Pomegranate tree is one of the oldest fruit trees known to humans (4000 and 3000 BCE). Pomegranate blooms as a symbol of life, permanence, wellbeing, femaleness, fertility, knowledge, immortality, and holiness. In efforts to figure out the best source of phenolic compounds in human diet, pomegranate receives a great amount of popularity owing to the biological effects that exerts through free radical scavenging capabilities by its phenolic compounds. Pomegranate has risen to fame for its medical applications since ancient times. Antioxidant, immunity-boosting, and anti-carcinogenic properties are the major virtues of the pomegranate as a fruit that can be applied as an herbal cure. Unique antimicrobial, antihelminthic, and antioxidant effects seen in pomegranate extracts encourage scientists to employ them as cancer preventative agents. Present review is aimed to study the different parts of the pomegranate along with their characteristics and components, chemical compositions, antibacterial effects and the mechanisms of its bactericidal behavior, medicinal applications and its anticancer properties. Then, nanotechnology applications of pomegranate including its use in biosynthesizing different nanoparticles (NPs) and developing drug delivery systems like nanoemulsion, nanoparticles, nanoliposomes, phytosomes, nanovesicles and niosomes will be discussed in detail.

Pomegranate as a promising opportunity in medicine and nanotechnology

Cancer has become one of the most fatal diseases in most countries. In spite of the medical care developing, cancer still remains a significant problem. The majority of the cancers are resistant to treatment. Thus, the research for novel, more efficient and less side effect treatment methods continues. Pomegranate contains strong antioxidant activity, with potential health interests. Research concern in pomegranate is increasing because of their anticancer potential due to possess rich in polyphenols. We highlight the pomegranate potential health benefits and mechanism of cancer progression inhibition. Pomegranate has indicated antiproliferative, anti-metastatic and anti-invasive effects on different cancer cell line in vitro, in vivo and clinical trial. The aim of this review is to evaluate functional properties and the medical benifits of pomegranate against various cancer diseases. In addition, pomegranate properties in in vitro and in vivo experimental human and animal clinical trials and its future use are explored. The available data suggest that Punica granatum (pomegranate) might be used in the control and potential therapeutic for some disease conditions and benefits human health status. This review summarizes in vitro, in vivo and clinical trial studies highlighting the pomegranate role in prevent and treatment of breast, prostate, lung, colon, skin and hepatocellular cell cancers.

Punica granatum (Pomegranate) activity in health promotion and cancer prevention.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.), a species of Punicaceae, has recently become of great interest to the scientists who engage themselves in pharmaceutical, nutriological and pharmacological research, and new drug development, due to its distinctive multiple officinal parts and multiple bioactivities such as hypolipidemic, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-neoplastic, antibacterial, anti-diabetic, antidiarrheal, and helminthic effects. In the present review, we reported the research on pomegranate as to chemical constituents, bioactivities and pharmacokinetics in combination with the recent publications. The constituents of this plant were thoroughly reviewed, and the biosynthetic pathways of major compounds were discussed based on our research results and those reported in the literatures. The bioactivities categorized by vascular protection, digestive protection, anti-pathogenic microbes, anticancer, anti-diabetes, immunomodulation, and others were summarized based on our experimental and the reported data. This article also included the review of pharmacokinetic experiments conducted in our laboratory and toxic investigation reported up to date which may be in favor of the research and development of new drugs.

The invention discloses novel use for brasilein, which relates to the novel use of the brasilein with brazilwood as raw material in the medical aspect, in particular to an application of the brasilein in the preparation of medicines used to treat cerebral ischemia or cerebral hemorrhage, brain tissue peroxide increase and brain function damage diseases caused by the brain tissue peroxide increase. As shown in experimental research, the brasilein has the effects on resisting oxidation, protecting brain neurons, enhancing cerebral blood flow, and suppressing the activity of erythrocyte membrane Na-K-ATP enzyme. The brasilein has an apparent effect on brain issue damage caused by cerebral ischemia reperfusion. When the diseases are treated, the brasilein, taken as an active ingredient, is independently used or matched with other medicines to prepare various medicines with different preparation formulations, and the medicines can be clinically used.
