Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors enable precision sensing of an object in 3D. LiDAR technology is widely used in metrology, environment monitoring, archaeology, and robotics. It also shows high potential to be applied in autonomous driving. In traditional LiDAR sensors, mechanical rotator is used for optical beam scanning, which brings about limitations on their reliability, size, and cost. These limitations can be overcome by a more compact solid‐state solution. Solid‐state LiDAR sensors are commonly categorized into the following three types: flash‐based LiDAR, microelectromechanical system (MEMS)‐based LiDAR, and optical phased array (OPA)‐based LiDAR. Furthermore, advanced optics technology enables novel nanophotonics‐based devices with high potential and superior advantages to be utilized in a LiDAR sensor. In this review, LiDAR sensor principles are introduced, including three commonly used sensing schemes: pulsed time of flight (TOF), amplitude‐modulated continuous wave TOF, and frequency‐modulated continuous wave. Recent advances in conventional solid‐state LiDAR sensors are summarized and presented, including flash‐based LiDAR, MEMS‐based LiDAR, and OPA‐based LiDAR. The recent progress on emerging nanophotonics‐based LiDAR sensors is also covered. A summary is made and the future outlook on advanced LiDAR sensors is provided.

A Progress Review on Solid‐State LiDAR and Nanophotonics‐Based LiDAR Sensors

Integrated optical biosensors have become one of the most compelling technologies for the achievement of highly sensitive, multianalyte, portable and easy to use point-of-care (POC) devices with tremendous impact in healthcare and environmental protection, among other application fields. In this context, bimodal waveguide (BiMW) interferometers have emerged over the last years as a powerful biosensor technology providing the benefits of extreme sensitivity under a label-free scheme, reliability and robustness within a highly compact footprint that can be integrated and multiplexed in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) platforms. In this review, we provide an overview of the state-of-the-art about integrated optical BiMW biosensors from the theoretical fundamentals to their practical implementation. Furthermore, we explore recent advances such as novel designs, integration in specific LOC systems and its application in real biosensing scenarios. Final remarks and perspectives on the potential impact of these biosensor interferometric structures are also provided, as well as some limitations that must be addressed in next steps. 

Integrated optical bimodal waveguide biosensors: Principles and applications

Optical phased arrays (OPAs) with high speed, low power consumption, and low insertion loss are appealing for various applications, including light detection and ranging, free-space communication, image projection, and imaging. These OPAs can be achieved by fully harnessing the advantages of integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonics, which include high electro-optical modulation speed, low driving voltage, and low optical loss. Here we present an integrated LN OPA that operates in the near-infrared regime. Our experimental results demonstrate 24 × 8° two-dimensional beam steering, a far-field beam spot with a full width at half maximum of 2 × 0.6°, and a sidelobe suppression level of 10 dB. Furthermore, the phase modulator of our OPA exhibits a half-wave voltage of 6 V. The low power consumption exhibited by our OPA makes it highly attractive for a wide range of applications. Beyond conventional applications, our OPA’s high speed opens up the possibility of novel applications such as high-density point cloud generation and tomographic holography.

Integrated lithium niobate optical phased array for two-dimensional beam steering

Low-loss photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are the key elements in future quantum technologies, nonlinear photonics and neural networks. The low-loss photonic circuits technology targeting C-band application is well established across multi-project wafer (MPW) fabs, whereas near-infrared (NIR) PICs suitable for the state-of-the-art single-photon sources are still underdeveloped. Here, we report the labs-scale process optimization and optical characterization of low-loss tunable photonic integrated circuits for single-photon applications. We demonstrate the lowest propagation losses to the date (as low as 0.55 dB/cm at 925 nm wavelength) in single-mode silicon nitride submicron waveguides (220x550 nm). This performance is achieved due to advanced e-beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching steps which yields waveguides vertical sidewalls with down to 0.85 nm sidewall roughness. These results provide a chip-scale low-loss PIC platform that could be even further improved with high quality SiO2 cladding, chemical-mechanical polishing and multistep annealing for extra-strict single-photon applications.

Low-loss silicon nitride photonic ICs for single-photon applications

This article presents a comprehensive review of the laser-based guided ultrasonic waves propagation imaging (G-UPI) system and respective signal/data processing methods related to the nondestructive testing and evaluation of thin-walled structures. The primary goal of this study is to review and recognize various processing methods, explain the working principles of the most influential methods, and highlight outstanding capabilities. In addition, the suitability of the methods for multiple types of damage and defect in various materials and structures are presented. At the same time, success stories of difficult-to-inspect cases are highlighted. Its secondary goal is to compare and discuss the merits and demerits of the laser-scanning part of the system for ultrasound generation and acquisition to provide a guideline for scanning scheme or hardware selection. Finally, the potential challenges and prospects of the G-UPI are discussed. It is expected that this review would serve as an entrance key for newcomers and a reference point for researchers to explore the opportunities for further improvement in the laser ultrasound-based evaluation of critical engineering structures.

