Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is vital for clean and renewable energy technologies, which require no fossil fuel but catalysts. Platinum (Pt) is the best-known catalyst for ORR. However, its high cost and scarcity have severely hindered renewable energy devices (e.g., fuel cells) for large-scale applications. Recent breakthroughs in carbon-based metal-free electrochemical catalysts (C-MFECs) show great potential for earth-abundant carbon materials as low-cost metal-free electrocatalysts towards ORR in acidic media. This article provides a focused, but critical review on C-MFECs for ORR in acidic media with an emphasis on advances in the structure design and synthesis, fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationship and electrocatalytic mechanisms, and their applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Current challenges and future perspectives in this emerging field are also discussed.

A Versatile Approach to Boost Oxygen Reduction of Fe-N4 Sites by Controllably Incorporating Sulfur Functionality

Aqueous zinc ion hybrid capacitors (aZHCs) are of great potential for large-scale energy storage and flexible wearable devices, of which the specific capacity and energy density need to be further enhanced for practical applications. Herein, a urea-mediated foaming strategy is reported for the efficient synthesis of monoliths consisting of nitrogen-enriched mesoporous carbon nanosheets (NPCNs) by prefoaming drying a solution made of polyvinylpyrrolidone, zinc nitrate, and urea at low temperatures, foaming and annealing at high temperatures, and subsequent acid etching. NPCNs have a large lateral size of ≈40 µm, thin thickness of ≈55 nm, abundant micropores and mesopores (≈3.8 nm), and a high N-doping value of 9.7 at.%. The NPCNs as the cathode in aZHCs provide abundant zinc storage sites involving both physical and chemical adsorption/desorption of Zn2+  ions, and deliver high specific capacities of 262 and 115 mAh g-1 at 0.2 and 10 A g-1 , and a remarkable areal capacity of ≈0.5 mAh cm-2  with a mass loading of 5.3 mg cm-2 , outperforming most carbon cathodes reported thus far. Moreover, safe and flexible NPCNs based quasi-solid-state devices are fabricated, which can withstand drilling and mechanical bending, suggesting their potential applications in wearable devices.

Urea-Mediated Monoliths Made of Nitrogen-Enriched Mesoporous Carbon Nanosheets for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc Ion Hybrid Capacitors.

With the rapid development of anion-exchange membrane technology and adequate supply of high-performance non-noble metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in alkaline media, the commercialization of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) become possible. However, the kinetics of the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in AEMFCs is significantly decreased compared to the HOR in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Therefore, it is urgent to develop HOR catalysts with low price, high activity, and robust stability. However, comprehensive timely reviews on this specific subject do not exist enough yet and it is necessary to update reported major achievements and to point out future investigation directions. In this review, the current reaction mechanisms on HOR are summarized and deeply understood. The debates between the mechanisms are greatly harmonized. Recent advances in developing highly active and stable electrocatalysts for the HOR are reviewed. Moreover, the side reaction control is for the first time systematically introduced. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities in the field of HOR catalysis are outlined.
