Realization of single-photon transport in one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguides via phase control

We investigate theoretically single photon transport in one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a pair of cavities, which are denoted by the first cavity and the auxiliary cavity. Two cases with no atom and one atom embedded in the first cavity are discussed. The Fano dips in the transmission spectrum and locations of transparency window are calculated. When no atom is embedded in the first cavity, there exists a transparency window under the condition that the first cavity and the auxiliary cavity are not resonant. The locations of the transparency window and Fano line type depend strongly on the eigen frequency of the auxiliary cavity and the coupling strength between the auxiliary cavity and the waveguide. When one atom is embedded in the first cavity, we show that the transparency window exists even though the first cavity, the atom and the auxiliary cavity are resonant. The Fano line type is strongly dependent on the eigen frequency of the auxiliary cavity and the coupling strength. Our results have potential applications in design of quantum devices at the level of single photon, such as single photon switch and single photon routers.

We demonstrate theoretically that waveguide-coupled cavities with embedded two-level emitters can act as a highly efficient, high-fidelity single-photon switch. The photon switch is an optical router triggered by a classical signal—the propagation direction of single input photons in the waveguide is controlled by changing the emitter-cavity coupling parameters , for example, using applied fields. The switch reflects photons in the weak emitter-cavity coupling regime and transmits photons in the strong coupling regime. By calculating transmission and reflection spectra using the input-output formalism of quantum optics and the transfer matrix approach, we obtain the fidelity and efficiency of the switch with a single-photon input in both regimes. We find that a single waveguide-coupled cavity can route input photon wave packets with near-unity efficiency and fidelity if the wave packet width is smaller than the cavity mode linewidth. We also find that using multiple waveguide-coupled cavities increases the switching bandwidth, allowing wider wave packets to be routed with high efficiency and fidelity. For example, an array of three waveguide-coupled cavities can reflect an input Gaussian wave packet with a full width at half-maximum of 1 nm (corresponding to a few-picosecond pulse) with an efficiency <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><a:mrow><a:msub><a:mi>E</a:mi><a:mi>r</a:mi></a:msub><a:mo>=</a:mo><a:mn>96.4</a:mn><a:mo>%</a:mo></a:mrow></a:math> and a fidelity <b:math xmlns:b="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><b:mrow><b:msub><b:mi>F</b:mi><b:mi>r</b:mi></b:msub><b:mo>=</b:mo><b:mn>97.7</b:mn><b:mo>%</b:mo></b:mrow></b:math>, or transmit the wave packet with an efficiency <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><c:mrow><c:msub><c:mi>E</c:mi><c:mi>t</c:mi></c:msub><c:mo>=</c:mo><c:mn>99.7</c:mn><c:mo>%</c:mo></c:mrow></c:math> and a fidelity <d:math xmlns:d="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><d:mrow><d:msub><d:mi>F</d:mi><d:mi>t</d:mi></d:msub><d:mo>=</d:mo><d:mn>99.8</d:mn><d:mo>%</d:mo></d:mrow></d:math>. Such efficient, high-fidelity single-photon routing is essential for scalable photonic quantum technologies. Published by the American Physical Society 2024 

Efficient, high-fidelity single-photon switch based on waveguide-coupled cavities

Nowadays, the quantum switch is playing a key device in optical quantum networks. In this paper, we investigate the transport of a single photon in one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguides with two quantum emitters, which the first quantum emitter fixed at x = 0 and the other can be placed at any position. The numerical results show that the transport properties of the single-photon are particularly sensitive to the position of the second quantum emitter. The coupling strength of gn can broaden the width of the transmission spectra, the larger the coupling strength gn is, the wider transmission spectra is. Not only that, single-photon in the controllable channel can be perfectly reflected or transmitted by the quantum emitter. We also found that if both two quantum emitters are embedded at x = 0, the dipole-dipole interactions of two quantum emitters can change the dip positions in the spectra.
