Virtual reality technology holds great promise in improving the health and well‐being of older adults; however, this technology is associated with potential risks that may outweigh the benefits. The purpose of this systematic review is to synthesize and critique the existing literature on fully‐immersive virtual reality interventions for older adults and the associated risk of cybersickness.

In too deep? A systematic literature review of fully-immersive virtual reality and cybersickness among older adults.

We conducted an umbrella review of virtual reality (VR) technology interventions and cognitive improvement in older adults with cognitive disorders to establish a hierarchy of evidence. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO databases from database creation to February 2023. We included meta-analyses relevant to our study objectives for the overall review. We assessed the methodological quality according to AMSTAR2, and we used the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) method to assess the credibility of the evidence. This overall review was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42023423063). We identified six meta-analyses that included 12 cognitive outcomes, but only memory (Standardized Mean Difference(SMD) = 0.27, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04 to 0.49), depression (SMD = −1.26, 95% CI: −1.8 to −0.72), and global cognition (SMD = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.66) improved through the VR technology intervention. Using the 95% prediction interval (PI) results, we found that VR technology did not significantly affect the cognitive abilities of people with cognitive decline despite increasing the subject size. We conclude that the VR technology intervention improved only specific cognitive abilities. 

Efficacy of virtual reality technology interventions for cognitive and mental outcomes in older people with cognitive disorders: An umbrella review comprising meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials

The application of AI in geriatric healthcare has become a revolutionary and essential solution to tackling the problems faced by older people. An important step toward providing patient-centered and cost-effective treatment, the integration of AI in geriatric healthcare will ultimately enhance the standard of life for older people. This chapter is a systematic review of the rapidly developing field of AI applications in geriatric healthcare. It provides a thorough analysis of the impact and potential of AI technologies in addressing the healthcare needs of the aging population. The review was conducted using PRISMA framework. Thirty-three articles were considered for final review from which five themes were deduced. The study will facilitate the development of relevant and inclusive solutions for healthcare of older individuals and hasten the possibility of greater wellbeing and inclusion of older adults in the technological innovativeness of the healthcare facilities. 

A Systematic Review of the Role of Gerontechnology and AI in Revolutionizing the Wellbeing Landscape for Aging Adults

This study aimed to investigate the usability and acceptability of an innovative dementia educational program utilizing Spherical Video-based Virtual Reality (SVVR) for people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study adopted a qualitative research method, collecting data through semi-structured, in-depth interviews for user experience analysis. The researchers also conducted observations of their interaction with the VR device to get further insight into the program's usability. The findings indicated that the users believed the program was user-friendly, enjoyable, immersive, and informative. Furthermore, they expressed a willingness to utilize VR again for health education and recommended its use to others.

User Experience Evaluation of a Spherical Video-based Virtual Reality Dementia Educational Program among Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Objective. Full immersive virtual reality (VR) technology shows potential for reducing the risks of falls in older adults. There is yet little evidence to support the usability and acceptance on using VR technology application in community aged care service. The study reports on research that aims to address that gap by evaluating the usefulness and acceptance of using an innovative VR application among Chinese older adults from Hong Kong. Methods. A single-arm exploratory study was conducted to evaluate how the participants experienced the use of a fully immersive cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE) VR program on fall prevention. Thirty-one participants were recruited by convenience sampling based on their fall concerns and potential risk of falls. The participants completed 16 training sessions over eight weeks using the VR CAVE application. They were asked to complete a VR usability questionnaire (HK-version) based on the Technology Acceptance Model and previous research, and they took fall risk assessments at the pretest, posttest, and follow-up. Results. The participants’ group significantly showed improvements in reducing the risk factors of falls including balance, functional mobility, walking speed, and fear of falling after VR intervention. Perceived usefulness (PU), perceived enjoyment (PE), user experience (UE), and intention to use (IU) had an overall significant change at different time points. These are important factors to influence the participants’ acceptance of the use of VR technology applications. Perceived ease of use (PEOU) and social norms (SNs) had an inconsistent result, and some items had low validity. The findings indicated a positive training effect on fall prevention and high acceptance of the adoption of the VR technology application. Conclusion. This study supports the growing evidence on the usefulness and acceptance of using full immersive VR training on fall prevention among Chinese older adults. They perceived that the VR CAVE application was useful and innovative as an effective fall prevention training. Technically, the application of VR CAVE technology faces many challenges and is not easily manageable under COVID-19 restrictions and the limitation on technological adaptation for older adults. However, investment in full immersive VR technology application is supported for future adoption in aged care and rehabilitation services.
