In transportation light metal matrix composites (L-MMCs) are used increasingly due to their improved creep resistance even at higher application temperatures. Therefore, the creep behavior and failure mechanisms of creep loaded particle reinforced L-MMCs have been investigated intensively. Until now, creep damage analyses are usually performed ex situ by means of interrupted creep experiments. However, ex situ methods do not provide sufficient information about the evolution of creep damage. Hence, in situ synchrotron X-ray 3D-µ-tomography investigations were carried out enabling time and space resolved studies of the damage mechanisms in particle-reinforced titanium- and aluminum-based metal matrix composites (MMCs) during creep. The 3D-data were visualized and existing models were applied, specifying the phenomenology of the damage in the early and late creep stages. During the early stages of creep, the damage is determined by surface diffusion in the matrix or reinforcement fracture, both evolving proportionally to the macroscopic creep curve. In the late creep stages the damage mechanisms are quite different: In the Al-MMC, the identified mechanisms persist proportional to creep strain. In contrast, in the titanium-MMC, a changeover to the mechanism of dislocation creep evolving super-proportionally to creep strain occurs.

Coupling analysis on controlling mechanisms for creep of Al-Fe-Ni alloy

A liquid metallurgical stir casting route was utilized for developing aluminium alloy (7075) matrix composites blended with fluctuating wt% of silicon nitride (Si3N4), tantalum carbide (TaC), and titanium (Ti) for sake of generating a profitable composite with enhanced properties. The physical, microstructural, and mechanical characteristics such as density, high temperature tensile, fatigue, and time-dependent creep experiments were conducted and evaluated. SEM microstructural examinations were performed on the composite samples and proved that there was a good interfacial bonding and uniform dissemination among the reinforcement particulates in the matrix. Physical characteristics were analysed and the outcomes showed that AA7075 blended with 1 wt% TaC, 8 wt% Si3N4, and 0.5 wt% Ti proved higher experimental and theoretical densities of 3.2464 g/cm3 and 3.3038 g/cm3, respectively, with maximum porosity of 1.7758%. At 30°C, the tensile properties of the developed MMCs showed improved ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 137.64 N/mm2. Beyond 100°C, AA7075 reinforced with 0.75 wt% TaC, 6 wt% Si3N4, and 1 wt% Ti proved to have a higher strength of 232.17 N/mm2. Fatigue properties of the developed MMCs discovered were found to be reformed when proportionate to the base alloy by operating at 14 × 103 cycles at the stress of 42.72 MPa. Time-dependent creep analysis of the developed MMCs found to be advanced due to the addition of tough ceramic particulates.

ABSTRACT The A7075 alloy metal matrix composites with various micro and nano particle reinforcements were enhanced matrix materials properties for applications in airbus, construction, automotive and marine industries. However, A7075 alloy metal matrix composites fabricated through molten-metallurgy route via stir-casting technique. Typically, micro and nanoparticle carbide, oxide, bromide, fibre and clay reinforcements effectively enhanced the microstructural observation, mechanical and several wear properties. The improved microstructural analysis like particle dispersion, interface bonding, particle size, generated precipitates, and elements was examined by SEM, EBSD, XRD, EDS SEM and AFM, microscopy. The mechanical behaviour of nanoparticle reinforced A7075 alloy matrix composites was superior as compared to micro reinforcements. Similarly, the tribological properties such as sliding, abrasive coarse and erosive wear behaviour were improved due to hybrid reinforcements into A7075 metal matrix composite; also this correlated with the obtained results and conclusions were drawn.

A7075 alloy reinforced metal matrix composites fabricated through stircasting route: a review

In the present work, the in-situ TiB2/Al12Si4Cu2NiMg (denoted as ‘Al-12Si’) composites were successful synthesized through the salt-metal reaction route. The influences of weight fraction (0, 4, and 9 wt.%) and heat treatment (T5 and T7) on the tensile creep deformation were studied at ≥623 K under constant load in air. At the investigated temperature and stress condition, TiB2 particles increased creep deformation resistance, as compared to the unreinforced alloy, while the composites presented similar strength when the weight fraction of reinforcement increased from 4% to 9%. It was found that the steady-state creep rate was lower in the 4 wt.% TiB2/Al-12Si composite (T5), as compared with that in the 4 wt.% TiB2/Al-12Si composite (T7). The result has been rationalized by using the load-partitioning model and relative to the evolution of the rigid phase. The creep deformation of the 4 wt.% TiB2/Al-12Si composite was controlled by the climb of dislocations in the aluminum alloy matrix.
