Deasphalting of heavy crude oil by hexamethyldisiloxane: The effect of a solvent/oil ratio on the structure, composition, and properties of precipitated asphaltenes

Cubic equations of state (CEoS), such as the advanced Peng–Robinson (APR) EoS, are convenient for use in commercial simulators and have successfully fit saturation pressures and asphaltene onset points for bitumen–solvent systems using simple quadratic mixing rules. However, this approach does not accurately predict asphaltene precipitation yields. In this study, the APR EoS with several sets of asymmetric mixing rules is evaluated against saturation pressure and asphaltene yield data for n-pentane diluted bitumen. The asymmetric van der Waals, Sandoval et al., and two forms of Huron–Vidal mixing rules with an NRTL (non-random liquid theory) activity coefficient model are considered. The use of asymmetric mixing rules significantly improves the match to asphaltene yield data; however, the yields are still underpredicted at high solvent contents, and the tuning parameters that give the best match for asphaltene yield data are not predictive or easily correlated for other solvents. Measurements and NRTL modeling of liquid-liquid equilibrium of dimethyl ether/bitumen

The phase behavior of bitumen and n-butane mixtures was investigated at temperatures from 20 to 230°C and pressures from 2 to 10 MPa. The measurements included saturation pressures, compositions at the onset of the second liquid phase, and the compositions and masses of the light n-butane-rich and heavy “pitch” phases in the liquid-liquid region. The phase compositions were measured in terms of the n-butane, maltenes, and C5-asphaltenes (pentane insolubles) contents. The bitumen component yields were reported as the mass of the component in the pitch phase divided by the mass of bitumen in the feed. The onsets, yields, and phase compositions were insensitive to temperature and pressure except possibly at 2 MPa and 20°C. Phase Behavior of Mixtures of Bitumen and n-Butane

Propane and mixtures including propane as a principal component are among the leading potential candidates for co-injection along with steam for improving the process and environmental efficiency of oil sands bitumen production processes. Phase diagrams and thermophysical property data enable technologies for the development and optimization of such processes. In this work, phase behavior, phase composition, and phase densities of propane + Peace River bitumen mixtures are reported in the temperature range 303 to 393 K at pressures ranging from 1 to 6 MPa. The phase behavior of this pseudobinary mixture can be categorized as Type III according to the van Konynenburg–Scott nomenclature.
