Digital economy plays an irreplaceable role in achieving energy development, and may also have a profound impact on energy supply and consumption. Based on a panel dataset of 30 provinces in China for the period 2006 to 2019, we assess the impact of digital economy on energy trilemma. This study also detects the asymmetric nexus between digital economy and energy trilemma, and investigates the direct and indirect effects of digital economy on energy trilemma. The main findings are as follows. (1) Digital economy shows a significant inhibitory effect on energy trilemma, which means energy trilemma can be effectively eradicated by promoting the development of digital economy. (2) Digital economy has a more prominent inhibitory effect on energy trilemma when the latter is at lower quantiles, and the marginal impact of digital economy on the energy trilemma decreases as the level of energy trilemma increases. (3) Digital economy exerts a significant and negative impact on energy insecurity, inequity, and unsustainability, which are three pillars of the energy trilemma. (4) Digital economy contributes to the eradication of energy trilemma by inhibiting traditional energy consumption and simultaneously encouraging technology innovation, which are two mediators in the nexus between digital economy and energy trilemma. Following the above findings, this study presents a series of policy recommendations for accelerating the development of digital economy and restricting energy trilemma. 

Is digital economy an answer to energy trilemma eradication? The case of China.

Anthropogenic environmental pollution has become a global concern due to its profound impact on Earth's ecosystems. This study examines the interrelation between energy resources (both renewable and non-renewable), economic growth, and CO2 emissions across G-20 countries, using historical data from 1990 to 2020. The study employs a robustness analysis to confirm the stability and consistency of the data acquired from the primary approaches. The study utilizes FMOLS (Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares) and DOLS (Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares) methodologies to investigate endogeneity issues and examine the dynamic linkages in long-term and short-term contexts. The analysis is bifurcated based on two distinct dependent variables: CO2 emissions from gas and oil. Results indicate that gas and oil energies directly augment CO2 emissions. While hydro and renewable energies typically diminish CO2 emissions, specific quantiles suggest a slight increase, indicating an indirect contribution. GDP's quantile transition from positive to negative implies that economic growth can curtail CO2 emissions, suggesting a shift in developed economies from non-renewable to renewable energy dependencies. This study offers insightful policy implications, emphasizing the need to transition from harmful conventional energy sources to renewables to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. 

Strategic assessment of energy resources, economic growth, and CO2 emissions in G-20 countries for a sustainable future

Topological network and fuzzy AHP modeling framework for the suitability analysis of evacuation shelters: A case study in Japan

Interdisciplinary energy research that focuses on the upcoming energy transition is growing at pace and scale given the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. As a consequence, integrated interventions are needed to support the energy transition. However, gaps in the energy literature remain on how to manage uncertainties inherent in energy transition. Based on a review that showcases some of the shortcomings in the current literature, this paper introduces a novel framework to provide a structure on how to engage with uncertainty called targeted and tangential effects. Relevant case studies in residential energy and energy justice as well as household retrofits and health are used to demonstrate how the targeted and tangential framework can be used. The targeted and tangential effect concept provides an innovative framework for energy researchers and practitioners to use to proactively recognize and identify uncertainty in the energy transition. Benefits and shortcomings of this framework are presented. Areas of future research are identified, including relevance for policy. 

Targeted and Tangential Effects—A Novel Framework for Energy Research and Practitioners

The balance scales of the energy trilemma (ET), e.g., energy equity (EE), energy security (ES), and environmental sustainability (EVS), are changing, which require adopting a time-varying regime-switching path-forward. Accordingly, this research first studies how the trade-offs between the ET corners are formed through different regimes in the World’s twenty-five large energy consumers from 2004 to 2021. Then, the time-varying transition of the switching states in response to each (i) Hydrogen economy (HE) and (ii) geopolitical risks (GPRI) is investigated. To that end, a time-varying Markov-switching panel vector autoregressive method with regime-heteroskedasticity (MSPVARH) is applied. Finally, this research aims to assess the performance of each ET pillars in response to a change in the major policy instruments, using the generalized methods of movements (GMM) model. The MSPVARH estimation supports that vulnerability of the EE and EVS (ES) is considerably increased (decreased) in response to a change in the innovations when the regime switches from regime 1 as the typical state with the trade-offs; “upward”, “downward”, and “upward” states for the EE, ES, and EVS respectively, to the regime 2. Further, the development of HE increases the p-value of remaining in the dominant regime, while the escalation of GPRI declines the p-value of being trapped in the regime 2. Last but not least, the existence of a causal and long-term relationship between the ET dimensions and the suggested policy instruments is assessed, using the GMM model. This vital structure is essential for the energy transition to a successful net-zero future.
