A crucial and desirable objective in the wastewater treatment field is to design photocatalysts that can efficiently remove emerging pollutants while also being environmental-friendly. This work proposed a novel graphene quantum dots/BiOBr (GQDs/BiOBr) heterojunction with strong interfacial interactions through a hydrothermal method. Consequently, in just 140 min, RhB was almost entirely photodegraded by the GQDs/BiOBr and a rate constant 3.26 times higher than pristine BiOBr. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of GQDs/BiOBr was primarily associated with strengthened visible light absorption and improved charge transfer efficiency, as demonstrated through both experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Furthermore, with only a minor alteration in the surface chemical structure, GQDs/BiOBr retained strong photocatalytic ability after five cycles (RhB degradation of 85.17 %). The construction mechanism of S-scheme heterojunction, photogenerated carriers' transfer and photocatalytic mechanism were deduced by DFT calculation. The results derived from the radical trapping experiments as well as electron spin resonance (ESR) indicated that the presence of h+ and ·O2− were crucial for the degradation process of RhB. Finally, possible degradation intermediates had been identified and pathways of RhB were proposed, and the results of the toxicity assessment showed that ecotoxicity could be reduced or even eliminated. This effective and reliable visible-light-driven photocatalyst may be applied to build a photocatalytic degradation system for the environmentally friendly and energy-efficient removal of organic pollutants. 

Visible light driven S-scheme GQDs/BiOBr heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B and mechanism insight

Bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6)-based photocatalytic materials have become a research hotspot in photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental remediation due to their low-toxicity, abundant, ease of preparation, chemical stability as well as excellent structural, electrical and optical properties. However, the main disadvantage of pure semiconductors, including Bi2WO6, is associated with the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, which leads to low activity. As one of the approaches to solve this challenge, the preparation of heterojunctions based on Bi2WO6 has been proven as the most efficient, reliable and promising strategy. This critical review explores the use of Bi2WO6-based heterojunction photocatalysts with a focus on Z-scheme and S-scheme composites for environmental remediation, including air purification and wastewater treatment. Moreover, the challenges and opportunities are considered to further insight into developing new photocatalytic materials with their future commercialization on an industrial scale. Some new approaches for further improving Bi2WO6-based photocatalysts, such as optimization of preparation method, hetero- and homo-substitution of A-site or B-site (atomic regulation) and the use of support matrix, are highlighted. 

Potential of Bi2WO6-based heterojunction photocatalysts for environmental remediation

The problem of antibiotic contamination resulting from pharmaceutical industries and hospitals always puts humans and the ecosystem at serious risk. The search for novel and superior approaches to eliminating these contaminants is still the highest priority for researchers. In this work, a simple two-step approach was employed to design a novel Bi2Sn2O7/CeO2 nano-hybrid in a core-shell heterostructure. A number of sophisticated analyses were carried out to characterize and identify the structure, morphology, and catalytic behavior of nanomaterials. The optimized Bi2Sn2O7/CeO2-20 recorded outstanding photocatalytic capacity by oxidation of 83 %, 73.5 %, 92.9 %, 87.4 %, and 90.3 % of ciprofloxacin (CIP), enrofloxacin (ENR), tetracycline (TC), amoxicillin (AMX), and levofloxacin (LEV) within 50 min of visible-light irradiation. Moreover, the kinetic studies of Bi2Sn2O7/CeO2-20 exhibit the optimal reaction capacity with a CIP photodegradation constant (k) of 0.03414 min− 1, which is about 2.77 and 3.17 folds greater than that of bare Bi2Sn2O7 and CeO2, respectively. The photostability tests proved the good applicability of Bi2Sn2O7/CeO2-20 in CIP oxidation through five degradation runs. The Bi2Sn2O7/CeO2 hybrid manifested boosted charge separation behavior in the S-type system. The XPS spectra demonstrated the creation of the electric field in the S-type photocatalytic mechanism, while the trapping tests indicated the ability of Bi2Sn2O7/CeO2 to generate both •OH and •O2− radicals. This study might contribute to accelerating the progress of innovation and scientific advancement to discover powerful photocatalysts with superior capabilities for addressing environmental violations in sustainable approaches. 

