Untreated dental caries negatively impacts a child's quality of life including overall health and wellbeing, growth and development, social interaction ability, and school attendance. School-based toothbrushing programs have been recognised as an effective intervention to reduce the burden of dental caries. However, limited information is available to understand the real-world enablers and challenges in the implementation and sustainability of toothbrushing programs. This review aims to understand the barriers and enablers in the implementation and sustainability of toothbrushing programs in early childhood settings and primary schools.Five electronic databases [i.e., CINAHL (EBSCO), Medline (EBSCO), EMBASE (Ovid), Web of Science, and PsycINFO] and backward citation chasing were performed. The last updated databases searches were conducted in May 2022. Studies reporting on barriers and enablers in the implementation and sustainability of toothbrushing programs in early childhood settings or primary schools were included in the review. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed by using Joanna Briggs Institute [JBI] and mixed methods appraisal tool [MMAT] critical appraisal tools and results were reported in accordance with PRISMA guidelines.A total of six studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Toothbrushing programs in early childhood settings and primary schools were mostly implemented under the supervision of staff and teachers. A positive attitude of the staff, the flexibility of toothbrushing sessions, involvement of community volunteers and parents were a few of the identified enablers. However, the timing of the communication of the program, inadequate transfer of information among staff, frequent staffing turnover, lack of parental support, and staff feeling overburdened while acting as pseudo parents were frequently reported as barriers.The results of this systematic review identify key enablers and barriers for toothbrushing programs in early childhood settings and primary schools which need to be considered for developing oral health promotion initiatives.

 With the rapid development of materials science and tissue engineering, a variety of biomaterials have been used to construct tissue engineering scaffolds. Due to the performance limitations of single materials, functional composite biomaterials have attracted great attention as tools to improve the effectiveness of biological scaffolds for tissue repair. In recent years, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great promise for application in tissue engineering because of their high specific surface area, high porosity, high biocompatibility, appropriate environmental sensitivities and other advantages. This review introduces methods for the construction of MOFs-based functional composite scaffolds and describes the specific functions and mechanisms of MOFs in repairing damaged tissue. The latest MOFs-based functional composites and their applications in different tissues are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of using MOFs-based composites in tissue engineering are summarized. The aim of this review is to show the great potential of MOFs-based functional composite materials in the field of tissue engineering and to stimulate further innovation in this promising area.

Application of metal organic frameworks-based functional composite scaffolds in tissue engineering

BACKGROUND
Aboriginal older adults residing in remote areas have poor oral function due to inadequate access to healthcare services. Lay health advisor (LHA) strategies can fill capacity shortages of healthcare professionals in rural communities and increase population acceptance of health care or healthy behaviours.


OBJECTIVE(S)
To evaluate the effectiveness the LHA program on oral function and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among older adults in aboriginal community.


METHODS
Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG; n = 122) and a control group (CG; n = 118). All participants performed oral exercises, and the EG received additional one-on-one 30-min lessons by an LHA over 4 weeks. Data were collected through face-to-face interview and oral examination. The generalized estimating equation model was used to analyse changes in outcomes over time.


RESULTS
The EG exhibited significantly greater improvement in swallowing (β = .63) at the 6-month follow-up and in masticatory performance (β = .52) and pronunciation of the syllable/pa/ (β = 2.65) at the 2-week follow-up than the CG did. The EG had a significantly lower plaque control record (β = -.14) and plaque index (β = -.30) at the 3-month follow-up than the CG did. Moreover, the OHRQoL was significantly increased at 6-months follow-up in the EG (p = .010).


CONCLUSION
The LHA program had positive effects on chewing, swallowing and plaque control in aboriginal older adults. LHA group also experienced positive long-term effect on OHRQoL after intervention.

Effectiveness of the lay health advisor program on oral function and quality of life in aboriginal older adults: A randomized controlled trial.

