SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses spread via aerosols generated by infected people. Face masks can limit transmission. However, widespread use of disposable masks consumes tremendous resources and generates waste. Here, a novel material for treating blown polypropylene filtration media used in medical-grade masks to impart antimicrobial activity is reported. To produce thin copper@ZIF-8 core-shell nanowires (Cu@ZIF-8 NWs), Cu NWs are stabilized using a pluronic F-127 block copolymer, followed by growth of ZIF-8 to obtain uniform core-shell structures. The Cu@ZIF-8 NWs are applied to filtration media by dip coating. Aerosol filtration efficiency decreases upon exposure to ethanol (solvent for dip-coating), but increases with addition of Cu@ZIF-8 NWs. Cu@ZIF-8 NWs shows enhanced antibacterial activity, compared to Cu NWs or ZIF-8 alone, against Streptococcus mutans and Escherichia coli. Antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 is assayed using virus-infected Vero E6 cells, demonstrating 55% inhibition of virus replication after 48 h by 1 µg of Cu@ZIF-8 NWs per well. Cu@ZIF-8 NWs' cytotoxicity is tested against four cell lines, and their effect on inflammatory response in A549 cells is examined, demonstrating good biocompatibility. This low-cost, scalable synthesis and straightforward deposition of Cu@ZIF-8 NWs onto filter media has great potential to reduce disease transmission, resource consumption, and environmental impact of waste.

Metal Organic Frameworks for Antibacterial Applications

The outbreak of COVID-19 revealed the vulnerability of commercially available face masks. Without having antibacterial/antiviral activities, the current masks act only as filtering materials of the aerosols containing microorganisms. Meanwhile, in surgical masks, the viral and bacterial filtration highly depends on the electrostatic charges of masks. These electrostatic charges disappear after 8 h, which leads to a significant decline in filtration efficiency. Therefore, to enhance the masks' protection performance, fabrication of innovative masks with more advanced functions is in urgent demand. This review summarizes the various functionalizing agents which can endow four important functions in the masks including i) boosting the antimicrobial and self-disinfectant characteristics via incorporating metal nanoparticles or photosensitizers, ii) increasing the self-cleaning by inserting superhydrophobic materials such as graphenes and alkyl silanes, iii) creating photo/electrothermal properties by forming graphene and metal thin films within the masks, and iv) incorporating triboelectric nanogenerators among the friction layers of masks to stabilize the electrostatic charges and facilitating the recharging of masks. The strategies for creating these properties toward the functionalized masks are discussed in detail. The effectiveness and limitation of each method in generating the desired properties are well-explained along with addressing the prospects for the future development of masks.

Antiviral/antibacterial biodegradable cellulose nonwovens as environmentally friendly and bioprotective materials with potential to minimize microplastic pollution

Bacterial infections remain the leading cause of death worldwide today. The emergence of antibiotic resistance has urged the development of alternative antibacterial technologies to complement or replace traditional antibiotic treatments. In this regard, metal nanomaterials have attracted great attention for their controllable antibacterial functions that are less prone to resistance. This review discusses a particular family of stimuli-activable metal-bearing nanomaterials (denoted as SAMNs) and the associated on-demand antibacterial strategies. The various SAMN-enabled antibacterial strategies stem from basic light and magnet activation, with the addition of bacterial microenvironment responsiveness and/or bacteria-targeting selectivity and therefore offer higher spatiotemporal controllability. The discussion focuses on nanomaterial design principles, antibacterial mechanisms, and antibacterial performance, as well as emerging applications that desire on-demand and selective activation (i.e., medical antibacterial treatments, surface anti-biofilm, water disinfection, and wearable antibacterial materials). The review concludes with the authors' perspectives on the challenges and future directions for developing industrial translatable next-generation antibacterial strategies.

Stimuli-Activable Metal-Bearing Nanomaterials and Precise On-Demand Antibacterial Strategies.

Montmorillonite (MMT), a layered aluminosilicate, has a mucosal nutrient effect and restores the gut barriers integrity. However, orally administrating MMT is not effective to combat the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and alleviate the acute inflammatory relapse for colitis patients. Herein, polydopamine-doped montmorillonite micro-sheets (PDA/MMT) have been developed as a therapeutic platform for colitis treatment. SEM and EDS analysis showed that dopamine monomer (DA) was easily polymerized in alkaline condition and polydopamine (PDA) was uniformly cladded on the surface of MMT micro-sheets. The depositing amount of PDA was reaching to 2.06 ​± ​0.08%. Moreover, in vitro fluorescence probes experiments showed that PDA/MMT presented the broad spectra of scavenging various ROS sources including •OH, •O2−, and H2O2. Meanwhile, the intracellular ROS of Rosup/H2O2 treated Caco-2 ​cell was also effectively scavenged by PDA/MMT, which resulted in the obvious improvement of the cell viability under oxidative stress. Moreover, most of orally administrated PDA/MMT was transited to the gut and form a protective film on the diseased colon. PDA/MMT exhibited the obvious therapeutic effect on DSS-induced ulcerative colitis mouse. Importantly, the gut mucosa of colitis mouse was well restored after PDA/MMT treatment. Moreover, the colonic inflammation was significantly alleviated and the goblet cells were obliviously recovered. The therapeutic mechanism of PDA/MMT was highly associated with inhibiting oxidative stress. Collectively, PDA/MMT micro-sheets as a therapeutic platform may provide a promising therapeutic strategy for UC treatment.
