This paper describes a new design of a relativistic Cherenkov oscillator with strong modulation of the e-beam current at the input of two-sectioned slow-wave structure, as well as numerical and experimental results on generation of few gigawatt-level $X$ -band pulses with pulse duration of up to 35 ns. Due to special phase shift between two sections and electrodynamic coupling between $E_{01}$ surface wave and $E_{02}$ volume mode, the first one is locked at the upper boundary of the passband and the second one gains more transparency. An electron beam can interact simultaneously with two waves with higher power conversion efficiencies, which in simulations amount up to 47% and 30% for high (~4 T) and low (~1 T) guiding magnetic fields, correspondingly. The tests of the geometry optimized in simulations were performed on the base of SINUS-7 high-current electron accelerator in the diode voltage range of 400–850 kV and current from 7 to 16 kA. The repeated and full-pulsewidth generation of about 1.5-GW microwave power is achieved only in the low magnetic field. The pulse shortening and the mode competition took place in the strong magnetic field. The results are considered as preliminary for creation of the efficient relativistic millimeter-wave oscillators at magnetic fields below the cyclotron resonance.

Two-Wave Cherenkov Oscillator With Moderately Oversized Slow-Wave Structure

An overmoded coaxial millimeter-wave generator with high power capacity and pure transverse electric and magnetic (TEM) mode output is designed and presented, by using a kind of coaxial slow wave structure (SWS) with large transversal dimension and small distance between inner and outer conductors. The generator works in dual-mode operation mechanism. The electron beam synchronously interacts with 7π/8 mode of quasi-TEM, at the meanwhile exchanges energy with 3π/8 mode of TM01. The existence of TM01 mode, which is traveling wave, not only increases the beam-wave interaction efficiency but also improves the extraction efficiency. The large transversal dimension of coaxial SWS makes its power capacity higher than that of other reported millimeter-wave devices and the small distance between inner and outer conductors allows only two azimuthally symmetric modes to coexist. The converter after the SWS guarantees the mode purity of output power. Particle-in-cell simulation shows that when the diode voltage is 400 kV and beam current is 3.8 kA, the generation of microwave at 32.26 GHz with an output power of 611 MW and a conversion efficiency of 40% is obtained. The power percentage carried by TEM mode reaches 99.7% in the output power.

A dual-mode operation overmoded coaxial millimeter-wave generator with high power capacity and pure transverse electric and magnetic mode output

This paper presents preliminary research on a V-band overmoded Cerenkov generator with dual-cavity reflector operating in a low guiding magnetic field. It is found that the fluctuation of the electron envelope in the low guiding magnetic field can be predicted using an equivalent coaxial model of a foilless diode, and a dual-cavity reflector based on the model matching method can provide strong reflection at the front end of the overmoded structures so that any microwave power that leaks into the diode region can be effectively suppressed. Numerical simulations indicate that the control of the beam envelope and the use of the dual-cavity reflector ease generator operation in the low guiding magnetic field. In the experimental research, the fluctuation of the annular electron beam with the outer radius of 7.5 mm measures approximately 0.7 mm, which is in good agreement with the theoretical results. The disturbance caused by power leaking from the overmoded slow wave structure is eliminated by the dual-cavity reflector. With accurate fabrication and assembly processes, an operating frequency of 61.6 GHz is attained by the fifth harmonic heterodyne method, and the output power is measured to be approximately 123 MW by the far-field measurement method at a diode voltage of 445 kV, a beam current of 4.45 kA, and under a guiding magnetic field of 1.45 T. The output mode is measured using an array of neon flash bulbs, and the pulse shortening phenomenon is both observed and analyzed.

Preliminary research on overmoded high-power millimeter-wave Cerenkov generator with dual-cavity reflector in low guiding magnetic field

To accurately measure the performance of overmoded devices used in high-power microwave systems, a novel structure that effectively converts the TE10 mode in a rectangular waveguide to a high-purity TM01 mode in a circular waveguide is proposed. The circular TM01 mode is excited by a hybrid rectangular E-T waveguide structure, which uses a circular waveguide as the E element. Convex slots loaded at the rectangular waveguide, axially symmetric about the cylindrical waveguide, are introduced to suppress the competing lower order TE11 mode. A tuning stub loaded at the rectangular short wall is used to increase the frequency tuning range. The scattering matrix technique was used to study the mode converter along with the microwave network analysis method using some generalizations of the input port reflection and conversion efficiency, which were verified by the numerical full-wave simulation. Based on the theoretical analysis, an X-band TM01 mode generator is designed and measured. Low-power tests show that, when the length of the tuner increases from 5.7 to 11.7 mm, a wide frequency tuning range of ~500 MHz is obtained with a conversion efficiency of ~99%. Measured results and the theoretical analysis are in good agreement.

High-Efficiency, Broadband Converter From A Rectangular Waveguide TE 10 Mode to A Circular Waveguide TM 01 Mode for Overmoded Device Measurement

A Ka -band relativistic backward-wave oscillator (RBWO) operating in the TM02 mode is researched theoretically and experimentally in this article. The RBWO can overcome the disadvantages of a traditional RBWO, such as small size and low-power capability, when the operating frequency goes to the millimeter-wave band and is more suitable for adopting a lower-guiding magnetic field. The mode-selection mechanisms in the RBWO ensure that the electron beam interacts with the negative first-harmonic wave of the TM02 mode efficiently. The particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation preformed the 490-MW output power at a frequency of 29.3 GHz. The experiment was done on the SINUS-881 accelerator, and with the diode voltage and current at 580 kV and 3.6 kA, respectively, at a guiding magnetic field of 1 T, the RBWO produced a microwave pulse with a power as high as 360 MW at a central frequency of 29.3 GHz. The dependence of microwave power on diode voltage coincides with PIC simulation. Pulse shortening as well as severe bombarding damage of the electron beam on the postcascaded resonators were observed. By increasing the guiding magnetic field to 1.26 T, the pulsewidth was evidently improved.

Research on an Overmoded $Ka$ -Band RBWO Operating in TM 02 Mode With Low-Guiding Magnetic Field

By combining the Cerenkov-type generator with the cascaded resonators, this paper proposes a Ka-band relativistic backward wave oscillator operating under the guide magnetic field 1.0 T with high power handling capability and high conversion efficiency. It is found that TM02 can be selected as the operation mode in order to increase the power handling capability and provide sufficient coupling with the electron beam. In slow wave structure (SWS), ripples composed of semicircle on top of the rectangle enhance the wave-beam interaction and decrease the intensity of the electric field on the metallic surface. Taking advantage of the resonator cascades, the output power and the conversion efficiency are promoted greatly. The front cascaded resonators efficiently prevent the power generated in SWS from leaking into the diode region, and quicken the startup of the oscillation due to the premodulation of the beam. However, the post cascade slightly postpones the startup because of the further energy extraction from the electron beam. The numerical simulation shows that generation with power 514 MW and efficiency 41% is obtained under the diode voltage 520 kV and current 2.4 kA. And the microwave with the pure frequency spectrum of 29.35 GHz radiates in the pure TM01 mode.

Effect of resonators at both ends of the slow wave structure on the operation of the TM02 mode relativistic backward wave oscillator is studied. The front resonators effectively reflect the microwave back and quicken the oscillation startup by beam premodulation. The rear resonators slightly postpones the startup because of the further energy extraction. With the help of the resonators, the conversion efficiency are promoted greatly.
