Carbon quantum dots (CDs) have been frequently used for broadening spectrum light response due to their superior up-conversion photoluminescence (UPPL) property and effective charge separation capacity. In this study, a novel CDs modified Z-scheme photocatalyst (CDs/g-C3N4/MoO3) was successfully constructed. The morphologies, chemical compositions, and optical properties of the prepared catalysts were investigated via a series of characterization techniques. Systematic studies indicated that the CDs/g-C3N4/MoO3 photocatalyst exhibited remarkably enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) compared to pristine g-C3N4 and MoO3/g-C3N4 composite. Doping 0.5% CDs resulted in the highest TC degradation rate, which was 3.5 and 46.2 times higher than that of MoO3/g-C3N4 and g-C3N4, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of CDs/g-C3N4/MoO3 can be attributed to the synergistic effects of CD properties (i.e., excellent UPPL activity and high charge separation capacity and the Z-scheme heterojunction structure). Reactive species scavenging experiments revealed that photogenerated holes are the main active species during the photocatalytic process. Possible photocatalytic degradation pathways of TC were proposed through the identification of intermediates using HPLC-MS and the frontier electron density calculation. Experimental results showed that the newly fabricated Z-scheme CDs/g-C3N4/MoO3 is a promising photocatalyst for the removal of TC from the environment.

The properties and applications of molybdenum oxides are reviewed in depth. Molybdenum is found in various oxide stoichiometries, which have been employed for different high-value research and commercial applications. The great chemical and physical characteristics of molybdenum oxides make them versatile and highly tunable for incorporation in optical, electronic, catalytic, bio, and energy systems. Variations in the oxidation states allow manipulation of the crystal structure, morphology, oxygen vacancies, and dopants, to control and engineer electronic states. Despite this overwhelming functionality and potential, a definitive resource on molybdenum oxide is still unavailable. The aim here is to provide such a resource, while presenting an insightful outlook into future prospective applications for molybdenum oxides.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal oxide and chalcogenide (TMO&C)-based photocatalysts have recently attracted significant attention for addressing the current worldwide challenges of energy shortage and environmental pollution. The ultrahigh surface area and unconventional physiochemical, electronic and optical properties of 2D TMO&Cs have been demonstrated to facilitate photocatalytic applications. This review provides a concise overview of properties, synthesis methods and applications of 2D TMO&C-based photocatalysts. Particular attention is paid on the emerging strategies to improve the abilities of light harvesting and photoinduced charge separation for enhancing photocatalytic performances, which include elemental doping, surface functionalization as well as heterojunctions with semiconducting and conductive materials. The future opportunities regarding the research pathways of 2D TMO&C-based photocatalysts are also presented.

Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Oxide and Chalcogenide-Based Photocatalysts

Here, we demonstrate a simple method to exfoliate layered molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) crystallites to give multilayer MoO3 nanosheets dispersed in solvents. Exfoliation is achieved by sonicating MoO3 powder in the presence of suitable solvents followed by centrifugation to remove undispersed material. This procedure works well in a range of solvents with Hildebrand solubility parameters close to 21 MPa1/2 and is consistent with the predictions of classical solubility theory. We have fully optimized this process and demonstrated methods to separate the resultant nanosheets by size. Raman spectroscopy suggests the exfoliation process does not damage the MoO3. This is supported by measurements showing that the reaggregated nanosheets display very similar photoluminescence to bulk MoO3. However, the dispersed nanosheets had distinctly different photoluminescence, indicating a decoupling of the monolayers on exfoliation. Production of Molybdenum Trioxide Nanosheets by Liquid Exfoliation and Their Application in High-Performance Supercapacitors

Single crystalline MoO3 nanobelts with width of 200–300 nm and the length up to several tens of micrometres were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method and characterized. Based on time- and temperature-dependent experiments, a solid–solution–solid transformation mechanism was proposed for the formation of crystalline MoO3 nanobelts. The as-prepared MoO3 nanobelts were used as a photocatalyst to degrade methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation and demonstrated a dramatic activity, indicating that the as-prepared MoO3 nanobelts were promising candidates for the photodegradation of organic dyes. A self-sensitization photocatalytic mechanism was suggested based on the experimental results.