Inadequate competency of patient education in healthcare providers triggered this review to summarize common approaches and recent advancements. Methods: This narrative review summarizes common approaches and recent advancements in patient education with their relations to health literacy, their strengths, limitations, and practical issues. Results: This review highlighted the multifaceted approaches to patient education, emphasizing the importance of tailoring methods to meet the diverse needs of patients. By integrating various strategies, including intrapersonal, interpersonal, and societal/community-level interventions, healthcare providers can create a more comprehensive educational experience that addresses the complexities of patient needs, meanwhile improving the health literacy of patients. With the rise of digital media and artificial intelligence, there is an increasing need for innovative educational resources that can effectively reach and engage patients. Ongoing research and collaboration among healthcare professionals and policymakers will be essential to refine educational strategies and adapt to emerging challenges. It is essential to remain vigilant about potential conflicts of interest that may compromise the integrity of educational content. Conclusion: Effective patient education empowers individuals and their contributions to a healthier society by fostering informed decision-making and encouraging proactive health management. 

Approaches to Reach Trustworthy Patient Education: A Narrative Review

OBJECTIVES An oral health disparity exists between native and immigrant children in Taiwan. This study evaluated the long-term effectiveness of a lay health advisor (LHA) intervention on immigrant children's dental caries and maternal preventive behaviours. METHODS Fifty-one immigrant mother-child pairs were randomly assigned to LHA intervention (n = 23) and control (n = 28) groups. Mothers in the LHA group received a four-chapter one-on-one lesson plan, which included dental caries-related knowledge, brushing techniques, caries prevention and free preventive services, from the LHA over 4 weeks. Mothers in the control group received only a health brochure. Baseline and 1-week, 2-month, and 8-month follow-up information was collected using dental examinations and questionnaires. RESULTS The mean ages of the children in the LHA and control groups were 4.0 ± 1.4 and 4.2 ± 1.5, respectively. The decayed, missing due to caries, filled teeth (dmft) index in the LHA and control groups was 4.8 ± 6.0 and 5.4 ± 5.4, respectively, at baseline. At the 8-month postintervention follow-up, the number of filled teeth (ft) in the LHA group was higher than that in the control group (β = 8.3, P = .033). The effect size (ES) demonstrated an upward trend at 1-week, 2-month and 8-month follow-ups in ft (ES = 0.21, 0.50 and 0.59, respectively) and a decrease in the number of decayed teeth (dt) (ES = 0.30, 0.43 and 0.57, respectively). The mothers in the LHA group were observed to be 10.9 times more likely than control mothers to assist their children in toothbrushing for 3 min at the 1-week follow-up (95% CI = 1.98-59.40, P = .006). CONCLUSIONS The LHA intervention strategy had positive effects on the immigrant children's new dt and ft and on maternal preventive behaviour, such as assisting their children in toothbrushing.

Long-term effects of a lay health advisor intervention on immigrant children's dental caries and maternal preventive behaviour: A randomized controlled trial.

In this study, a β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs)/Ni-based MOF (β-CDs/Ni-based MOF) fibrous network with focus on biocompatible and biodegradable properties was used as a new material for orthopedic applications. The final products were synthesized by an efficient, rapid, and controllable electrospinning route under optimal conditions, including a flow rate of 0.3 mL g−1, applied voltage of 18 kV, and spinning distance of 20 cm. Efficient characterization by various analyzes showed that the β-CDs/Ni-based MOF fibrous nanostructures had a thermal stability at about 320 °C and homogeneous particles with a narrow size distribution. The BET analysis results showed a specific surface area of 2140 m2 g−1 for these compounds, which facilized potential conditions needed for the application of these compounds as a new substrate to improve the healing of bone fractures. The results showed the better porosity of the β-CDs/Ni-based MOF scaffolds as an essential property, leading to higher proliferation and nutrition and oxygen delivery, resulting in more tissue regeneration. This study proposes a novel strategy for a fibrous network substrate with distinct properties for orthopedic purposes.