Guided ultrasonic waves propagation imaging: a review

Integrated optical phased arrays can be used for beam shaping and steering with a small footprint, lightweight, high mechanical stability, low price, and high-yield, benefiting from the mature CMOS-compatible fabrication. This paper reviews the development of integrated optical phased arrays in recent years. The principles, building blocks, and configurations of integrated optical phased arrays for beam forming and steering are presented. Various material platforms can be used to build integrated optical phased arrays, e.g., silicon photonics platforms, III/V platforms, and III–V/silicon hybrid platforms. Integrated optical phased arrays can be implemented in the visible, near-infrared, and mid-infrared spectral ranges. The main performance parameters, such as field of view, beamwidth, sidelobe suppression, modulation speed, power consumption, scalability, and so on, are discussed in detail. Some of the typical applications of integrated optical phased arrays, such as free-space communication, light detection and ranging, imaging, and biological sensing, are shown, with future perspectives provided at the end.

Integrated Optical Phased Arrays for Beam Forming and Steering

With the rapid development of portable equipment, the demand for the miniaturization of optical elements is increasing. Metasurfaces are considered as potential planar analogs of conventional devices due to their small size and their extraordinary ability to modulate light. As one of the most important branches of metasurfaces, metalenses attract much attention and are fascinating to develop compact, miniature optical imaging devices. However, the highly chromatic characteristic limits their further applications. Therefore, achromatic metalenses with constant focal lengths over a broad bandwidth are highly desirable. Here, we demonstrate a diffraction-limited achromatic metalens with an octave-wide bandwidth in the infrared. Unlike typical metalenses with periodic unit cells, the proposed metalens comprises well-designed an aperiodic array of elements based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase. The proposed metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.49 achieves an average focusing efficiency of 37% in a wavelength range from 1.15 to 2.3 μm, which is one octave, and maintains a near-constant focal length of 25 μm. It paves the way for miniaturized and broadband imaging applications.

Octave bandwidth aperiodic achromatic metalens in the infrared

Light sheet has been widely used for bioimaging. However, it is a big challenge to build a miniature light-sheet imaging system due to geometric constraints of bulky refractive and diffractive elements. Metasurface-based devices composed of subwavelength unit cells, with compact size and the ability to effectively manipulate optical fields, have been considered as potential planar analogs of conventional components to realize various functionalities. Integrating metasurfaces onto an optical fiber facet is sparking new ideas and emerging applications. Here, we propose a metasurface-on-fiber light-sheet generator, which can convert a fiber mode to a thin light sheet. By adopting a multi-core fiber and a dielectric metasurface on its facet, a light sheet with a thickness of 2 μm and a length of 83.0 μm is obtained. The generator can greatly simplify the illumination of light sheet imaging systems and be flexibly used for advanced biological imaging applications. 

A metasurface-on-fiber light-sheet generator for biological imaging

Grating couplers are one of the building blocks in silicon (Si) photonics. A lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform has a wide transparency window, an exceptional electro-optic performance, and a favorable mechanical property. Here we propose a grating coupler on the LNOI platform for an optical fiber to an ultra-low-loss silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has a negative thermo-optic coefficient and can be used to compensate the temperature drift of cores with positive thermo-optic coefficients. Here, a TiO2 layer on the high-aspect-ratio Si3N4 core is used for the athermal operation. The fundamental TE mode at a wavelength of 1550 nm is used as an input from the ultra-low-loss waveguide. We achieve a high directionality of 68% at the fixed wavelength. A coupling efficiency of 48% can be obtained. A 3-dB bandwidth of 60 nm from 1520 to 1580 nm is presented by the proposed grating coupler.

Efficient grating couplers for optical fibers to ultra-low-loss waveguides

In the quest to build general-purpose photonic quantum computers, fusion-based quantum computation has risen to prominence as a promising strategy. This model allows a ballistic construction of large cluster states which are universal for quantum computation, in a scalable and loss-tolerant way without feed-forward, by fusing many small n-photon entangled resource states. However, a key obstacle to this architecture lies in efficiently generating the required essential resource states on photonic chips. One such critical seed state that has not yet been achieved is the heralded three-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (3-GHZ) state. Here, we address this elementary resource gap, by reporting the first experimental realization of a heralded dual-rail encoded 3-GHZ state. Our implementation employs a low-loss and fully programmable photonic chip that manipulates six indistinguishable single photons of wavelengths in the telecommunication regime. Conditional on the heralding detection, we obtain the desired 3-GHZ state with a fidelity 0.573+-0.024. Our work marks an important step for the future fault-tolerant photonic quantum computing, leading to the acceleration of building a large-scale optical quantum computer.
