However, the large number of power switches increases the potential risk of submodule (SM) failure, which greatly challenges the safe and reliable operation of the MMC. This paper presents a detailed review of fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control methods of the MMC under SM failures. On this basis, comprehensive comparisons are conducted among different fault diagnosis methods, and verification results are provided to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the popular fault-tolerant control methods. Finally, the review is concluded, and future trends and research opportunities are discussed. 

Review of Fault Diagnosis and Fault-Tolerant Control Methods of the Modular Multilevel Converter Under Submodule Failure

In the present scenario, modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are considered to be one of the most promising and effective topologies in the family of high-power converters because of their modular design and good scalability; MMCs are extensively used in high-voltage and high-power applications. Based on their unique advantages, MMCs have attracted increasing attention from academic circles over the past years. Several studies have focused on different aspects of MMCs, including submodule topologies, modeling schemes, modulation strategies, control schemes for voltage balancing and circulating currents, fault diagnoses, and fault-tolerant control strategies. To summarize the current research status of MMCs, all the aforementioned research issues with representative research approaches, results and characteristics are systematically overviewed. In the final section, the current research status of MMCs and their future trends are emphasized.