Rational design of novel 0D/0D Bi2Sn2O7/CeO2 in the core-shell nanostructure for boosting the photocatalytic decomposition of antibiotics in wastewater: S-type-based mechanism

The construction of an S-scheme heterostructure is considered as a promising strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance. Herein, a three-dimensional Bi5O7I (BOI) microsphere decorated with Bi2Sn2O7 (BSO) nanoparticles was prepared for the first time via a simple ultrasonic-assisted electrostatic self-assembly strategy and used for the degradation of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. 3 wt% Bi2Sn2O7/Bi5O7I has the highest degradation activity (93.7 %), with an apparent rate constant of 0.0848 min−1, which is 2.55 times that of the original Bi5O7I (0.0333 min−1). Moreover, the optimal binary heterojunction photocatalyst has good reusability and universal applicability. The results of cyclic voltammetry tests clarify that the optimal photocatalyst can provide more surface reactive sites. The results of radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance indicate that holes (h+) and superoxide radicals are the main active radicals in the degradation process of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. Photoelectrochemical and photoluminescence confirm that 3 wt% Bi2Sn2O7/Bi5O7I composites exhibit the highest separation rate of photogenerated carriers. Finally, based on the results of experimental studies and theoretical calculations, the S-scheme charge transfer path on the Bi2Sn2O7/Bi5O7I composite is determined. This work provides a new perspective on how to design high-performance S-scheme bismuth oxyhalide-based heterojunction photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Introduction There is no guideline for the treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) in pediatric patients with titin (TTN) gene mutation and heart failure. We explored the feasibility of using brentuximab vedotin (BV) plus chemotherapy without anthracyclines to treat one pediatric HL patient with TTN mutation. Case presentation A 5-year and 7-month male patient was admitted to the hospital due to high fever and shortness of breath. He was diagnosed with stage IV IVB high-risk Hodgkin’s lymphoma (lymphocyte-depleted type) at admission. Echocardiography showed that the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was 27%. The gene sequencing revealed a pathogenic variant in the TTN gene. Due to the risk of cardiotoxicity of anthracycline, he received 6 cycles of chemotherapy (no anthracyclines), 4 cycles of them plus BV with dosing 1.8 mg/kg, q3w. The tumor was reduced by 77% after 2 cycles of BV and 4 cycles of chemotherapy. At the end of 4 cycles of BV and six courses of chemotherapy, with complete remission achieved, the tumor was reduced by 85%. After 11 months of follow-up, the patient was still in complete remission with no adverse events reported, and his LVEF improved to 62%. Conclusion The combination of BV with chemotherapy is effective and well-tolerated for pediatric HL patients with TTN gene mutation.

Complete remission of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in a pediatric patient with TTN gene mutation treated with brentuximab vedotin combined chemotherapy without anthracyclines: A case report

Background: Various potential effect of drugs on alleviating diseases by regulating intestinal microbiome as well as the pharmaceutical excipients on gut microbiota has been revealed. However, the interaction between them is rarely investigated. Methods: Histological analysis, immunohistochemistry analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis, RT-qPCR, and 16S rRNA analysis were utilized to explore the effect mechanism of the five excipients including hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) F4M, Eudragit (EU) S100, chitosan (CT), pectin (PT), and rheum officinale polysaccharide (DHP) on berberine (BBR) to cure UC. Results: The combined BBR with PT and DHP group exhibited better therapeutic efficacy of UC with significantly increased colon length, and decreased hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) scores than other groups. Furthermore, the expression of tight junction ZO-1 and occludin in colon tissue were upregulated, and claudin-2 was downregulated. Ultimately, the serum content of tumor necrosis (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 was decreased. Moreover, the combined BBR with PT significantly promoted the restoration of gut microbiota. The relative abundance of Firmicutes and Lactobacillus was significantly increased by the supplement of PT and DHP, and the relative abundance of Proteobacteria was downregulated. Conclusions: Our study may provide a new perspective that the selection of pharmaceutical excipients could be a crucial factor affecting the drugs’ therapeutic efficiency outcome.
