Objective: Meta-analysis was used to quantitatively examine the effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Health-Promoting Exercise (TCE) as an adjuvant therapy for drug use disorders and rehabilitation based on previously published studies. Methods: Potential literature was retrieved by searching eight electronic databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure [CNKI], Wanfang, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, China Biology Medicine [CBM], PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and EBSCOhost) from January 2000 to May 2021, as well as through manual searches, including email. These literature reports comprised randomized, controlled trial studies and nonrandomized, controlled trial studies assessing the effects of TCE intervention on the physical and psychological (mental) health of drug addicts. The quality and bias risk of each study were assessed using the Cochrane bias risk assessment tool. The RevMan5.3 statistical software was employed to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies, and sensitivity and subgroup analyses using the Stata16.0 MP software were performed to explore the sources of heterogeneity among the data. This study is registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021254124). Results: Data from 14 studies (1094 individuals with drug abuse) meeting the inclusion criteria were extracted for meta-analysis. Compared to the control group, TCE intervention induced significant improvements in the systolic blood pressure (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.42, p < 0.05), diastolic blood pressure (SMD = -0.34, p < 0.05), one-leg stand with eyes closed (SMD = 0.74, p < 0.05), Symptom Check List (SMD = -0.42, p < 0.05), anxiety scale (self-rating anxiety scale/STI) (SMD = -0.49, p < 0.05), and depression scale (self-rating depression scale/Beck Depression Inventory/Hamilton Depression Rating Scale for Depression) (SMD = -0.37, p < 0.05). Sensitivity and subgroup analyses of the individual outcome indicators with high heterogeneity (I2 ≥ 50%, p < 0.10) were performed to further explore the source of heterogeneity. The results of the sensitivity analysis showed that, after removing studies one by one, the heterogeneity of the data remained high (I2 > 50), and the difference of synthetic overall effect did not change (p < 0.05), indicating that the sensitivity was low and that the results were robust and reliable. The results of the subgroup analysis results indicated that the gender of the participants and the drug type were the sources of heterogeneity. Conclusion: As an effective mind-body movement intervention, long-term TCE is beneficial to improving the physical and mental health of drug addicts. The specific intervention methods are dependent on the gender of the addict and the drug type, and longer intervention times yielded greater impacts on their physical health.

This article provides a comprehensive review of the progress in the treatment and care of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which is a common disease in the field of otolaryngology. In recent years, the incidence of SNHL has been on the rise due to factors such as fast-paced lifestyles, work pressure, and environmental noise pollution, which have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients. Therefore, the study of the treatment and care of SNHL remains a hot topic in the medical community. Despite significant advances in this field, there are still some challenges and limitations. For example, there is currently no single method that can completely cure SNHL, and the effectiveness of treatment may vary significantly among individuals. In addition, due to the complex etiology of SNHL, the prognosis of patients may vary greatly, requiring the development of personalized treatment plans and care strategies. To address these challenges, continuous research is needed to explore new treatment methods and care models to improve the quality of life of patients. In addition, there is a need for health education programs for the general public to raise awareness of SNHL and promote preventive measures to reduce its incidence. The ultimate goal is to ensure the sustainable development of the field of SNHL treatment and care, thus ensuring the health and well-being of affected individuals.

Research progress on the treatment and nursing of sensorineural hearing loss

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has manifested with respiratory symptoms and a spectrum of extra-pulmonary complications. Emerging evidence suggests potential impacts on the auditory and vestibular systems, but the extent and nature of these effects in recovered individuals remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and severity of vertigo and hearing impairment in individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 and to identify potential risk factors associated with these sensory symptoms. A cohort of 250 recovered COVID-19 patients was assessed. Standardized questionnaires, including the Dizziness Handicap Inventory and the Vertigo Symptom Scale, were used to evaluate vertigo. Hearing assessment was conducted using pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, tympanometry, and oto-acoustic emissions testing. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between COVID-19 severity and the occurrence of sensory symptoms, controlling for confounding variables such as age and comorbidities. Of the participants, 10% reported vertigo, varying severity. Hearing assessments revealed that most participants had normal hearing, with an average speech discrimination score of 94.6. Logistic regression analysis indicated a significant association between severe COVID-19 and an increased likelihood of vertigo (OR 2.11, 95% CI 1.02-4.35, P = .043) and hearing impairment (OR 3.29, 95% CI 1.60-6.78, P = .002). This study suggests a significant association between COVID-19 severity and vertigo and hearing impairment prevalence. The findings underscore the importance of sensory symptom assessment in the post-recovery phase of COVID-19, highlighting the need for comprehensive healthcare approaches to manage long-term sequelae. 

Evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on vertigo and hearing impairment: A post-recovery analysis

The Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) is the most popular and widely used questionnaire in evaluating patients with vertigo. This questionnaire has a screening version with a high correlation with DHI. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Persian DHI - Screening version (DHI-S).This cross-sectional and methodological study was conducted on 300 patients at the central vestibular clinic in Mashhad, Iran, from 2020 to 2021. First, the DHI-S was translated into Persian using the backward-forward translation method. Subsequently, the following types of validity and reliability were examined: content validity based on content validity index and content validity ratio, face validity based on impact score, construct validity based on confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency based on Cronbach's α and Ω, and test-retest stability based on intraclass correlation coefficient and smallest detectable change.The DHI-S had high content and face validity. Score 8 was selected for the cutoff point between patients and the normal group with a sensitivity of 63.67% and specificity of 96.08%. The construct validity indicated that the questionnaire is one-dimensional. The Cronbach's α and Ω for internal consistency were 0.855 and 0.851, respectively. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.981 and the smallest detectable change was 5.521.The DHI-S in the Persian language has high and acceptable psychometric properties. This questionnaire can be used in research and clinical settings. 

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Dizziness Handicap Inventory - Screening Version.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of tinnitus counseling in improving tinnitus symptoms among hearing-impaired individuals who use hearing aids and have reported difficulties due to tinnitus.Methods: Thirty participants completed the tinnitus handicap inventory (THI), the tinnitus magnitude index (TMI), and a tinnitus knowledge questionnaire both before and after tinnitus rehabilitation counseling. A tinnitogram was also assessed. The tinnitus knowledge questionnaire was customized based on a preliminary survey that identified participants’ misconceptions or specific areas of interest regarding tinnitus, enabling targeted and informative counseling.Results: THI scores showed a statistically significant decrease, from a mean of 48.16 (standard deviation [SD], 27.1) to 41.66 (SD, 25.6), with an average reduction of 6.5 points (&lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt; = 0.000). Similarly, TMI scores showed a statistically significant reduction, from a mean of 20.7 (SD, 6.1) to 19.0 (SD, 6.58), with an average decrease of 1.7 points (&lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt; = 0.01).Conclusion: The findings support the efficacy of tinnitus rehabilitation counseling in alleviating tinnitus-related discomfort among individuals who have used hearing aids for over a year. While the reduction in THI scores was statistically significant, an analysis of the minimum clinically significant difference showed that only 33% of participants exhibited clinically meaningful improvement. Future studies should explore the benefits of continuous counseling for those who do not respond to a single session. 

A Study on the Rehabilitation Effects of Tinnitus Counseling for Hearing Aid Users Who Suffer from Tinnitus

Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is a major cause of deafness. Despite the advances in systemic therapy, some cases of ISSNHL are untreated, because the exact ISSNHL aetiology is unclear. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat diseases for thousands of years and is popular and widely practiced in Asia. TCM includes guidance on a healthy lifestyle. In recent decades, the relationship between lifestyle and disease has been emphasised; an unhealthy lifestyle may lead to illnesses. Thus, this study aims to compare the efficacy of lifestyle modification based on TCM with the usual consultation of ISSNHL after failure of a 2-week systemic therapy to provide a scientific basis for clinical decisions. This study is a clinical randomised trial that involves 56 patients diagnosed with ISSNHL but who have had incomplete recovery after initial management (at least 2 weeks of routine Western medical treatment). The study is performed in accordance with the sudden hearing loss clinical guideline of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, published in 2012. Participants are randomly distributed into two groups: the healthy lifestyle modification group based on TCM and the control group (1:1 ratio). Patient follow-up lasts for 3 months. The primary outcome measure is the effective rate of hearing improvement, which is defined as the proportion of patients with at least 15 dB of improvement in the average thresholds of hearing loss frequency. The secondary outcome measures are improvements in word recognition score, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and visual analogue scale for ear blockage and dizziness. Assessments are made at baseline and after lifestyle modification for 1 and 3 months. The efficacy of healthy lifestyle modification based on a TCM programme for patients with ISSNHL with incomplete recovery after failure of initial systemic therapy is determined in this trial. Positive results will provide clinical evidence on the effects of a TCM-based healthy lifestyle, which could be recommended as salvage therapy for patients with ISSNHL. Clinical practicality of the dizziness handicap inventory for evaluating dizziness in the Mandarin Chinese-speaking population: a prospective cross-sectional analysis.

PURPOSE
The effect of hearing aids (HAs) and educational counseling (EC) or their combination on tinnitus is ambiguous. This study aimed to investigate whether the combined use of HAs and EC is more effective than EC alone on tinnitus relief.


METHOD
A total of 72 adults with chronic, bothersome tinnitus and coexisting sensorineural hearing loss completed at least 1-month and 3-month follow-up. After receiving EC and HA prescriptions, 21 participants selected to purchase HAs (i.e., the HA + EC group), whereas the remaining 51 refused to use HAs despite recommendations (i.e., the EC group). Tinnitus severity was measured by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Tinnitus Evaluation Questionnaire (TEQ), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for loudness. The primary outcome measure was THI, and tinnitus relief was defined as a 20-point or more reduction in THI. A generalized linear mixed model was used to confirm that the heterogeneity in baseline characteristics between groups did not interfere with the results.


RESULTS
The THI, TEQ, and VAS scores decreased significantly after treatments, and both groups yielded a similar trend of reduction. There were no significant differences in the incidence of tinnitus relief and time-to-event curves between the two groups. In addition, the length of follow-up did not affect treatment effectiveness.


CONCLUSION
There was insufficient evidence to support the superiority of the combined use of HA and EC for tinnitus over EC with no device.
