We propose a low-profile broadband planar circularly polarized folded transmitarray antenna (CPFTA) based on well-designed top and bottom metasurfaces (MSs). The top MS is employed to reflect the $x$ -polarized wave as a ground and, at the same time, to convert the $y$ -polarized wave into circularly polarized waves with arbitrary phase shifts in the operation band. A bottom MS is applied to reflect the incident wave and twist its polarization by 90°. The whole CPFTA, including the feeding source of microstrip antenna, and the top and bottom MSs can be fully integrated and fabricated using low-cost printed circuit board technology. Both simulated and measured results demonstrate significant advantages of the proposed antenna, including broad bandwidth, high gain, lower profile, planar geometry, and easy integration. The fabricated sample shows 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 23.2%, 3 dBi gain bandwidth of 11.6%, and the maximum gain of 22.8 dBi at 10.3 GHz with the antenna efficiency of 21.8%. The proposed CPFTA is promising for applications in satellite communications with circularly polarized antennas.

Folded Transmitarray Antenna With Circular Polarization Based on Metasurface

Compact high-gain antennas are highly desired in the high-speed terahertz (THz) wireless system, especially for the space limited application, such as the high-speed inter link inside the high density wireless communication base station. To this end, a 400-GHz folded reflectarray (FRA) antenna with high gain, high aperture efficiency, and compact profile is proposed in this paper. It is composed of a feed source, a single-layered reflectarray using a lithography process on quartz, and a wire-grid polarizer implemented by the printed-circuit-board technology. A 3-D printed fixture is used to assemble all parts together. In order to design accurately the proposed antenna, the THz electromagnetic properties of the supporting dielectric materials are extracted by using a THz time-domain spectrometer system. Then, a single-layered phasing element, made up of a pair of orthogonally I-shaped structures with an open square ring, is proposed and designed based on the extracted material characteristics. Both phase compensation and polarization conversion can be realized by the proposed unit cell. A reflectarray is designed by using the proposed phasing element with the conventional array synthesizing theory, and a THz grid polarizer is designed with strips on a 0.127 mm Taconic TLY-5 substrate. The THz grid is placed in front of the THz feed and the reflectarray, which is fully reflective to the feed and transparent to the reflectarray. All components of the FRA antenna have been fabricated and assembled. Experiments show that the FRA prototype has a peak gain of 33.66 dBi at 400 GHz with an aperture efficiency of 33.65%, and a 3-dB gain bandwidth of 16% (357–421 GHz).

A 400-GHz High-Gain Quartz-Based Single Layered Folded Reflectarray Antenna for Terahertz Applications

A millimeter-wave multibeam folded reflectarray antenna (FRA) with wide coverage in the azimuth plane and integrated planar primary sources for massive multiple-input multiple-output wireless communications is proposed. The substrate-integrated waveguide series-fed aperture-coupled rectangular patch antenna arrays are used as the primary sources, which makes it possible to be integrated with transceiver circuits seamlessly. A bifocal design methodology is used for improving the beam coverage and performance. A 19-beam prototype which consists of three seven-beam FRAs is designed, fabricated, and measured, enabling 30° coverage with a beam crossing level of −3 dB. The measured maximum beam gain is 25.9 dBi at 42 GHz, while the measured overall bandwidth, i.e., $\vert S_{11}\vert and 3 dB gain bandwidth, is 39–43 GHz. The proposed antenna has the advantages of easy fabrication, high gain, low cost, low profile, wide angular coverage, and co-planar integration with transceiver circuits, etc.

A Multibeam Folded Reflectarray Antenna With Wide Coverage and Integrated Primary Sources for Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Applications

Metasurfaces, orbital angular momenta (OAM), and non-diffractive Bessel beams have been attracting worldwide research. Combining the benefits of these three promising techniques, this paper proposes a metasurface-based reflective-type approach to generate a first-order Bessel beam carrying OAM. To validate this approach, a millimeter-wave metasurface is analyzed, designed, fabricated, and measured. Experimental results agree well with simulation. Moreover, this reflective-type metasurface, generating a Bessel beam with OAM, is inherently integrated with a planar feeding source in the same single-layer printed circuit board. Therefore, the proposed design features low profile, low cost, easy integration with front-end active circuits, and no alignment error between the feeding source and the metasurface.

This work presents the design and experimental validation of a dual-band fully reconfigurable circularly polarized (CP) reflectarray (RA) antenna for satellite communication applications in the Ku band. The proposed structure operates with the downlink and uplink beams at frequency bands of 10.8-11.8 GHz and 14-15.4 GHz, respectively. Simultaneous and independent beam control is provided over each of the two bands. The constituent unit cell is composed of two interleaved circular loops of different sizes to address the two frequency bands. Each loop is loaded using four varactor diodes. The loops are symmetrically loaded in the transverse plane to provide an isotropic response suitable for CP applications. A phase range of more than 300∘ is achieved in both bands as the capacitive loading varies, with an average of 2 dB loss in the lower frequency band and 3 dB loss in the higher band. In this paper, the response of the unit cell is studied through full-wave simulations and verified through quasi-optical (QO) measurements, and the fully tunable performance of the reflectarray is validated through measurements in a near-field anechoic chamber.

Dual-Band Circularly Polarized Fully Reconfigurable Reflectarray Antenna for Satellite Applications in the Ku Band

This communication presents the complete design of a circularly polarized (CP) folded reflectarray (FRA) antenna with an integrated planar structure for the first time in the open literature. To achieve circularly polarized, a printed meander-line polarizer is designed and integrated with the linearly polarized (LP) FRA. To achieve a low-profile planar structure, an integrated $2 \times 2$ planar array is designed as the feed source instead of a horn. Thus, the whole antenna, including the feed source, LPFRA, and meander-line polarizer, can be fully integrated and fabricated using low-cost printed circuit board technology. To validate the concept, a right-handed CPFRA operating in C-band is designed, fabricated, and measured. The broadside axial ratio (AR) of the proposed CPFRA is lower than 1 dB over a bandwidth from 5.22 to 5.46 GHz. In addition, the maximum gain of 22.8 dBic is obtained at 5.38 GHz with the antenna efficiency of 27%. The antenna is promising for applications in satellite communication due to advantages of low profile, easy fabrication, low cost, and high gain.
