Femtocells, despite their name, pose a potentially large disruption to the carefully planned cellular networks that now connect a majority of the planet's citizens to the Internet and with each other. Femtocells - which by the end of 2010 already outnumbered traditional base stations and at the time of publication are being deployed at a rate of about five million a year - both enhance and interfere with this network in ways that are not yet well understood. Will femtocells be crucial for offloading data and video from the creaking traditional network? Or will femtocells prove more trouble than they are worth, undermining decades of careful base station deployment with unpredictable interference while delivering only limited gains? Or possibly neither: are femtocells just a "flash in the pan"; an exciting but short-lived stage of network evolution that will be rendered obsolete by improved WiFi offloading, new backhaul regulations and/or pricing, or other unforeseen technological developments? This tutorial article overviews the history of femtocells, demystifies their key aspects, and provides a preview of the next few years, which the authors believe will see a rapid acceleration towards small cell technology. In the course of the article, we also position and introduce the articles that headline this special issue.

Nonlinear Fractional Programming

The demand for wireless connectivity has grown exponentially over the last few decades. Fifth-generation (5G) communications, with far more features than fourth-generation communications, will soon be deployed worldwide. A new paradigm of wireless communication, the sixth-generation (6G) system, with the full support of artificial intelligence, is expected to be implemented between 2027 and 2030. Beyond 5G, some fundamental issues that need to be addressed are higher system capacity, higher data rate, lower latency, higher security, and improved quality of service (QoS) compared to the 5G system. This paper presents the vision of future 6G wireless communication and its network architecture. This article describes emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, terahertz communications, wireless optical technology, free-space optical network, blockchain, three-dimensional networking, quantum communications, unmanned aerial vehicles, cell-free communications, integration of wireless information and energy transfer, integrated sensing and communication, integrated access-backhaul networks, dynamic network slicing, holographic beamforming, backscatter communication, intelligent reflecting surface, proactive caching, and big data analytics that can assist the 6G architecture development in guaranteeing the QoS. Besides, expected applications with 6G communication requirements and possible technologies are presented. We also describe potential challenges and research directions for achieving this goal.

6G Wireless Communication Systems: Applications, Requirements, Technologies, Challenges, and Research Directions

Mobile communications have been undergoing a generational change every ten years or so. However, the time difference between the so-called “G’s” is also decreasing. While fifth-generation (5G) systems are becoming a commercial reality, there is already significant interest in systems beyond 5G, which we refer to as the sixth generation (6G) of wireless systems. In contrast to the already published papers on the topic, we take a top-down approach to 6G. More precisely, we present a holistic discussion of 6G systems beginning with lifestyle and societal changes driving the need for next-generation networks. This is followed by a discussion into the technical requirements needed to enable 6G applications, based on which we dissect key challenges and possibilities for practically realizable system solutions across all layers of the Open Systems Interconnection stack (i.e., from applications to the physical layer). Since many of the 6G applications will need access to an order-of-magnitude more spectrum, utilization of frequencies between 100 GHz and 1 THz becomes of paramount importance. As such, the 6G ecosystem will feature a diverse range of frequency bands, ranging from below 6 GHz up to 1 THz. We comprehensively characterize the limitations that must be overcome to realize working systems in these bands and provide a unique perspective on the physical and higher layer challenges relating to the design of next-generation core networks, new modulation and coding methods, novel multiple-access techniques, antenna arrays, wave propagation, radio frequency transceiver design, and real-time signal processing. We rigorously discuss the fundamental changes required in the core networks of the future, such as the redesign or significant reduction of the transport architecture that serves as a major source of latency for time-sensitive applications. This is in sharp contrast to the present hierarchical network architectures that are not suitable to realize many of the anticipated 6G services. While evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of key candidate 6G technologies, we differentiate what may be practically achievable over the next decade, relative to what is possible in theory. Keeping this in mind, we present concrete research challenges for each of the discussed system aspects, providing inspiration for what follows.

