Review on epoxy polymers and its composites as a potential anticorrosive coatings for carbon steel in 3.5% NaCl solution: Computational approaches

With the rapid development of the marine industry, biofouling and surface corrosion of underwater equipment have become a major issue. Traditional antifouling or anticorrosion coatings with a single function cannot meet the current requirements. Recent developments in materials science and synthesis techniques have brought new opportunities and challenges in the field of integrated antifouling and anticorrosion coatings (IAACs). In this review, the mechanisms of biofouling and corrosion are introduced to help readers understand how their negative impact can be mitigated. Most of the IAACs are designed by combining antifouling and anticorrosion units into one coating, while several IAACs disobey the mentioned design principle since they have inherent antifouling and anticorrosion functions. This review highlights the recently developed IAACs, including polyaniline-based coatings, copper/amorphous carbon coatings, polydopamine/polymer brushes, amphiphilic polymers, endospore-loaded sol–gel coatings, hydrophobic/corrosion inhibitor coatings, nanocomposites, and bioinspired coatings. These emerging IAACs have been introduced in the last decade and may not yet be mature in practical applications and commercialization; therefore, their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Finally, the future development of IAACs is discussed. We expect that this review will not only help readers understand the design principle of IAACs but also contribute to their development.

Synthetic materials used in a wide range of applications are prone to damage in the form of cracking/microcracking Catastrophic failure of the materials may occur due to the growth and merging of the microcracks, which results in the reduction of the service life of the materials To avoid these problems and increase the service life, early detection and mending of the microcracks are extremely important Self-healing materials can be utilized in these cases, which have the capability not only to detect cracks early but also to repair cracks automatically These materials will also have the potential to improve material reliability, extend the service life, reduce replacement costs, and improve product safety Due to these attractive features, numerous research studies are conducted every year on the development of self-healing systems This paper summarizes the latest progress in the design and fabrication techniques of self-healing materials through a wide range of materials, including metals, ceramics, concrete, and polymer composites Based on recent research, this article provides an overview of different chemistries and approaches involved in preparing self-healing composites Comparative healing efficiency and related fabrication methods are tabulated Finally, existing problems, gaps, and challenges, and future research directions and opportunities for commercial applications are highlighted

GO-modified double-walled polyurea microcapsules/epoxy composites for marine anticorrosive self-healing coating

Polyurea microcapsules with Ethylenediamine (EDA) as the core material were synthesized. A set of characterization methods, including optical and scanning electron microscopy (OM and SEM), the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to confirm the microcapsule morphology and chemical structures. The influence of emulsifier content and stirring rate on size and morphology of the microcapsules was investigated, and the self-healing performance of EDA-Polyurea microcapsule/epoxy coatings was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The results showed that the microcapsules obtained had good spherical shape with a mean diameter of 0.54-0.70 μm. Compared with pure core material, the microcapsule showed excellent thermostability, and the content of core materials was up to 56.00 wt%. The epoxy coating with 5.0 wt% EDA-Polyurea microcapsules achieved average corrosion resistance efficiencies of 90.00%, significantly enhancing the capability of the scratched coating to resist external corrosion.