6G Wireless Systems: Vision, Requirements, Challenges, Insights, and Opportunities

Providing ubiquitous connectivity to diverse device types is the key challenge for 5G and beyond 5G (B5G). Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to be an important component of the upcoming wireless networks that can potentially facilitate wireless broadcast and support high rate transmissions. Compared to the communications with fixed infrastructure, UAV has salient attributes, such as flexible deployment, strong line-of-sight (LoS) connection links, and additional design degrees of freedom with the controlled mobility. In this paper, a comprehensive survey on UAV communication towards 5G/B5G wireless networks is presented. We first briefly introduce essential background and the space-air-ground integrated networks, as well as discuss related research challenges faced by the emerging integrated network architecture. We then provide an exhaustive review of various 5G techniques based on UAV platforms, which we categorize by different domains including physical layer, network layer, and joint communication, computing and caching. In addition, a great number of open research problems are outlined and identified as possible future research directions.

UAV Communications for 5G and Beyond: Recent Advances and Future Trends

The Internet of Things (IoT), satellite communication, and other communication systems that utilize radio frequency waveforms frequently use modern wireless communication technologies. Wireless communication provides benefits over conventional communication due to its simple installation. One of the most well-known of them is Optical Camera Communication (OCC) technology, which has several advantages, including no negative effects on human health, good security, and inexpensive operating expenses. In this paper, we offer a multiple-input multiple-output modulation method that uses deep learning (DL) to recognize light-emitting diodes and predict thresholds while considering mobility assistance and long-distance communication into considerations. Our suggested strategy employs DL algorithms to enhance the performance of the traditional camera on-off keying (C-OOK) scheme by reducing bit error rate, communication distance., and data rate.

Development of MIMO Scheme-based Optical Camera Communication System using Deep Learning method

An anti-collision protocol which tries to minimize the collision probability and identification time is the most important factor in all identification technologies. This paper focuses on methods to improve the efficiency of tag's process in identification systems. Our scheme, Binary Slotted Query Tree (BSQT) algorithm, is a memoryless protocol that identifies an object's ID more efficiently by removing the unnecessary prefixes of the traditional Query Tree (QT) algorithm. With enhanced QT algorithm, the reader will broadcast 1 bit and wait the response from the tags but the difference in this scheme is the reader will listen in 2 slots (slot 1 is for 0 bit Tags and slot 2 is for 1 bit Tags). Base on the responses the reader will decide next broadcasted bit. This will help for the reader to remove some unnecessary broadcasted bits which no tags will response. Numerical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme decreases the tag identification time by reducing the overall number of request.

Enhanced Anti-Collision Protocol for Identification Systems

In the area of image processing and computer vision, visual anomaly detection is a critical and difficult task. For anomaly detection in surface image data, a customized neural network incorporating self-gated rectified linear unit (SGReLU) was designed, and the SGReLU-based model excelled other activation function-based models with a top-20 average test accuracy of 99.84%. The computational time needed for the operation is 10533 s for 20 epochs and the top-20 average test loss is 0.0125 using SGReLU, both of them were comparatively less than other activation functions.

While mobile IPTV services are supported through the mobile WiMAX networks, there must need some guaranteed bandwidth for the IPTV services especially if IPTV and non-IPTV services are simultaneously supported by the mobile WiMAX networks. The quality of an IPTV service definitely depends on the allocated bandwidth for that channel. However, due to the high quality IPTV services and to support of huge non-IPTV traffic over mobile WiMAX networks, it is not possible to guarantee the sufficient amount of the limited mobile WiMAX bandwidth for the mobile IPTV services every time. A Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the mobile IPTV service provider and mobile WiMAX network operator to reserve sufficient bandwidth for the IPTV calls can increase the satisfaction level of the mobile IPTV users. In this paper, we propose a SLA negotiation procedure for mobile IPTV users over mobile WiMAX networks. The Bandwidth Broker controls the allocated bandwidth for IPTV and non-IPTV users. The proposed dynamically reserved bandwidth for the IPTV services increases the IPTV user's satisfaction level. The simulation results state that, our proposed scheme is able to provide better user satisfaction level for the IPTV users.
